Fall League Update

A one run victory for Scottsdale on Friday evening, as Domonic Brown was the only Phillie prospect that saw action, going 1-4, with a run scored, and a double. Saturday brought the first Fall League start for Troy Hanzawa who went 0-4 with a strikeout and a stolen base, in the Scottsdale 7-3 loss to Phoenix. Domonic Brown went 0-2 with an RBI, Steve Susdorf went 1-4 and Scott Mathieson threw yet another scoreless inning, striking out 2.

After an off day Sunday, the Scorpions suffered a 10-2 blowout loss at the hands of Peo Sagueros.  Domonic Brown provided the only offense for Scottsdale with a two run triple out of the cleanup hole, in a 2-3 effort. Tuffy Gosewisch went 1-3 and threw out one of three runners attempting to steal. Michael Schwimer had a rough outing throwing the last 1.2 innings, and giving up 4 runs (3 earned) on 3 hits.  He walked two, throwing 34 pitches, 20 for strikes. Continue reading Fall League Update

Fall League Update

Steve Susdorf was the only Phillie prospect to see action in Tuesdays’ 7-3 Scottsdale win over Surprise, and Susdorf played a key role in the victory, going 2-3 with 2 runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base.  Wednesdays’ game, a 5-4 Scottsdale loss, saw Mike Cisco take the loss, going 2 innings and getting hit around, giving up 4 runs on 6 hits.  He walked 1 and struck out 2, throwing 48 pitches, 32 for strikes.  Scott Mathieson pitched a scoreless ninth, giving up a lone hit, while striking out one. AT the plate, Domonic Brown returned after a day off and went 0-4, while Steve Susdorf went 1-4 with an RBI. Brown had an outfield assist, which offset an earlier error. Fall League Update

After winning their first two games, the Scorpions of Scottsdale lost three straight, including a loss to #1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg (Phoenix) on Friday evening, before evening up their record at 3-3 last night.

In the 7-4 loss to Phoenix, Steve Susdorf, blasted his first homer of the Fall off of Baltimore prospect Eddie Gamboa. Susdorf was 1-4 on the evening.  Domonic Brown was 1-4 with a run scored and a double on Friday evening. Edgar Garcia took the loss in his second game on the hill, giving up three runs over his 2 innings of work on 3 hits.  He walked 2 and struck out 3.  Michael Schwimer pitched a scoreless 8th for Scottsdale, yielding just a hit. AFL Update

The Scottsdale Scorpions  started their Arizona Fall League schedule on Tuesday and continued with games Wednesday and Thursday, getting out of the gate at 2-1.  Most importantly, looking at Phils prospects thus far, Domonic Brown got off to a quick start with a homer in his first game, followed by two doubles in Game Two, and is at .250 (3-12) with a homer and 3 RBI’s after three games. Steve Susdorf saw action in Game Two, and took a tough “0fer”, going 0-5, while Tuffy Gosewisch caught Game Two, going 2-4 at the plate.

Most impressive on the hill through their initial outings were  Mike Cisco and Scott Mathieson.  Cisco threw 2 shutout innings, starting last nights game, yielding a hit, while walking two and striking out three.  Mathieson was dominant in his two innings of work, striking out two, without yiedling a run or hit, throwing 20 pitches, 17 for strikes.  Edgar Garcia, who saw limited action in the 2009 minor league season due to VISA issues, got the win for Scottsdale in Game One, going 2 innings and giving up a run on one hit.  He walked one and struck out one.  Michael Schwimer saw one inning of work in Game One, giving up a run on two hits.

The Arizona Fall League season begins for the Scottsdale Scorpions this coming Tuesday, October 13th at 6:35.  Look for updates twice a week, plus whenever additional news deems updates necessary. Phils prospects playing for Scottsdale:

Around the System (3B)

New York Penn League Top 20

Baseball America came out with their top 20 prospects in the New York Penn League and three Phils prospects made the list.  At #4 is Catcher Sebastian Valle, #11 is 3B Anthony Hewitt and at #16 is OF Leandro Castro. Baseball America does have scouting reports attached to each player, however, that is reserved for their pay site.
