Here’s a new Phillies Discussion. 

The trade deadline spawned almost 400 comments this week.

One thing I need to stress and I’m sure that most of you realize this when post-trade deadline anger subsides.  The Phillies tried.

The Phillies were in on more than the two major league and two minor league trades that were reported this week.  They were in on hundreds of deals of various iterations during the days, hours, and minutes leading up to the deadline.  (By various iterations I mean player A for Player B or Player A for players B and C, or Players A and D for Player E, or Player F for Players B and C, …)

That the Phillies didn’t trade for a player you wanted doesn’t mean they weren’t in on that player.  That the player package that a team accepted for a player you wanted seemed to be a deal the Phillies could have matched or bettered doesn’t make it so.  (Remember, most evaluators don’t give the Phillies high marks for their prospects, so our guys probably don’t match up well when we compare prospect rankings.)  Sometimes the players the team wanted from the Phillies might have been far superior to the players the Phillies were willing to pay.  Sometimes another GM might just not like the Phillies.  And sometimes not agreeing to lift a no-trade clause actually means the player is not willing to approve a trade.  Even to a team with an aging roster competing for one of the final two wild cards.

It’s one thing to wish the Phillies could have made trades for players you wanted.  It’s another thing to think they didn’t try and make trades for those players.

Oh, and thank you to the guys who policed that horrible comment.  I appreciate that you took the matter into your hands to educate that commenter.  I deleted the comment when I saw it.  Unfortunately, comments have a mother/daughter relationship and when I deleted the comment, it also removed your comments.  Thank you again for your efforts to keep the section respectable.  (I wanted to “appropriate” but am unsure that the word doesn’t have a connotation nowadays that I don’t want to introduce into the discussion.)

Important Dates

  • July 27, 2026, 5:00 p.m. ET: Deadline to sign 2026 draft picks
    • Deadline applies to players drafted out of 4-year colleges and HS
  • August 3, 2026: MLB trade deadline at 6:00 P.M. ET
  • August 7-8, 2026: Date players who signed on July 23-24 have to placed on a roster (15 days after signing for both draftees and UDFAs)
  • August 13, 2026: Field of Dreams Game, Thursday game from Phillies at Twins series
  • December 1, 2026 (11:59 p.m. ET): MLB Collective Bargaining Agreement expires.

        1. Romus. When the Phillies and Dodgers played few weeks ago the Dodgers led in double plays by a large number. Last I looked one usually needs to hit the ball for a GIDP. Lots of Phillies guys just take the stride back to the dugout with their bat on the shoulder.

          Guys that are not speed guys who hit the ball will hit into more DPs if the team has guys who get on ahead of them. Maybe why Phillies only rank 18th.

      1. I think he isn’t a starting pitcher. Second his stuff isn’t. great, he slings the ball. I just seen him as relief pitcher at best. This is just my opinion.

      Kids stayed at hotel near stadium. Like a mile. Visited Chickie and Pete’s. They were told Angelos was really good. Other than meeting you and getting a pic and autograph had a great time.

      Pumpkins are green now. Like fried green tomatoes. Green till mid-October and then turn ghoulish Orange for Halloween.

      Jim. I too applaud Harper. That is a complete team player move. It does not happen overnight. Ball in extra innings other night was the first one I thought he probably should have caught. It will take time. Guys that play out there all the time make worse throws. He will be ok. I am sure he is not going to run into the wall anymore if he can help it. He did that some back in the younger days.

      The strikeouts just so wear me out, but I am going to leave it at that. It is going to be a struggle for Phillies now to land that 5 or 6 playoff spot. Cubs have got away now for the 4.

  5. Can’t lose games like that if you want to hold position and or gain in the standings. That 5th inning was putrid with 2/3rd no outs and get no runs from 1-3.. lot of weak throws from Harper as well not that i think they have anybody else who would have gunned anybody sans injured Garcia but woof.. dudes throwing worm food out there.. wheels looked rattled too after being “yelled” at about the rubber and shiz and 15 pitch AB never helps… just ugly ball all around tonight really

  6. I’m not criticizing Harper. He volunteered to move out to RF for the good of the team. I give him a lot of credit for that.

