Recap: The BlueClaws have hit the ground running in the second half, racing out to an 8-2 record which leaves them atop the SAL North. Overall, they are 50-30, the best record in the SAL by 4 1/2 games. In personnel notes, Matt Way goes up, Trevor May comes down, and Nick Hernandez looks to be two to three weeks away from returning (turns out he had a frayed labrum). I’ve seen two recent reports on Jarred Cosart–the Asbury Park Press reports he’s shut down for two-to-three weeks, then will begin a throwing program, while csnphilly reports he is getting an MRI on his elbow.
Hitters: The ‘Claws have gotten production from up and down the lineup through the first ten games of the second half. Sebastian Valle has continued raking, Jiwan James’ rebound during June and July has been fun to follow, and Jonathan Singleton is still knocking in runs (even with a bit of a swoon in batting average).

Pitchers: The pitching has been rock-solid (at least among the guys I track here). Seems like the list of “prospects” is getting longer and longer. Assuming Cosart gets back, it’s tough to imagine any rotation in the minors with three high ceiling arms to match Cosart-Colvin-May. In addition, the ‘Claws relief corps has been performing too well to be ignored, so even though some of them are a bit old for the SAL, their numbers are still noteworthy.

SAL All-Star Notes: The ‘Claws had four players named to the game, although injuries prevented Nick Hernandez and Jeremy Barnes from playing. The two ‘Claws who did play gave a good accounting for themselves: Josh Zeid pitched 1 1/3 hitless, scoreless innings while striking out two, and Jonathan Villar went 2-5 including an opposite field solo homer.
It will be nice to see Nick Hernandez come back in a few weeks…he was doing a great job before going down.
So, Buschini has been consigned to the sea of forgetfulness.
Schoey is forcing himself into an every day role hitting .423 with a 1.132 OPS over his last 10 games.
Was buschini the kid who was a good hitting second basemen???

Buschini has played himself into the sea of forgetfulness. He has not been awful, but has not shown any of the above avg performance of a prominent prospect. Barnes has surpassed him, although Barnes has cooled a bit lately.
Well, it’s not that I’ve forgotten him, but I’ve been going back and forth for awhile now as to whether to continue to track him. Seems like for a college guy in Low-A, he’s played himself more into a filler role than a prospect role. 23-year old 3B with 2 homers who hit .216 in May and .209 in June.

From csnphilly.com: “It’s what happens just before it tears,” Hernandez said. “They caught it just in time. I rested for three weeks without throwing and now I’ve gotten back into it. My shoulder was weak around the labrum, but I’ve really strengthened it doing band exercises to prevent it from happening again.”

Of the 12 players who have been featured in Helium Watch this year, the one with the best chance to appear in next year’s Top 100 is Phillies first baseman Jonathan Singleton, who’s hitting .345/.431/.608 as an 18-year-old in low Class A. A so-so high school senior season dropped Singleton to the eighth round of the 2009 draft, and he looks like a steal. That said, first basemen usually don’t make the Top 100 on the basis of a strong year in low Class A.
I heard that Gump may have broken his arm. Just wondering if that rumor is true , or speculation.
Asbury Park Press reported Gump fractured his arm after getting hit by a pitch on Sunday.
I’ll pre-empt any Debbie Downers by saying that we all know these ranking don’t actually mean squat, but who cares? They are fun, especially when they are kind to our guys.

2. Dom Brown – It was a tough choice between Brown and Trout for the top spot, so if it makes you feel better, let’s call him No. 1A. Brown has really done it all this year, and that power is now coming along just as scouts long predicted it would.
12. Jarred Cosart – If his teammate, Jonathan Singleton, was the league’s most impressive hitter in the Gulf Coast League in 2009, then Cosart was probably the league’s top arm. He has a fastball that is comfortably in the mid-90s and for the most part he has just walked through low Single-A ball hitters in 2010. He’s still a bit crude, but continues to improve rapidly.
20. Jon Singleton – No, I’m not jumping the gun with this one. Singleton has been high on my radar since he debuted in the GCL last year. Since then, he has only gotten better. His huge offensive production is not a mirage, and he has special potential at the plate.

Trout over Dom Brown? Brown has ripped AA and tearing up AAA. Trout is still in A+. What is that guy smoking?

Guru, Trout is actually in low A (unless he was promoted today). I don’t think higher level though necessarily leads to a higher prospect rating. If you trust your evaluation, go ahead and rate those lower guys. Heck, scouts who can accurately rate the low A players are EXTREMELY valuable. Anyone can tell that Brown can play.
I’d go with Brown myself. But it’s hard not to like a CF who is hitting .360 over his career with power and speed. Imagine a prospect who represents an amalgoration of Anthony Gose and Jon Singleton. That’s Trout.
I think the Brown Trout competition favors Brown. As the guru pointed out, brown is tearing up much better competition and seems to be five tool. what could trout possibly be doing to be #1. is there a new sixth tool i do not know about?
Alan … nowhere is it written that Trout has the power you are mentioning. He’s slugged .486 and .533 in his first two years. Singleton is slugging .613. The projections I’ve seen for Trout is that he could grow into a 20-25 HR guy, and that’s the current BEST case scenario. He’s a very impressive player, but he’s not a pure power hitter as Singleton projects to be.
Everybody knows that AA is the biggest obstacle for any minor league prospect. You rip AA, your chances increase a lot that you can be a superstar. To rank Trout (who’s not close to AA) over Brown (who has already ripped AA) is crazy I think. Trout is good, but there seems to be some mad hype on this guy. And if Trout is getting that hype, then Singleton should be higher than 20.

Schoey executes perfectly the rare suicide squeeze. First one of the year for Lakewood. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was the first for the organization in quite a while.
Barnes not in lineup for Lakewood and Garcia not in lineup for Clearwater today. I smell a transaction. Both should move up.
Also, with non-prospect Brian Gump, getting hurt, maybe Miguel Alvarez can get some ABs at Lakewood.
Parent was so mad a Villar tonight he had Barnes warming up in the pen to come into the game in the bottom of the fourth. But thought better of it since Barnes was his only non catcher on his bench after Gump broke his arm on a thrown pitch on Sun. Villar has committed three errors, struck out twice, let a pop fly drop in for a single and was thrown out easily trying to steal all in the first four innings. Still because of the Alan Schoenberger’s four RBI’s and turning a key DP Lakewood is up in the game.
