Michael Schwimer Interview

Michael Schwimer was kind enough to give me a few minutes of his time prior to the Lehigh Valley game on Sunday evening, one day after he pitched 2.2 scoreless against Norfolk, extending his scoreless to streak to six outings since his promotion from AA Reading.  Here is what he had to say about a number of issues…

On his most recent outing..” I felt good…pitches were good, the fastball had good late life, the slider was biting pretty good, my change I could throw whenever I wanted to, late in counts and had a good tail.  Important for me on the change up is the location rather than the movement…I throw a four seam change so it comes out like a four seam fastball…I go for location and I go for speed differentiation.” Continue reading Michael Schwimer Interview

‘Pigs Weekend Report

A look at the Lehigh Valley weekend, transactions, probables and notes, with Lehigh Valley on top in 6 of their last 7 games.

Friday–A pretty ugly loss to Norfolk as Lehigh Valley was coming off an 8 game road trip, very long travel day and two rain delays in their 8-3 defeat at the hands of the Tides.  Homers by Josh Bell and Brandon Snyder gave Norfolk a 3-0 lead off of ‘Pigs starter Brian Mazone (5-11) who was less than sharp yielding 3 runs on 10 hits in his 5 innings of work.  A three run homer by Michael Aubrey in the 6th off of Oscar Villarreal put the game out of reach at 6-0. Lehigh Valley managed a few late runs on Domonic Brown’s 5th homer as an IronPig, a two run shot and an RBI double by Andy Tracy. Brown, Tracy and Chris Duffy all had two hits for Lehigh Valley. The recent struggles of reliever Mike Zagurski continued as he gave up 2 runs in his 0.2 innings of work. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Report

Around the System, Relief Pitchers , Bottom Half

A look at the relief pitching in the lower half of the organization.

Lakewood

Justin Beal, 24, Williamsport: 4 games, 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA, 4.2 IP 1BB 1K; Lakewood: 8 games, 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA; 14.1 IP 14H 5BB 10K, .280 opp. avg. The Phils 28th round pick in the ’09 draft has done enough to stick around and turn a head or two.

Mike Bolsenbroek, 23, 8 games, 0-0 with a 2.84 ERA; 12.2 IP 15H 7BB 9K, 1.00 GO/AO; .306 opp. avg. 42nd round pick in the ’08 draft hasn’t been great and hasn’t been horrible. Continue reading Around the System, Relief Pitchers , Bottom Half

Lehigh Valley Weekly Report

A crazy post all star break week, with players coming and going up and down the organization.  Lehigh Valley has gone 4-3  since the all star break, and now stand at 41-57, in 5th place of the Northern Division of the International League, 16.5 games behind division leading Scranton.

Selling the Drama

It continues in Philly, with Vance Worley, 22, getting called up to the big club one day after Jamie Moyer went down with an elbow strain and Andrew Carpenter lasted one outing (3IP, 3ER) in his latest attempt with the Phils.  Carpenter was optioned back to AAA Lehigh Valley.  One other notable transaction today, from a Phillies perspective had Nelson Figueroa getting picked up on waivers by the Houston Astros.  Worley the Phils 3rd round pick in the ’08 draft has been very strong as of late going 3-0 with a 1.17 ERA in his 3 July starts for AA Reading.  On the year he is 9-4 with a 3.20 ERA.  He has thrown 112.2 IP, allowed 114 hits, walked 36 and struck out 83.  Opponents are hitting .264 on him for the year with a WHIP of 1.33.

An interesting move to say the least when the presumption was that JA Happ was pulled from yesterdays start for Lehigh Valley after 3 innings in preparation for a possible weekend start for the big club.  That could still happen, but this is interesting nonetheless.  And let the talk continue….

Around the System–Relievers, Top Half

Another look at how relievers are performing at the top half of the Phils minor league system as the trade deadline approaches.  Look for reliever updates for Lakewood, Williamsport and GCL this weekend or next week.