    And if they want me to believe that the they never thought of asking Turner to move to the outfield, fine. But he should have at least gone to management and asked if there was anything he could do to help the team. We know he didn’t because they would certainly have mentioned that when they were getting pummeled with questions. (Okay, we don’t really know.)

    Back to Harper. I have observed that he looks tentative on balls over his head and close to the wall. I have counted 3 or 4 (maybe more?) balls that most of our recent right fielders would have caught. Even Castellano would have made those catches.

    But, Harper moved to make room for a new player. And he did it without the reps he would need to get back up to speed. I will always give him credit for his commitment to the team. That will be my mantra every time he has to go back for a ball.

    2. He had issues in the past when going back to the wall. He actually missed a few back in the day when he was in RF. So I was plenty happy when they moved him to 1B.

      Now that he’s back in RF for the rest of the season, he looks really tentative going near the wall, his speed is not great, and now he doesn’t have the arm strength to scare anybody. But hey, he volunteered (which I give him credit for) but this is a classic case of be careful what you wish for. He’s easily top 5 worst defensive RF in baseball.

  8. I don’t really get the Phillies thinking here, why move Harper to RF for Bohm? Bohm can’t hit RHP this year, he’s got a .221 ave, .329 slug and a .617 OPS. He is better vs LHP with a .233 ave, .426 slug and a .699 OPS but why not keep Harper at 1B and move Bohm to the bench, put De La Cruz in RF and if he struggles put Hill in there.

      1. Romus. Just me but I think Bohm was the last piece in the 4-position move. One thing that does bother me is that DeLaCruz was doing well and now he sits. By the time someone in the analytical area realizes that he will be cooled off. He should play somewhere at this time. They are not going to shuffle Harper back and forth from RF to 1B. Not going to happen at this stage. Plus, DeLaCruz appears to be an adequate defensive guy in the OF. No analytics, just the eyeball test.

        As I have mentioned to Romus and Ruff, I would like to see a different batting order, but it is pretty clear that is not going to happen. My order might have had the ball hit somewhere to add a run rather than 3 Ks in a row.

    3. bohm should not be playing. He has a negative 1.2 war on the season. Doesn’t hit for power, poor fielder and base runner. This guy should not be in the lineup. I’d even consider calling up Kieboom for a cup of coffee.

    1. I really like Bogenpohl. Obviously a .556 BABIP isn’t sustainable so his hitting line isn’t likely to last that high, but despite only 19 PAs, things that I do like:

      • 16% walk rate. He had a 20% walk rate in college so this feels like the kid has a great approach and will take pitches.
      • Only a 12.5% o-swing rate. Again, small sample size, but also take into account that he is likely to be overly anxious to make an impression as a new draftee. so showing plate discipline this early is a good sign.
      • He hits the ball really, really hard. Last night, his two singles were 101.5 and 100.6 mph EV. Every time I see his contact it seems very hard. The kid is a monster of a human. So he can do damage.

      Is it possible that we actually hit on a draft pick who wasn’t a first round pick? It’s too early to tell, but there are good early signs.

      2. After the draft I read that, when the Phillies worked him out before the draft, they made some suggestions about his swing, and he took to them immediately, which suggests that he might turn out to be a different hitter than his college record suggests.

    2. He is a big guy, as big as Giancarlo Stanton. It will be interesting to see if he can stick at RF or eventually become 1B/DH.

  11. Jim ……… perhaps you and Steve Potter could help us poor people who have no idea of what this faceless analytical group actually does. Who rides herd on the group to see that what they are selling is producing? Where are the lines of demarcation between the manager/the group? Who does what? Is it just advice that the manager can veto if he chooses? Who sets the lineup for the day? How much power does the Ateam possess?

    That is the gist of the question. I’m interested in the responses of those who know a little about what transpires behind the scenes. Not interested in those who believe or think they know!

  12. I posted in the last thread that Harper should be on first and that Stott and Bohm should platoon at third. Stott struggles against lefties and Bohm does the same versus righties.

    This would leave DeLaCruz to play daily in RF. They had Garcia playing there every day until his injury and he didn’t hit a lick. DeLaCruz won’t match his defense but will hit better.

