Phillies Discussion 8/28/2025

The Phillies were swept by the Mets and looked terrible throughout the series.

Their lead over the Mets has been reduced to four games.  Additionally, their 2-7 record against the Mets has lost them the first tiebreaker regardless of the outcome of remaining four-game series between the teams.

They return home for a four-game series against the Braves and go on the road for series against the Brewers and Marlins before returning home for that four-game series with the Mets.

The rest of their final 29 games continues with five, three-game series against the Royals, Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Marlins, and Twins.  The way the Phillies are playing, this looks a lot more difficult than it did last week.

The next five weeks will be more interesting than we had hoped.

This is your Phillies discussion.

Oh, the good news is that the Eagles begin their season next Thursday.  Go Birds!

      1. Yeah, I agree. It hasn’t helped that the minor leagues have not provided a legitimate every day bat since Alec Bohm and Stott came up and those guys are very average-ish at the plate. And the only decent arm we promoted this year has already been traded. This team still has a fighting chance to do something, but this last series was ugly.

      2. Romus. No joy in PP Ville today. I did not see a 0 for 3 coming. I really thought they would hold serve like Brewers did going to Wrigley. I was unaware though it is either 9 or 10 straight losses at Citi. Wow. Agree on pathetic. This team has a lot of Ground Hog Day in it. Same thing resurfaces over and over. Also agree on no consistent hitting.

They need to get some wins against Braves, or they may be out of 1st place by this time next week. Saw Albies only has 3 HRs and 9 rbi last 2 games. Maybe he will be tired running the bases.

      3. Agree, actually always been the bats with this group ……. subtract Schwarber and they don’t seem to pile on anybody or they’ll score 13 and than retreat for a few days with 2 or 3 runs scored.

          1. probably Turner, I think his contract is bad, but it is 41 million cheaper than Lindor and they are both in their thirties.

            Like

            1. Lindor reminds me a lot of Jimmy Rollins…moxy and what not….and is the leader on that team. Turner has played in 60 play-off games vs Lindor’s 41, and they are big games for sure, but Turner seems too laid back for me. It is close….but I lean with Lindor.

              Liked by 1 person

            2. Lindor is a better player (so is worth more money) and has a better contract. The Lindor contract ends when he is 37, meaning a dead year or two at the end of the contract, at most. The Turner contract ends when he is 40 – meaning it could be as many as 3- 5 dead years.

        1. They put up a graphic of what Schwarber had done in the wins and losses last night. He is the one who has carried the team this season. Not a good thing to rely so much on one player for success.

          Liked by 1 person

            1. That is what the graphic they showed told. If he does nothing Phillies lose. Agree he did nothing. Since he only bats one cannot blame his defense.

      4. Romus. Prior to series Mets were 7-13 in August. They had some really ugly losses in that span. They did not look like 7-13 team the last 3 days. Seems the Phillies must bring out the best and Mets bring out the worst for Phillies. How else do you explain it. If playoffs began today, it would be Phillies vs Mets in best of 3. I would not be very thrilled with that scenario.

  1. Close call, only see Lindor when we play the Mutts and he is “killing” us in 2025! I really do like his attitude and can see he is a motivator.

  2. We lack a spark plug on offense. An emotional heartbeat, a catalyst, a vocal leader both on and off the field. In the 80s that was Pete Rose. In 93 that was crazy Lenny Dykstra. In our last major run, it was Jimmy Rollins. In 2022 I would argue it was probably Bryce Harper. But that version of Bryce Harper does not seem to be playing for the Phillies any longer. He seems stoic, preoccupied, distracted, possibly even troubled. I don’t want to criticize because you never know what a guy is going through outside of baseball and who knows maybe there’s something going on. But back to the question of Lynne Door or Turner right now I would take Lindor because he’s more of that type of guy than Turner is and this team needs that type of guy. The closest guy we have to that in my opinion on Athens is Sosa, but you can’t really be that guy as a part-time player

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Agree. I have mentioned a few times that Sosa is really the only energy guy. May add Bader to list but he has been here so recently and most likely gone at end of season. Those were good examples of past leaders when the team had success.

  3. Unless they win it all or come awfully close, this roster has reached its ceiling. Time to blow it up (to an extent) and start over. Work might need to be done in FO as well. The inability to develop an impact bat is absurd.

