Williamsport Game Report, 7/28

Another insightful game report from NYPhilsManiac19:

Offense:

Roman Quinn: I was very interested in seeing Quinn but he did not have a good game. In his first two at-bats, he bunted foul- good to see him trying to utilize his speed. 1st time up, he fouled off three 2 strike pitches before popping up to shallow RC. Second at bat he also fouled off a few pitches before getting hit by the pitch on the knee. He was in obvious pain but stayed in the game. Quinn took off for second and Walding hit a perfect high chopper over the 1B’s head so Quinn went 1st to 3rd. After he got to third he was bent over holding his knee so the trainer came out, but again he stayed in the game. Larry Greene knocked him in with a hard liner to LF that went for a sac fly. In his last two at-bats, I would’ve thought his speed would have helped but they were both outs (4-6-3 DP, and a swinging bunt that the 3B barehanded and threw him out). I would guess his sore knee was partially responsible though he did seem to be running normally. He had a rough day in the field. Though he was only charged with one error ( an in between hop that ate him up), on a few tough chances the ball bounced out of his glove, and he didn’t show a great arm. My guess is he ends up at 2B or in the OF. Continue reading Williamsport Game Report, 7/28

Around the System–OF, Top Half

A look at the outfield for Lehigh Valley, Reading and Clearwater with Lakewood,Williamsport and the GCL Phils to come next week.

Lehigh Valley
Domonic Brown, 24, Phils 20th round pick in 2006; .286/.335/.437 in 206 AB’s; 5HR 26 RBI; 4/10 SB; 7%bb/19% k rates; .327 vs. LH; .273 vs. RH; .377 with RISP.  53 games in the OF with 7 errors (.933); 1.84 R/F. 4 OF assists. I would like to see Brown in Philly and Victorino elsewhere come next week. Continue reading Around the System–OF, Top Half

Domonic Brown Made a Hell of a Grab Tonight (w/video)

Video from tonight’s game against Norfolk.

It’s like the Jiwan James catch, except Domonic actually caught it.

Brody Colvin Promoted to AA

Brody Colvin has gotten the callup from High A Clearwater to AA Reading and is in line to take the rotation spot of recently promoted Jonathan Pettibone.  It has been a bumpy road for Colvin who was removed from the Clearwater rotation for a time, presumably to get his head straight after struggling consistently for two months.  Colvin, a 7th round pick in 2009, has made 18 starts this year and is 4-6 with a 4.48 ERA in 18 starts.  His WHIP as a starter is 1.57 and the opposition is hitting .284 against him. On the brighter side of the equation, Colvin over his last 8 starts is 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA but even during that time period his WHIP is a high 1.51 and the opposition is hitting .301.

Somewhere Adam Morgan, Austin Wright and Jesse Biddle are shaking their heads.

Pettibone Gets The Call-Up

Multiple media sources are reporting that Jonathan Pettibone has been called up to AAA Lehigh Valley.  First report I saw was from @anthonyburkhart of The Republican-Herald in Reading.

Pettibone put forth a strong performance tonight, going 7 innings, giving up just 1 earned run, 3 hits and no walks, and striking out 6 Altoona Curve(s?).  On the season, he was 9-7 in 19 starts for Reading, with a 3.30 ERA, gave up 115 hits, 9 of them homeruns, allowed 27 bb and struck out 81 in 117.1 innings pitched, for a WHIP of 1.21, a k rate of 6.34/9, a very good bb rate of 2.07 and a HR rate of 0.69/9.

For the record, I also saw a report tonight that Jarred Cosart was just called up to AAA in the Houston organization.  So 2 of the 5 so-called “Baby Aces” aces are now in AAA, 2 remain in AA, and one is still repeating A+.

Media Reports

ICYMI – Couple media reports I found interesting this week so far:

Mitch Rupert interviews Joe Jordan Williamsport Sun-Gazette (7-23) Notes on Quinn, Asche, many others, etc.  Good long interview with the man in charge.

Mike Drago on Tyson Gillies Reading Eagle (7-24)

Drago on Trevor May Reading Eagle (7-24)

Mike Newman on Mitch Walding FanGraphs (with defensive drill and BP video) (7-23)

Box Score Recap 7-21-2012

Jesse Biddle takes care of business.  I almost said Biddness.  Which would have been terrible.

Also of note, Larry Greene 2-3, bb, 2b, HR, Edgar Duran with 2 HR, and back-to-back ninth inning jacks from Pullin and Carmona in GCL, both their first as professionals.  And hey, follow me on twitter if you like.  I sometimes post about the minors, sometimes about the big club, sometimes about other randomness, but not so much you’ll hate me for it…well…probably not. @bxe1234

Around the System–Middle Infield

Lehigh Valley

Kevin Frandsen, 30, Re-Signed as a free agent in 2012; /299/.337/.390 in 364 AB’s; 0HR 30 RBI; 2/6SB; 4%bb/7% k rates; .343 vs. LH, .282 vs. RH, .316 with RISP, Hitting .335 since June 1. 75 games at 2B with 7 errors (.980); 4.60 R/F; 10 games at 1B with 1 error (.984); 3 games at SS without an error and 5 games at 3B with 3 errors (.814).WIth all the middle infielders that have spent time in Philly this year, Frandsen has become the forgotten man. I am not sure why as he has been the most consistent hitter Lehigh Valley has had this year.

Andreas Blanco, 28, SIgned as a free agent in 2012; .218/.281/.312 in 285 AB’s; 6HR 19 RBI; 6SB; 8%bb/18% k rates; .207 vs. LH, .223 vs. RH, .209 with RISP; Hitting .179 in July. 79 games at SS with 13 errors (.959); 3.81 R/F;  Blanco has done nothing to stand out and has been merely adequate in the field, in what was thought to be his strong suit. Tyson Gillies Suspended

Reading OF Tyson Gillies has been suspended for what is being called a “violation of team rules”. Gilles has had a myriad of injuries over the last few years and faced a significant “off the field” issue when he was arrested for cocaine possesion. Those charges were later dropped.  Shuld be interesting to see how this one plays out….

Hot or Not

A look back at the time period between 7/11–7/17.

A few observations:  Chris Duffy had perhaps the best offensive week of any player in the system this year.  He needs to move up.

–Very nice to see Roman Quinn as an addition to the hot list.  While struggling with the glove, he is making things happen at the plate and now has 12 SB’s in the early going of the Williamsport season.

–Austin Hyatt had a good start this week after numerous poor outings effectively took him off the map.  Should be interesting to watch how he follows that up.

–Austin Wright and Adam Morgan continue to show they are ready for the transition to AA…Morgan maybe a bit more so than Wright.

–The Julio Rodriguez skeptics are coming out in droves as they suggest he may have been finally figured out.

Finally, I will be on vacation next week, so both the Lehigh Valley Weekly Report and Hot or Not will have to wait until the week after next to get back up and running…With that, see below the jump for stats. Continue reading Hot or Not
