Severino Gonzalez, who was designated for assignment after FA Michael Saunders was signed, was traded to the Miami Marlins for a PTBNL or cash.  Another aging catcher, Ryan Hanigan, was signed and assigned to Lehigh Valley with an invite to spring training.

Clearwater pitcher Matt Imhof retired. And, three young players were released – Lakewood’s 2B William Cuicas and 1B Brendon Hayden, and the GCL Phillies RHP Luis Gonzalez.

The Phillies signed former Toronto outfielder Michael Saunders to a one-year contract with a club option.  To make room on the 40-man roster, Severino Gonzalez was designated for assignment.  They also signed a 19-year old RHP from Venezuela, Ruben Aponte. On January 11, 2017, The Phillies announced the non-roster invites to spring training from among the organization’s prospects, thus bringing the total number of NRI to 20 players.

Happy New Year to the Phuture Phillies community!  We are now in the same calendar year of the next baseball season.  Pitchers and catchers report in 6 weeks.  The first full workout is only days afterward.  I can hear bat hitting ball.  Just one more milestone for me, Phantasy Week.  I don’t participate.  But I go watch for a baseball fix to hold me over for the final three weeks of the off season.  Here’s the open discussion for Phillies’ talk and other topics. Here’s the open discussion for Phillies’ talk and other topics.

Baseball’s Winter Meetings came and went with just one transaction by the Phillies.  They signed FA reliever, RHP Joaquin Benoit.  As a result, Michael Mariot was designated for assignment.

The meetings ended Friday with the Rule 5 draft.  The Phillies didn’t participate, but saw LHP Hoby Milner selected by the Cleveland Indians during the major league selection process.  During the AAA portion of the draft, the Phillies selected SS Jorge Flores from the Dunedin Blue Jays (FSL) and lost Clearwater’s RHP Jairo Munoz (FSL) to the Tampa Rays. Just before Thanksgiving, the Phillies released David Buchanan and traded Jimmy Cordero to the Nationals for cash considerations or a PTBNL.  They also signed a couple international free agents, RHP Victor Santos and OF Wilbert Garcia.  They assigned LHP Anton Mikhailovich Kuznetsov to the DSL Phillies.  Kuznetsov was signed back on September 8th and is from Moscow.