    Like

    1. I do not disagree. However, Romus and I discussed exactly that a season ago and for the most part the roster is the same. IF they bring JT and Schwarber back most likely it will be close to the same again in 26. Maybe a few of the young kids get sprinkled in as well.

My concerns right now are how this team can become so inept overnight, and all of these playoff scenarios are basically that in duration. Mets had been getting pounded this month and then Phillies come to town, and they score 25 runs in 3 games. BTW the Phillies countered with 8.

      1. When you get punched n the mouth the way the Phils did, you can collect your wits or you can shrug it off. With perhaps the biggest budget to work from, the Mets are more than a bunch of mercenaries purchased on the open part. They have a minor league pipeline pushing talent to the big team. We saw it last night with McLean and likely will see it again soon with Jonah Tong. Their Syracuse AAA team is pretty dominant.

If the Phils were being outspent in free agency to a team with Steve Cohen’s wallet, that’s one thing. But the development of helpful young talent I see as a mainly fair fight and that’s a fight the Phils are not winning. And that’s been the case for 20 years and — with some exceptions — since the inception of the amateur draft and the Latin American amateur signing regime.

yeah the leader/moxy stuff holds some weight.. the team identity is a flounder at the moment and feels that way for awhile. it’s harps team but he never takes it up to the same notch as like rose/dykstra/rollins/utley etc… i know he cares, he plays hard, tries hard… has come up clutch many times but it feels like as everybody takes their cue from him the team just always feels tight.. hasn’t felt light since 22 when they happened into it with low expectations but rest assured they were still there with the money that was being spent then but even more so now.. topper isn’t going to provide the fire, he’s a support guy… need a fire guy… bohm/stott are basically vanilla all day everyday out there… Marsh hasn’t been that crazy wild man lately.. our other rotating cast of OF’s are just as lost on what day they get to play as trying to figure out what time what channel what announcer is calling the game these days

hopefully that bell ringer was a major wake up call.. think the shock of wheeler being gone caught up to them and they got AMAZED again up in nyc

time to put the babies down fellas and get out the rubberbands… time to put the nuts in the dirt

  6. Maybe the bright side of this is that it won’t be easy for them down the stretch and they will have to find some metal in themselves to win the division and be amped up for a deep playoff run.

I’d rather them peak late than early and August is way too early for a team to be playing their best baseball.

    1. yeah for sure, just that with Harp having talked openly about having wanted to get a sweep there in nyc this series.. then they are the ones getting swept… that says a lot in and of it self.. but then you have him doing opposing team colors for his cleats and batting gloves for “rivalry” games or whatever the idea is or if mlb is promoting it at all but it’s been published that he’s doing it as a fun little thing.. then they get their bottoms handed to them…. show some metal is an understatement… need something that rhymes with miss & vinegar coming out of their eyes…

      1. I remember many years ago someone asked on the radio the difference between ARod and Derek Jeter on the Yankees.

The reply….both want to win….but Jeter needs to win…so Jeter steps up as the de facto leader…. though ARod had better numbers, Jeter was their leader, their voice.

Harper , I assume is considered the leader on this team. Leadership styles come in different shapes, but ultimately he is the one that needs to shoulder that responsibility.

      2. I get the power he has but I can’t believe they let him wear the Mets colors out there. That would’ve never happened with the 07-08 group. He himself hasn’t performed well in that stadium and it’s the lowest of the stadiums in the NL East for his career.

They just have such loser energy when they play the Mets. That post season series last year was embarrassing with the excuse making they were doing after they lost Game 1. Then Karen Bohm makes his appearance this year.

        1. Philly fans always find the oddest things to complain about. “Karen” Bohm went 5-11 in the Mets series but somehow his pointing out a glare off a microphone in CF is the issue.

Harper was 5-13 but was the problem because he was trolling the Mets with orange batting gloves and blue spikes.

Meanwhile, Schwarber does nothing, Stott goes hitless, both Sanchez and Luzardo lose their composure on the mound, Duran can’t get an out, but Harper and Bohm are the problem”?