    1. I wouldn’t assume that DLC will continue to hit better than Garcia. Reyes and Rincones proved that it can, in fact, be worse.

      That said, DLC has certainly played well enough to earn MORE playing time. Is he a long term solution? Probably not. But he’s a better one than we had before him.

      As for a Stott and Bohm platoon, there’s a couple problems there.

      1) Stott actually has a reverse platoon split this year. Part of that can be attributed to how often he sits against the “good” lefties, but he’s putting up numbers when he plays.

      2) Bohm doesn’t just struggle against righties, he struggles against EVERYONE. Not only is he hitting worse against lefties than Stott this year, he’s hitting worse against them than Stott EVER has.

      3) We all know Bohm is a headcase. Do any of us really believe he could adapt to reduced playing time without sulking?

      Honestly, I’d been advocating for them to just bench Bohm. But with number 3 in mind and realizing he’d probably play even WORSE coming off the bench, we should just cut our losses and release him.

      1. The way it looks right now….Bohm may not see the contract he is looking for. This season just may be his best salaried year. I really do not see any third base options out there that will pay him what he wants.

    1. Slumping a bit so far in August (.250/.280/.333) and hasn’t homered since July 29th. But his numbers for the year are still good (.270/.333/.432).

      1. I am a huge Topper fan. The team got off to a terrible start and maybe some or even most of that is on Topper – who knows? But, on the whole, I think he’s the best overall manager of the Phillies I’ve seen since I started watching the team in the early 90s. Charlie was a better “manager of men” (he might be one of the best ever at the people side of the job) but when you add case strategy into this, I think Topper, on the whole, was number one. It’s hard to name the worst manager – there’s so much competition for that title (including Sandberg, who was dreadful and a freaking quitter!!!), but Joe Girardi was shockingly bad – bad at managing people and absolutely horrible in-game decision maker. I didn’t see that coming.

  19. For the crew that believes defense is not important, Bohm’s defense in the 10th inning cost us the game tonight. If he makes the right play on Ernie Clement’s grounder, that’s the second out and Giminez’s sac fly is just a fly out for the last out of the inning. We go to bottom of 10th tied 4-4. Arraez’s sac fly wins it.

    Clement’s hit went down as an infield single but it was a terrible defensive play by Bohm and it cost us a game.

    1. Also for anyone who wonders how the defensive analytics metric DRS works, that is a play that should go down as an out. There was no error charged so standard fielding percentage isn’t impacted. But an ordinary effort that’s an out. DRS deducts 1 point on that play.

          I don’t hate Arraez as a player. He clearly is a productive MLB position player. I just hate how he fits into this team and the implications of how this roster is constructed. We sold two highly talented pitching prospects for a rental band-aid that solved one problem but created others. It shows poor planning.

  21. When the Phillies drafted Bohm #4 overall, many of us expected the team had finally found the 3Bman to replace Schmidt. We figured he’d be a middle of the order bat that would eventually hit for power and play a slightly better than average third base. Obviously, that did not transpire.

    At the same time, I cannot totally blame him for that play last night. The tendency for infielders is to first look to throw to second base on a grounder to keep the force in order. Bohm took too long to realize he had no play at second and therefore couldn’t get an out anywhere.

    Be that as it may, but I have to give Bohm credit for saving a couple of Stott throws to first base from being errors. The scoops he made on those throws were as much as you can ask from any first baseman. I’ve said/written my opinions so go ahead and pile on. I expect nothing less than that.

    1. One of those plays was a great scoop. The other one was routine — Stott bounced the throw on purpose, as McCarthy and Kruk discussed.

      Not getting the out at first on the slow roller just shows a complete lack of baseball IQ. There was never a chance to get an out at second or third on a ball hit that softly.

    2. This isn’t little league. This is the big boy league and the expectations is to win a championship. You don’t get points for good plays and a free pass on terrible plays. The expectation is to make all of the plays.

      That said, I don’t blame Bohm either…I blame DD’s roster construction. Bohm has been a terrible defender his entire career. His draft report questioned his defense. For the longest time on this blog I pounded the table to get rid of Bohm and replace him with Chapman.

