Mike Zagurski promoted to Reading

In case you haven’t checked the box scores yet, Zagurski made his AA debut today, pitching 2 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 2. Mike appears to be on the fast track at this point, and with a solid 3 months under his belt, could even get a look in September when the rosters expand.

  1. A BIG whoopee for Zagurski…and the Phils’ front office. Lots of people here have been calling for his elevation….Maybe they heard our calls…!! Ha.

Now–an aside–what’s up with Milner?? He’s a 220 plus pound CFer…!!?? Unusual to say the least.Sneaking up on us… very good hitting of late. Too old to be a real prospect..?? Maybe he needs elevation, too…to Clwter FSL…?? Like to see that.

  2. Milner is “old” for the SAL, but it’s not uncommon for a college player to spend half a season in Low A after being drafted. If he isn’t promoted by July, it must mean the Phillies don’t view his solid start as “real” in the sense that he can sustain it. He’s a big kid, but supposedly played a good defensive CF in college, so I’m sure the hope is to keep him in RF as long as they can, and he should be ok there. Some reasons to be hopeful…

    10.1% Walk Rate
    21.7% K rate
    37.8 XBH%

The walk rate and XBH rate are both good, the K rate is passable. What’s kind of strange to me is that he’s hitting better at home than on the road, because Lakewood’s home park is a pitcher’s paradise.

  3. I’m very stoked for Zags, but would selfishly like to see him put in some more time in Clearwater before being moved up. The kid can pitch, but I think he could use a few more innings of dominance before he moves up to tougher hitters. There is no reason to kill his confidence, especially if the Phils see him as a setup man or closer. I hear he did pretty good in his first appearance in Reading… let’s cross our finger that it continues… Good Luck Zags.
