Two Minor Leaguers Released

The Phillies announced the release of two minor league players yesterday.

Lehigh Valley released 3B Nick Podkul and LHP Taylor Lehman.

Podkul was originally drafted out of Notre Dame by Toronto in the 7th round of the 2018 draft.  He made it as far as Triple-A Buffalo before being released in August 2022.  He was signed by the Phillies to a minor league contract as a free agent in December 2022.  He was assigned to Reading for the 2023 season and promoted to Lehigh Valley mid-season.  He posted good numbers at both stops.  He was not as successful this season.

Lehman was drafted by Miami out of high school in the 34th round of the 2014 draft.  He opted to attend college at Penn State.  He went unselected in the 2018 draft and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Phillies in June 2018.  He posted good metrics as he moved through the system.  This season completes his 7-year commitment.  He would be a free agent at the end of this season anyway.

  1. Feel bad for Nick Podkul, he seemed to be doing well until he got hit in the face last year. Dealing with facial fractures and the 6 months of recovery, and mental aspects of the incident most likely had something to do with his performance. The game isn’t always fair and neither is life.