      But it is not his fault, nor is it Stott’s fault that he is being moved mid season. It is poor roster management. That is 100% on DD.

      1. Personally I don’t see why Harper can’t be at 1B. De La Cruz in RF. It is ok to sit Bohm. It’s not like these guys are tearing up the league on defense or with their bats.

Even with some time to throw over the runner at second is a really hard play. You take the sure out at first. It’s 2 outside runners on second and third. How anyone can defend that stupid play is beyond ne

  25. I agree with everything being said about DD and all his failures. But the one Phillies World isn’t talking enough about is what in the bloody heck is he doing to fix the drafting and development wing of this organization? What steps have been taken that we just haven’t seen the fruits of yet? What steps is he going to take to admit his failures and take a different approach? Until that is fixed, all this other stuff is just noise as a part of a much bigger problem – a terrible disgraceful bottom 5% org in the drafting and developing of talent.

    1. Instructs won’t happen until after the season. He’s at the Complex working with the development staff. Based on history, if Spangler is going to be promoted this season it will likely happen this week. Off day Monday, new 6-game series starts on Tuesday on the road.

  27. On Jim’s comment on removing the temp tag from Mattingly (but not keeping him), today was the 7th appearance by Kerkering in 9 days. He’s not even on fumes at this point. I have no idea what the dugout dynamics are among coaching staff, but I just can’t believe Cotham’s on board with this.

    1. The problem is that the Phillies are in a stretch of 14 games in a row and either the starters are not going deep into games or there are extra innings. Not only that, Backhus was recently optioned down so he can’t come up right now. Seth Johnson and Nolan Hoffman were both traded. Rangel is up for Shugart.

  29. Has there been any update on Moisés Chace? I also wonder why he’s not on the IL, at least according to the Phillies site. They are currently at 39 so they do have room and if they needed to make more changes, they can always DFA Grant Holman or Brian Keller perhaps.

    – Likely to miss entire year. Hasn’t swung a bat in 6 months and isn’t near return
    – Phillies can’t rely on him for 2027
    – His being unavailable has changed their strategy

    1. That is disappointing but priority #1 is his health. The Phillies will no doubt find another medical plan for Miller and hope that it works.

      1. They have not shared a lot of information about the actual medical issue. But from what I have read, it is not a fixable problem. The surgery he had actually doesn’t “fix” the issue. It simply disables the nerves to hide the pain. But since he is past his return to play date, it is reasonable to conclude that it was not entirely successful. Very frustrating.

          1. Romus – I’ll tell you, i don’t have A PT degree…but I have enough of a background to take a “swing at it” …certainly enough PT sessions over the years.

            Sometimes the issue is you find the muscle/tendon/ligament causing the issue, but you can over work. I could speculate, but … aint’ no one from that team gonna talk to me. I do suspect they figure it out, but be prepared for it to take a long time. This sounds like a “throw the kitchen sink at it” type of diagnosis. It would not surprise me if he doesn’t swing a bat for another year and half. Will likely forget about him and then news will break he’s swinging the bat.

When I read the first big Inquirer article about this, which I had to read at least twice to figure out what they were saying and where this was going, my reaction was “damn, this is not good and this procedure will not fix the problem.” The best I could tell is that you get the procedure so you can relieve the pain, so you can do other rehab that you hop can fix the problem before the nerves grow back and get in the way of the rehab. Yikes!!!

  34. Crazy stat of the day – Stott and Marsh now have exactly the same OPS. It shows you just how a long a baseball season really is and how a terrible or great month or so can change a player’s season dramatically.

    One other thing. This Bo Bichette thing has me thinking a lot. It has me thinking about how we dodged a bullet. And it also has me thinking about how poor a judge of hitting talent I believe DD to be even though, obviously, Bichette has been far worse than expected and will probably bounce back next year. You don’t want your team to be giving really long term deals to Castellanos, Turner and Bichette – none of those guys could field very well but they also aren’t/weren’t great hitters. They were all, at one point, very good, but seriously flawed hitters. And I do understand that DD brought in Schwarber and re-signed him, and he gets credit for that and the Marsh trade, but nearly every other hitter move he’s made, including for the annual over-the-hill 33 year old he brings in every year and fails as predictably as the sun rises, has backfired.

