The Phillies announced a bunch of transactions today.
Late on the 12th, Lehigh Valley posted the releases of Max Castillo who had just cleared waivers and been outrighted to the IronPigs and Ricardo Pinto.
Castillo had been claimed off waivers back in February. He had made 21 appearances in the majors the past two seasons but didn’t pitch well enough to merit such consideration with the Phillies. Pinto was signed as a free agent in February and was invited to spring training. He pitched well-enough to make the active roster to start the season but pitched his way to a DFA by the end of April.
At close of business Tuesday, the Phillies posted 21 transactions.
They activated RHP Taijuan Walker from the 15-day IL and they optioned RHP Yunior Marte to Lehigh Valley to make room for Walker on the active roster. They also outrighted RHP Nick Nelson who cleared waivers to Lehigh Valley.
RHP Robinson Pina was promoted to Lehigh Valley from Reading, and RHP Jonah Dipoto was transferred to the Development List. RHP Seth Johnson was assigned to Lehigh Valley from Reading.
Pina posted a 12-4 record at Reading with a 3.95 ERA. He struck out 107 in 100 innings and walked just 13. He was signed by the Angels in February 2017. He elected free agency at the end of the 2023 season and the completion of his 7-year UPC agreement. He was signed by the Phillies in December. Johnson was acquired near the trading deadline by the Phillies from Baltimore in the Gregory Soto deal. He was 0-6 with a 2,63 ERA at Bowie (BAL) and 0-1 with a 3.52 ERA at Reading before this assignment.
RHP Moises Chace, LHP Braeden Fausnaught, and SS Zach Arnold were promoted to Reading from Jersey Shore. Reading released C Arturo De Fraitas, placed SS Kendall Simmons on the 7-day IL, and transferred C Andrick Nava to the Development List.
Chace was acquired near the trading deadline by the Phillies from Baltimore in the Gregory Soto deal. He is being promoted after 2 starts for Jersey Shore. He was signed by the Orioles in July of 2019. Fausnaught was signed as a free agent in August 2022. He posted an 8-3 record and 3.65 ERA with Jersey Shore this summer. Arnold was a 14th round draft pick in 2023. He posted good numbers in his first 2 season and has a .256/.660 so far this season. De Freitas was signed in March of 2018. He came stateside in 2021 but never really hit posting a career .210/.609.
SS Diego Gonzalez and RHP Ethan Chenault were promoted to Jersey Shore from Clearwater. Jersey Shore activated RHP Alex Garbrick from the 60-day IL.
Chenault was an 18th round draft pick in 2023. The Phillies didn’t pitch him at all last season. He posted a 1-3 record as a reliever this season with a 4.01 ERA and 53 strikeouts in 36.2 innings. Gonzalez was signed in July of 2019. He didn’t play until 2021 after COVID. He played in Rookie ball for 3 seasons before being promoted to Clearwater where he posted a .265/.756.
Clearwater placed OF Raylin Heredia on the 60-day IL. OF Dante Nori, OF Griffin Burkholder, C Kodey Shojinaga, OF Joel Dragoo, and SS Raider Tello were assigned to Clearwater.
Nori and Burkholder were the Phillies first 2 picks in the 2024 draft. Both were selected out of high school. Shojinaga was their 6th round pick, Dragoo was their 7th round pick, and Tello was a UDFA.

Thanks Jim.
FYI – Seth Johnson to Lehigh Valley obviously. It’s nice to see our two new pitchers get promoted quickly and exciting to see CWater as basically our draft team.

I questioned it when I read the transaction. I questioned it when he showed up on the BlueClaws web page. I questioned it when his MiLB page was updated. But went with it initially. However, I have another source that shows Johnson with Lehigh Valley. Plus, the local beat writer announced that he was promoted there. So, I went with what makes sense and corrected the article and my files. Thank you, MLB, for the extra work correcting your mistake.

The updated MLB Pipeline is out.
As expected, Abel is out of the top 100. Aidan Miller is now the top ranked Phillie, ahead of Painter.
The Phillies first 4 draft picks of this year are in the top 30.

Wow, Guru, am I (likely)reading this wrong, or is that pretty amazing? As a kind of metric, how many other draft picks from this year besides the four from the Phillies are in the MLB pipeline top 100’s top 30?

I meant the top 30 of the Phillies. None of the Phillies 2024 draft picks are in the top 100. In general, only about 15 first round picks will go into the Pipeline top 100.

I was at the game last night…man was that bad. I am not concerned about the outcome of the 2024 season, but they really played with no energy last night. No passion. Mash is completely lost at the plate. His body language in the OF was poor. He looks lost. Realmuto’s poor throwing and Trea’s error we just awful examples of losing focus. Bohm was the only one who had quality ABs.
The Phillies’ problems are 100% between their ears.

Kinda similar to the Eagles collapse last year. Hopefully Phillies can right their issues in time.
