Four Phillies 2024 Draft picks were assigned to Clearwater today. The transactions posted in late afternoon around 5:00 PM. Their addition should help a Threshers’ squad that has struggled since winning the first half and seen several prospects promoted.
The players are picks three thru five and ten – #3 and 100th overall pick shortstop John Spikerman a 4YR JR, #4 and 130th overall pick shortstop Carson De Martini 4YR JR, #5 and 162nd overall pick outfielder Carter Mathison a 4YR JR, and #10 and 312th overall pick infielder Brady Day a 4YR SR.
I’ve watched several workouts this week and would expect all four to make positive contributions to the Threshers. De Martini stood out during infield drills for his incredibly quick transfer and release on throws from shortstop and third base to second and first.
The Phillies Made 20 selections in the Rule 4 Draft and signed 19 of those picks. RHP Jared Spencer from Indiana State, their 14th round pick, opted to use the transfer portal and play for Texas next season. The signing deadline was 5:00 PM today. The Phillies have also signed six undrafted free agents.
The Phillies bonus pool was $7,381,800, the allowed 5% overage made it $7,750,890. They spent $7,704,900 leaving just $45,990 on the table.
The Phillies first game in the Florida Bridge League is scheduled for tomorrow. Drafted position players still at the Complex will likely get their reps there. It is unlikely that drafted pitchers see much action. Infielder Nikau Pouaka-Grego was reassigned to the FCL Phillies and could see FBL action.
With the signing of UDFA RHP Ryan Dromboskie today, the 2024 Draft Tracker has been updated with all signing dates for all players and bonuses for all but the UDFAs.
Jim….will be interested in seeing your reports on the new guys in this new Bridge League action.

Grego was a low risk potentially high reward guy. Shame he falls into the abyss that most of those guys do.
Like the rest of us I’m always looking for that sleeper that seems to come from no where to make his mark in the league.

DMAR…looking forward to Jim’s analysis of the DSL prospects…specifically the 17-year olds on the Red and White teams that have shined this summer. That may give us a clue on the ‘sleeper’ guys.

I’ve tried watching their home games, but I can’t really follow without audio. The best guys have already been brought stateside. Steve will get better information than I can provide.

What does the transfer portal mean?

College Athletes can now move at will to other schools and get paid to do it…
All they have to do is put their name into the Portal which is nothing more than a system that says you’re available to any school that wants to make you an offer

One of my best friends his son just did this after spending 2 seasons at a school in SC Winthrop.
Its really strange. While the school may not be able to pay them the boosters can…
They were telling me during the process that he had an offer from Penn State but it was contingent on another kid who they were offering $100K to come. That kid eventually took the $100K so my friends son had to move on to another offer.
Crazy….

JShore was on the YES network last night. Got to see Miller’s ABs. Saw him flinch on a really mediocre curve ball. Not a good sign. Hoping for the best, though.