          2. I see it the same way on Bohm. When they play with hitter sight lines, that’s a dealthing. When Mets’ twerpy announcer Gary Cohen was having fun with it for 2 days, I’d love someone set off a smoke bomb in the broadcast booth and see how well he does his job. Met fans proved they could bea-holes about it with no encouragement from the announcers. How’s Topper in the dugout going to recognize the problem — it was for the players to call It out.

            Like

          3. I don’t think anyone on this team should be “trolling” the Mets, let alone the face of the franchise. He didn’t really back it up either with the poor pick off play although he was ok offensively.

My problem with Bohm was the way it went down. The team completely unravels then he hits into a DP (which he’s prone to). If he couldn’t see then he shouldn’t have swung and said something while he was hitting. Like I said there was a lot of excuse making when they lost to them last year and it rubs me the wrong way.

You’re right though, not those two guys fault and outside of that incident Bohm played well offensively. His approach frustrates me so I can be a little harder on him especially when the big bats around him aren’t performing.

Glad they all came out to play today and took out their frustrations. Need to see more but it really seems like the Mets are able to expose all the Phillies weaknesses. Hopefully we get our revenge when they come into CBP.

  7. Let’s not overreact to the sweep. Hopefully they bounce back at home and beat up on the Braves. Sept 1 the roster goes from 26 to 28. My guess is that Rojas will come back because he adds speed and defense. On the pitching side, I think if Painter’s start tonight goes well, he’ll get called up and they’ll go to a 6 man rotation at least for awhile.

    1. Agree with Murray as we have seen this stretch of bad play a couple times this year. The road series against the Pirates and White Sox are excellent examples where they play horribly especially the hitting. They bounced back then but have to avoid this period of lousy play in the playoffs to advance.

  8. MLB Pipeline has a write on Mavis Graves…he could be in line for Paul Owens Phillies Pitcher of the Year Award…Jean Cabrera and Esti Jimenez are also having good seasons. Maybe Painter could be a nominee also, but it has been a roller coaster year in some respects for him.

    https://www.mlb.com/milb/news/each-team-s-hottest-pitching-prospect-august-2025?t=mlb-pipeline-coverage

Phillies: Mavis Graves, LHP (No. 25)The 6-foot-6 Graves made big strides in 2024, and after a few tough outings at Single-A at the start of the year, is really settling in at High-A Jersey Shore as the summer wears on. Graves pitched to a 1.72 ERA over four starts in July, following that up with a 0.92 ERA in four August starts – he’s allowed only two earned runs total in his last seven starts, a stretch of 32 2/3 innings. As such, he’s logged scoreless outings in six of those seven starts, with opponents batting merely .159 against him this month.

      1. I think he still sits in that 92-93T94 range with his 4Smr…..as he gets stronger he should tick that up. Not sure he will ever be a 96+ guy. But with his height and lengthened release point that may not be necessary.

    Phils Magic Numbers…

    • 28 to Win the East
    • 21 to Clinch the 6th Spot / 3rd Wild Card

    With the Schedule –

    • 9 v. Marlins, Twins (7-2)
    • 10 v. Braves, Royals, D-Backs (6-4)
    • 10 v. Brew, Mets, Dodgers (5-5)

Phils go 18-11 / Mets NEED to go 22 – 7 to catch them.

    1. I’m aware of the impression of Philly fans being bandwagon jumpers — on or off the wagon based on the latest outcome.

I have 2 concerns which are ongoing and which I address only occasionally here. First, the Phils are vulnerable to strong left-handed pitching. The record shows it and other teams recognize it. It’s nothing new. The Phils beating up on Cal Quantrill, a very marginal right-handed pitcher in no way assuages that concern. Down the stretch and in the playoffs, should the Phils make the post-season, they can expect opponents to try and exploit this vulnerability.

Second, other contending teams do a better job of infusing young talent onto their rosters. This leads to stronger intra-team competition for playing time and reduces the tendency to rely on aging free agents owed big money on long term deals.

I hope the Phils sweep the Braves and waltz into the post-season. But if the Phils fail to do better against quality pitching, their near term team prospects are bleak. And if the Phils can’t bring in top prospects, then free agency will prove a less helpful tool competing against teams with deeper pockets.

Marlins are no push-overs…..lead MLB in contact, 10th in hits, 4th in triples, and plenty of singles and double guys, not much on HRs however.

