We’re down to the final 2 spots in what has been a very successful 2011 Reader Top 30. Percival Garner easily takes the 28th spot over Scott Mathieson, Cameron Rupp and Nick Hernandez. The voting for the final 2 spots should be interesting. The plan will be to have the final voting finished on Tuesday, and then I will kick off my Top 30 for 2011 on Thursday. I’m going to unveil 3 prospects per day for 10 days to give you my top 30, then go over a list of sleepers and potential breakout players. On an unrelated note, I hope you enjoy the new organizational method for the site, including adding the player profile pages, updating the primer at the top, and updating the draft picks register. Look for more changes and additions going forward.

Site re-organization

Maintenance
Hello all. Just a brief note on the site. I’m in the process of adding a number of new features to the site, starting with player profiles for all of our key prospects, with a huge assist from Dave and Ryan. As we finish these profiles, I wanted them to be easier to access, and more user friendly in terms of making updates. If you hover your mouse over the “Profiles” tab at the top of the site, you will now see new menus for hitters and pitchers, and then the individual profiles as well. My hope is this makes it easier to quickly navigate to a profile you’re looking for. In a similar manner, I’ve updated the draft picks section, creating separate pages for the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010 draft picks. Going forward, I want to use this method for organizing new pages and content that will be continuously updated. I’m going to leave this post stuck to the top of the site for a while so everyone knows what is going on. Thanks for continuing to come back while we renovate the site!

Aaron Altherr to give third base a try

A source gave me the heads up a few weeks ago that the Phillies had given Aaron Altherr a few looks at 3B this winter, and now that Keith Law brought up the fact in his article today, I suppose its news fit for public consumption. I was told that he spent some time working out with Eric Chavez this winter, as they share the same agent….Altherr and Chavez, not Keith Law and Chavez. Early reports were positive, and it appears that his performance this spring will determine whether or not the Phillies go forward with the experiment. Altherr was a shortstop in high school, so the move to 3B is not really a huge stretch, certainly not as difficult as trying to become a catcher, or learning how to perfect the double play turn up the middle. Third base, in essence, is a reaction position, so it will come down to his footwork and instincts. This will be one of the more interesting story lines to follow in spring training.

Head over to espn.com (insider only, obviously) again today to check out Keith’s Top 100. Fresh off the strength of a top 5 placement for the farm system as a whole, 5 Phillies prospects crack his top 100. They are:

To think we placed more prospects in his Top 100 this year, and the farm system ranking improved even after trading for Roy Oswalt is astounding.

Keith Law ranks the Phillies farm system 5th in MLB

Top Prospect Lists

Head over to espn.com and check out Keith’s writeup (insider only) of the 30 farm systems. He highlights the Phillies ridiculously stocked Lakewood team in 2010, and also highlights that we’ve stocked our system, despite all the trades, on a relatively tight budget. Imagine if we equipped our scouts, some of the best in the game, with the budgets of the big spending teams. Also, that sound you hear is Mets fans screaming that life just isn’t fair. The Mets found themselves ranked 26th. Better luck next year!