Stop signing DHs and hoping that they can play in the field. Third, I didn’t want Bichette from the jump.   35. I hope Mattingly does not want to continue to manage, especially if Preston Mattingly is important to the future of this team. If they have to fire DM, it’s possible and perhaps likely, PM will ultimately become disaffected and will leave. I pointed out this ticking time bomb when they hired DM to manage. If you don’t believe PM is important to the team’s future, it doesn’t matter much, but if he is, this was a risky hire in my view.

      2. The pitching and defense in the league are really bad, which should be expected considering you’re largely dealing with kids who should be in high school. Look at Renteria’s triple today, at almost any other level in the states that’s a can of corn. But tor me, it’s more about the process than the results.

        What I like about Parra/Renteria/Ramirez/Prieto is they hit the ball hard consistently. On top of that Parra (32K/42BB) and Renteria (32K/27BB) have a real feel for the strikezone that I think will allow them to continue to make quality contact as they move up.

        That being said, I have my quibbles with everyone. Prieto strikes out at a 27% clip and I’m not really sure what his position is, Renteria has a 51% groundball rate but overcomes it with good speed and hitting the ball hard against bad defenses, Parra over the last month has shown the ability to be more than a Punch and Judy hitter, and Ramirez has a .507 BABIP entering today. So there’s plenty of room for growth for all of them. But they’re definitely interesting.

  38. My Chase Utley night was really cool however it was a long long day. We got to K lot around 2 ish. Went in for the ceremony at 5:30 ish. Tarp went on at 6 ish and didn’t end up getting home til 1 ish.

    My buddies think me a negative Nancy or whatever but really its just seeing the trees from the forest.

    As I and a handful of others noted weeks before the trade deadline no one trade was going to fix all the problems with this roster and here we are.

    Who knows if Marquez would have migrated through the system to become a solid 2-3 (maybe more) rotation piece but I would have liked to find out. Who knows if Gair would one day soon be an 8th or 9th inning guy but I would have liked to find out.

    Especially given it would mean virtually 0 payroll allocated to them.

  39. Tim Anderson just retired at age 33. He had a solid 4 year stretch from 2018-21, but he went from .806 OPS to .582 OPS in 2 years. His decline was fast and furious for a shortstop.

  40. To Catch’s point about Stott and Marsh, earlier this season we all thought we were seeing a breakout year from Marsh at age 28. We weren’t. He’s a decent player. Career OPS+ of 105, OPS+ this year of 101. Career OPS against lefties of .593, this year .640 (better, but not good). Under team control next year, but after that the Phils may look to upgrade.

            3. What makes a good manager though? I think baseball is way less important than basketball and football. Have good rapport with players, don’t kill your bullpen, and don’t do weird crap all the time. Managers aren’t calling players and coming up with strategies.

              Charlie Manuel – love him. He was a rapport guy. Thomson took us to the World Series and was one of the most successful managers we’ve had – rapport guy (and maybe toward the end that ran out a little bit). I’ve never seen Dave Roberts lauded as a tactician – rapport guy.

              Bad rapport – Sandberg, Girardi.
              Killed bullpen – Mattingly, Girardi (though I can’t remember)

              Bad rapport, killed bullpen, weird crap – Kapler.

              Cora may be a tactician but seems to have bad rapport with the players in Boston. Managers really can’t have big egos unless they are incredibly successful.

              Wathan seems to have support of the players. He’s managed in the minors successfully. That doesn’t mean he’ll be good but who knows?

              Craig Counsell probably the best manager right now in baseball? What makes him good?

      1. From what Ruben said…they cut out 2/3 pitches out of his inventory of pitches….and just concentrate on basically 3 or 4. The sinker and curve have become rarely used now…..the change has increased with the new grip they employed for him to use……and the slider/sweeper or whatever it trurn into after release, is another more commonly used pitch with the 4Smr and change-up.

    3. His changeup looked really good. He has apparently ditched his splitter, which is a positive move. I mentioned after his first two starts back from the minors that it was very encouraging, and now three starts is a trend. I thought Mattingly might pull him after 5 innings, and then again when it was second and third in the sixth, but maybe Mattingly didn’t trust Rangel . . .