  12. Elated as much as anyone on this site about what Schwarber and the team did last night. I would have settled for two HRs last night and the other two coming in New York against the Mets where they were really needed.

As someone wrote in the past couple of days here on Phuture Phillies, the Phillies feast on poor pitching but struggle against the good pitching. Hoping that will change as the season ends.

    1. This should not be news but everyone struggles against good pitching, which is what makes them good pitchers.

This idea that the Phillies are unique in their struggles while everyone else is just pummeling these good starters isn’t backed up by the numbers.

    1. I was thinking last night that the last two games were capsules of the Phillies season. Hoping they do not fall flat in these next 3 games before the Brewer trip. Consistency has not been their biggest friend. But they are home and that has been much kinder for them all season.

I am not sure what Schwarber will get but I do think he stays with the Phillies. Not sure if the Phillies try super hard to keep JT or maybe try to land one of the younger guys on one of the other teams. Just watching most evenings these catchers take such a beating and JT maybe even more than some it is a wonder he is able to move in the mornings.

    1. Rutschman will be traded in the off-season. Are we interested? He’ll cost a good prospect and he’s really taken a big step backwards this year. He is clearly a viable option if they decide to not pay JT who, after his recent hot play, will command a 3 yr deal probably for close to $20M per.

      Like

      1. The cost to trade for him may be a bit high, but it is an interesting thought. My question is how good is he behind the plate with pitch framing, game calling, and defense since that will help the staff greatly. We have a good pitching staff now but JT contributes a lot to that as catcher.

If they want to change to the younger Rutschman they should try to get him early on before JT signs elsewhere.

I think the decision is a win/win either way.

        1. I mentioned yesterday if only 1 of Schwarber or JT, I think it will be Schwarber. Also, I am amazed at the nightly beating these catchers take. I can see the Phillies at least looking around at maybe a younger version. Some have mentioned the kid with the Dodgers. I agree that JT helps the pitching staff quite a bit with his pitch calling, framing, throwing on runners, etc. He is really good.

        2. Adley R is not as young as you may think…turns 28 next season. The plus, he is controlled for two more years. So he may cost in prospect depth, along with maybe a current player on the 26. I am not sure how much they are sold on Jordan Westburg staying at third, but maybe Bohm could be in play for Ruts. along with a prospect.

          Like

      2. I’m not sure if Rutschman will cost a top 100 prospect. His defense is decent but his bat has seriously declined this season. He obviously has the pedigree of a former #1 pick but we’re way removed past that point. I would offer a package around Dante Nori but that’s as far as I would go.

        Like

        1. Nori would be a reasonable trade for him although it might take an additional throw in too. Remember also that pitch framing ability will be rendered useless or at least less important with the new system coming. The Phil’s might surprise me and resign JT but I think the price and the years has gone up and I think I might avoid a long term deal with a 35 yr old catcher. If he’s agreeable to a 2 yr deal to stay, they might keep him but should they??

          1. Also, with only one year remaining in his contract, would the Tigers want to bring Casty back as a veteran presence? Phils would love to chase Tucker but would need the money from Casty and JT to afford it. Even if they resign Schwarber, he won’t cost that much more than he’s getting now, just more years.

The Phillies beat the Braves in 2022 by manufacturing runs, in addition to clutch HR’s. Ever since they have increasingly just tried to hit HRs, but mostly struck out and lost early in the playoffs.

They did, however, rank second in home runs (15 behind 2023) and first in GIDP.

I also noted that the boys are starting to celebrate with water after the games again. Thursday night, Marsh poured a bottle of water politely down Schwarber’s’ back, tonight, Marsh and Stott went after Turner with a large water bucket(?). Harper had put a stop those shenanigans earlier in the season.

  18. Or his wrist was still throbbing after getting plunked 5 minutes earlier; not a Casty fan but I think I would go that direction with the reasoning.

  19. As up and down as the season has been, and a miserable series in NY 72 hours ago, guess which team has the 2nd best record in the sport?

  20. IMO no way Miller goes to AFL, kid has played a ton this season. Nori would be interesting considering how he has really turned it on and is in the Dykstra /Rose makeup where they just want to play every single day.