Lehigh Valley

Antonio Bastardo, 24, 7 games with Lehigh Valley and has not allowed an earned run while striking out 10 in 5.2 innings.  Bastardo has bounced around so much the last two years, that the fact that he is still just 24 is easily forgotten.  He continues to have good stuff.  Staying off the DL and command issues are the key.

Alex Concepcion, 25, 22 games, 2-2 with a 5.10 ERA; 30 IP 23H  16BB 18K, 5 hr allowed, 1.30 WHIP; 0.92 GO/AO; .205 opp. avg., .280 with RISP; .260 vs. LH, .161 vs. RH. Concepcion has been hurt badly by the home run ball.  He throws strikes and has a very good change up but needs more consistency. Continue reading Around the System–Relievers, Top Half

Carpenter Called Up, Kendrick Optioned

The Phillies optioned starter Kyle Kendrick to AAA Lehigh Valley after a very rough outing for him against the Cardinals last night that featured multiple mound visits by Rich Dubee.  Called up to fill in Kendrick’s roster spot is right hander Drew Carpenter.  It is unclear righ now if Carpenter will take Kendrick’s turn in the rotation.  Kendrick, who the 3rd best ERA in the Phils starting rotation, joins Lehigh Valley having gone 5-4 with a 4.82 ERA in 18 starts for the Phils.  Carpenter has been consistent for Lehigh Valley, going 7-6 with a 3.41 ERA in his 18 starts.  Certainly an interesting move in light of the fact that JA Happ sits in Lehigh Valley as well.  Happ has not yet put together a solid start for Lehigh Valley struggling at least mildly in each outing.

‘Pigs Weekend Update

Friday–Lehigh Valley lost their second straight game, post All Star break, this time 7-3 to Louisville.  An RBI single by Domonic Brown got the ‘Pigs on the board in the first inning and they then added 2 more in the 4th on a Paul Hoover RBI single and a Brian Bocock Sac Fly, making it 3-0.  Louisville began chipping away and before Lehigh Valley turned around, Louisville scored 7 unanswered for the victory. Drew Carpenter started and was adequate, going 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits.  He walked one and struck out 4.  Oscar Villarreal (1-3) took the loss in relief.  John Mayberry had his 2nd consecutive three hit game, while Paul Hoover added 2 hits of his own. Aroldis CHapman got the win in relief for Lousiville, striking out all four Lehigh Valley hitters he faced. Continue reading ‘Pigs Weekend Update

Transactions Update

Quick update as I am out in Chicago for the Phils series against the Cubs and experiencing Wrigley for the first time…First Reading OF Quintin Berry was picked up by the San Diego organization after being designated for assignment by the Phils, who needed a 40 man roster spot.

Reliever Chad Durbin was activated by the Phils, returning the bullpen to full strength for the first time all season.  Nelson Figueroa was the victim of this activation, as I am sure the Phils hope he clears waivers and accepts an assignment to Lehigh Valley to continue to give them the insurance he has provided thus far.  Also, reliever Antonio Bastardo was activated and optioned to AAA Lehigh Valleym giving the ‘Pigs some interesting roster decisions coming up as well.

Around the System, Bottom Half

A look at the bottom half of the system, with a good deal of talent to talk about.

Lakewood

Brody Colvin, 19, 17 games, 5-6 with a 3.87 ERA; 93 IP 82H 31BB 80K, 1.21 WHIP, .234 opp. avg., 1.11 GO/AO; .217 vs. LH, .245 vs. RH, .209 with RISP. Colvin may be the biggest bright spot among the pitchers in the organization since May. Since May 1, he is 4-3 with a 2.43 ERA in 13 starts, walking 22 and striking out 71 in 77.2 innings of work.

Trevor May, 20, 16 games in Clearwater, 5-5 with a 5.01 ERA; 70 IP 53H 61BB 90K; .212 opp. avg., 0.76 GO/AO, 1.63 WHIP. Has made two starts in Lakewood with a line of: 11IP 11H 7ER 5BB 13K. May’s problems are well documented as his control.  He has as much talent as anyone in the organization but needs to find the plate. He is currently averaging 7.33 BB/9, while also averaging 11.44 K/9. Continue reading Around the System, Bottom Half
