Holy moly, what a ball game. Before the largest playoff crowd in BlueClaws history, Lakewood and Hickory swapped runs in the top of the first, then shut each other out through the next 8 innings. Finally, Hickory poked through with a run in the 10th. Despite getting two runners on in the bottom of the 10th, the BlueClaws could not score, and we’re back for Game 3 on the shoulders of Jonathan Pettibone tomorrow night at 7:05. Lakewood Takes 1-0 Lead
Trevor May was completely dominant in Game One of the BlueClaws series against Hickory as Lakewood took Game One 7-0. May went 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just four hits and a walk, while striking out 13. Lakewood got onto the board in the third inning when Jeremy Barnes scored on a wild pitch, which was followed by a Jiwan James sac fly which made the score 2-0. A Sebastian Valle solo blast extended the lead to 3-0 in the 4th, while two more homers, a three run shot by Alan Schoenberger and a solo homer by Jonathan Singleton led to a four spot on the board in the 5th. Eric Pettis, called up from Williamsport and Josh Zeid pitched the final 2.1 finishing off the shutout. Both Jeremy Barnes and Keoni Ruth has multi hit games for the BlueClaws. The best two out of three series continues Friday in Lakewood with Brody Colvin on the hill.
Lehigh Valley End of Season Report
First, before we get into the last Lehigh Valley report of the season, a huge thank you goes to the front office of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs for the access they allow Phuture Phillies. General Manager Kurt Landes, along with Media Relations Director Matt Provence and Media Relations Manager Jon Schaefer continue to provide access to players and information that helps make this site what it is. A special thank you goes to Media Relations Assistant Tim Doohan who dealt with all media with great professionalism and humor in what can be a trying environment. Whenever immediate information was asked for, Tim was there to provide what was needed efficiently, accurately, and with a great attitude.
Scheduling Note: Look for End of the Season reviews on each player in the organization starting with Corner Infielders late this week. Continue reading Lehigh Valley End of Season Report
Lakewood Weekly Report (8/30-9/5)
Recap: Abbreviated weekly recap this week in lieu of a first-hand report from last night’s game and a lengthier season-ending writeup whenever the playoffs end. Lakewood went 5-2 on the week and won the SAL North second-half title. They’ll start the playoffs on Wednesday at Hickory with Trevor May on the mound. Good starts this week from May and Pettibone, another really good start from Julio Rodriguez. A quick glance through the box scores for the week doesn’t show anyone jumping off the page with a great performance, although Leandro Castro went on a bit of an RBI binge at the end of the week and looks like he’ll end up leading the team in that category. The most interesting things to look for in today’s regular season finale are whether Jiwan James can get the two hits he needs to tie Quintin Berry’s Lakewood single-season record and whether the ‘Claws can tie their single-season record for wins. Huppert Not Coming Back to Lehigh Valley
Multiple media outlets are reporting that Dave Huppert, the manager of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs has been told he will not be back to manage Lehigh Valley in 2011 after three sub par seasons. Although minor league managers are not judged solely on their won-loss record, a cumulative record of over 60 games below .500 in his three years at the helm was difficult to look past. Huppert will be managing Lehigh Valley in their final game of the season against Scranton on Monday and then will begin his search for work in another organization.

Lakewood Weekly Report (8/23-8/29)
Recap: Lakewood went 4-2 in the second-to-last week of the regular season. The week left them at 36-25 for the second half, 4.5 games ahead of Greensboro in the SAL North. Their magic number for clinching the second half title is 4 entering Monday night. The remaining schedule is all at home, with 4 against Augusta and 4 against Kannapolis. They are 78-53 overall and assuming they end up clinching the second half title, the ‘Claws would open the playoffs at Hickory on 9/8. A 6-2 finish would allow them to tie the franchise record for wins in a season. As an aside, I will finally get to my first Lakewood game of the year on Sunday, so if there’s anything anyone wants me to look for in particular, please leave it in the comments. ‘Pigs Weekend Update, September Callups
A review of the weekend for the IronPigs with a few notes and September call up predictions.
Friday–Lehigh Valley was in Scranton on Friday evening and lost in a slugfest, 10-7. Scranton struck early with a run in the 2nd off of Drew Carpenter, taking a 1-0 lead. Lehigh Valley answered back with a John Mayberry RBI single in the 4th, tying the game, however the tie lasted just a few minutes as the Yanks put two more on the board in the bottom of the inning, giving them a 3-1 lead. A three run 5th inning, gave Lehigh Valley the lead at 4-3 in the see saw affair, the key hits being doubles by Joe Savery and Paul Hoover. Scranton scored 6 runs in the sixth inning knocking Drew Carpenter (7-11) out of the game, having gone 5.1 Innings, giving up 6 runs on 6 hits. He walked 3 and struck out 3. Carpenter was replaced by Oscar Villarreal who gave up 3 runs without getting an out. Lehigh Valley did get three back in the 7th, but by then the game was out of reach. Joe Savery led the way offensively, going 3-4 with a double, and two runs scored, while Paul Hoover was 2-3 with a double, 2 runs and an RBI. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Update, September Callups