    1. If you ask Miller if he wants to go ….naturally, he will want to go ….stay tuned. And Nori would be a good candidate….though in the past A ball players were restricted from going, but since they changed the requirements and restrictions on foreign/Latin players, they may have also changed it on lower level players. Clubs could, in theory, load their AFL contingent with younger players who they want to get experience against advanced competition. Will see who the Phillies nominate for the Surprise team when games start in the first week of October.

      1. I think Miller is the perfect AFL candidate. I think Nori probably goes next year. I’d love to see Escobar go this year.

Could have 3 players with over 50 SBs this season as Nori is at 47 , and Crawford is at 49

    Griff Mcgarry with 5 inn., 6 Ks , 1 ER . 2 Bb

    1. It’s been awhile since a crop of Phillies prospects has gotten me this intrigued. Crawford (age 21) is a lock to come into ST looking for the CF job. Nori (soon to be 21) has been ripping JS. I doubt he’ll start 2026 at Reading but we’ll see.

  22. At this point, with Castellanos being unhappy with his reduced playing time, I think it’s a lock that he gets traded this offseason. The Phillies should be able to eat $14M and trade him for an A ball lotto ticket.

Crawford and Marsh are locks for the OF in 2026. Wilson and Rojas should be in the mix. Rincones will get a shot in ST.

    1. Guru. Problem is, and maybe Jim. Can correct me if I am wrong. Crawford isn’t a great center fielder and either is Marsh. They must find a right hand bat.to platoon with Marsh. Crawford can hit left hand pitching. I also be looking for a right hand second baseman . Must find a guy who can hit fourth. Who is a rbi guy.

Tomorrow Phillies at Brewers….Mets at Tigers.

      1. Roll the dice on Buehler…every year out from the 2ndTJ is a another year of healing. In now he is a free agent so maybe ge gives the Philies a few good starts down the stretch and if ge actually signed today, then also into the play-offs.

Wonder who gets DFA’d to make room for Buehler on the 40!

  24. Amazing that if the Phillies can win tonight that after Mets dropping 3 of 4 to Marlins teams would be right where they were last Sunday night. Baseball acts in strange ways.

    1. Mets need to finish 17-8 to get to 90 wins.

Phillies going 12-14 gives them 91. The math is catching up to the Mets quickly.

    2. Don……Phillies next 19 games will be toughies….counting the Marlins now since they seem to get hot against better teams. And the Mets may get to see Skubal in their series…though A’s roughed him up in his last start.

Phillies just need to take care of business and get hot in the last two weeks.

      1. Romus. Skubal pitched today. 1 ER in last 20 innings. Must have made some errors if scroller was right. Dbacks just tied Dodgers at 4. Carrol 3 run HR off of Scott. Yamamoto had blitzed them for 7 innings.

Bueler has not been good but is of for an insurance policy. Scroller said Wheeler put on 60-day IL. Does that open a space.

Also got a Pirate pitcher Mayza off waivers.

3up. I agree if you do the math things get difficult. But as this week has shown baseball is a crazy game.

  26. Well, they gave that one away. I know you can’t win ’em all, but they should have won this one. Nobody could deliver the big hit when it was needed and Kerkering stunk the joint out, as did Alvarado. Both have been struggling of late. And to deny Luzardo of a win was even more of a bummer. Like I wrote, this was one that could’ve, should’ve been won.

  27. 28 strikeout last two games. Realmuto batting fourth is a joke why they won’t try Crawford is crazy. Watching a team that has no chance to win championship.three hitters in the whole lineup. .

  28. I’m gettin a bit tired of Harper’s permanent scowl. I get that you can’t be satisfied until you win a World Series, but it’s not a crime to be happy. The guy should lighten up, take the chip off his shoulder and remember it’s still a game and he’ll get paid the same whether he enjoys or not. I’d love for him to be the one to pour water on a teammate after a big win. I guess I’d keep quiet if he was getting better results, but his hits don’t seem to come when the Phils really need them. He might even hit better with runners in scoring position if he steps up to the plate without looking like he wants to kill somebody.

    1. I really like Harper as I’m sure we all do but his demeanor and attitude seems to be bringing the team down. Also when is the last time he came up with that big hit the Phillies needed ?

  29. Also, if I was Dickerson I would make Harper practice the run down play til it becomes 2nd nature to him…..he’s been horrible @ that the last 2 times.