      If Painter pitches down the stretch like he has in his last three starts it’s a huge, huge positive for this team. Also, Nola in his last 3 starts has a 3.24 ERA (and unlike Painter, Nola hasn’t gotten lucky with BABIP in his last three starts). If Nola and Painter pitch to ERAs in the 3.00 – 4.00 range down the stretch, this team should win a lot of games, despite it’s lineup flaws.

          His current WHIP is the highest of his career. He’s pitching like a 4/5 but he’s getting paid as a 2/3. Unfortunately, he’s still owed 4/98.

          If Nola was on the last year of his deal, you would strongly consider DFAing him. If he had options, he would have been sent down already. Now, the Phillies are stuck with him because they don’t want to eat $98M.

Arraez is a must for this club. With him, Crawford & Stort… they should have the contacf portion of the offense covered.     2. It’s not the run so much as how it was scored. Walking the first batter, immediately allowing him to steal second (his jump was ridiculous. JT made a perfect throw on what was effectively a pitch-out and still had no chance), and then throwing middle-middle to two batters. He was pretty lucky that Fermin didn’t also crush that hanging slider.

      The strikeout and third out were encouraging. He hit the edges against Blaze Jordan. And he just overpowered Burleson. But he by no means looks like a finished product. I’m not writing him off or saying he won’t be a major league pitcher long term. Just that I understand why they wanted him to keep working on stuff in the minors.

We don’t know whether Renteria will become a star, but this is what star players tend to look like in rookie ball. There’s every reason to think this guy is all that and a bag of chips – by all early signs a phenomenal signing and perhaps the only truly untouchable prospect in the system.

The leadoff single was a bloop, the two out single to score the first run probably would have been an out for a better defensive 1B. The next single was just a good swing on a pitch that got too much plate. And then the double was just the hitter beating him. Caught up to a pitch that was high and outside.

      The second double wasn’t a GREAT pitch (too much plate), but it was barely in the zone.

    The Giants were proactive when they traded Patrick Bailey (who has 3 years of control left) away when they realized that he couldn’t hit. But at least Bailey was a GG. The Phillies should have done the same thing with Bohm when they saw that he had no power and poor defense at 3B. So the Phillies paid Bohm almost $22M in arbitration money just to hope that Bohm would turn it around. Bohm has been pretty much replacement level his entire career.

    The Phillies need a progressive GM who’s willing to make the hard choices.

  78. Well, it’s easy to say it’s time to move on when the team is playing lifeless baseball. There’s plenty of schedule left. Any number of bats could catch fire and the next thing you know, they’re breathing down the Braves’ necks, play well heading into the post season, and who knows….

    But, whether they totally drop out of contention from here on, or make a dramatic turnaround toward October…

    At season’s end, it’s time to move on.

    Dombrowski, Harper, Bohm, Alvarado, Mattingly, Marsh, the batting coach (name?), Dusty, T-Mac, the Phanatic…

    No tears, no regrets, they gave it a shot. Had ample opportunity to bring home the f***ing trophy. The farm isn’t great but let’s see what the youth can do. While I know Rincones doesn’t hit LHPs, I think he projects decently as a future platoon OF/DH.

  79. Well the Jays just won 3 in a row against the Red Sox after winning the series against us. If St. Louis goes in and beats the Cubs in that series, maybe we should schedule a scrimmage against ourselves. Apparently we fix the teams we play against.

  82. Rocco. Ruff has one of the pics of the milk can going up to the stadium from this morning. I saw you horse out on the pasture. Seemed all the stables were clean. I have lots of good pics but only Ruff can get them all. I have issues with some I send to Romus.

    Hopefully they get to play. Long, long ago I got to play in a game where the field was surrounded by crops like this one. Not nearly as nice looking as the Iowan’s have done. I was surprised to learn today that this is only the 3rd Field of Dreams game to be played. 2021, 2022 and tonight. Here is one for you. Game 1 had 8 HRs. Game 2 had 0 HRs. What are your thoughts on the over and under tonight? Nola for Phillies.
