  1. going to have a hard time including Caba or Tait in a trade unless it’s a controllable young hitter or pitcher

          1. Abel’s value was related more to his potential as a former #1 pick. Caba is touted more because he signed for $3.5 million. Baseball people know Tait but I still feel that his trade value will only continue to rise because he was a complete unknown 18 months ago.

            1. My point is you never know on a prospect until they get to the majors. But fans always think it’s going to work out perfectly. It rarely does. Tait couldn’t hit LHP in rookie ball. What if next year he still can’t hit LHP in a larger sample. If that’s the case, he is a backup catcher. You never know

            2. Never thought about this before….as Tait is a catcher and bats lefthanded….that is a rare combination in the majors…..a majority of all catchers hit right handed and many of those who bat from the left side are switch hitters. I find that odd. Stubbs is pretty unique. But agree about Tait….he will need to increase his overall hitting vs LHPs to increase his value as he goes up the ladder.

            3. I doubt that Tait was a complete unknown 18 months ago. Even if true he was a known commodity 12 months ago. He was certainly one of the 2-3 position players that scouts came to see this summer at the Complex, Caba and maybe Escobar the other 1-2 players.

            4. If Tait was so well thought of 18 months ago, why did he sign for only $90,000? Baseball development is non-linear. I’m not saying Tait will turn into an all star. I just believe his value will be exponentially higher in 1-2 years. Knowing which players to trade and which ones not to are why/how GMs win titles or get fired. I’ve followed this site since 2004 and the disastrous Anthony Hewett selection. I rarely post, but please do not categorize me as someone who thinks in absolutes.

    1. I get it, we all like these guys, but we cant go into the deadline attached to everyone; painter, miller, caba, tait, crawford, and expect to get anything back. Its the way of the world. I would agree that if they are to be included it should be for a guy who is not just a rental. A rental reliever should cost something like Jean Cabrera.

    1. Yeah, he figured out how to throw harder (seriously). For the first that I’ve seen since last year, he held 95-96 MPH velocity later into a game, so it looks like we don’t have a Spencer Howard issue for now. Physically, he wasn’t at all right earlier in the year. He still needs to work a lot on his control and command, but his physical rebound is encouraging. My sense of this, however, is if he can get through this year healthy and throwing hard, this experience will either ruin him or turn him around. I’m hoping for the latter. Lots of really great pitchers had years where they bombed in the minors or majors -it happens.

  2. Pipkin continues getting lots of outs. How hard is he throwing? He has the look of a future major league reliever.
I agree that Tait must look very good to any team the Phils are talking to. Aldegheri and Rincones must look good too for being closer to the majors.

  3. I don’t see them trading Tait. Other than Marchan, who is already 25 and pretty much a major leaguer, there isn’t another catcher in the system that looks like a future starting caliber catcher or even a decent backup. Trading a 17 year old catcher doing what Tait is doing would be nuts. He’s 22 months younger than Nori.

If Tait never makes it then he never makes it but he will do great things or not for the Phillies.

    1. I don’t see how people are largely overlooking Tait. What he is doing as a 17 year-old is astonishing. I’m not saying he will be a star, but star players have 17 year-old season like the one Tait is having now.

And, by the way, while we are on catchers, people are also largely overlooking Marchan. My sense is that he is, or is pretty close to being, a first division regular right now. He’s a very good player and he needs to be the back-up next year to see if I he can slot in as the starter in 2025. If I’m the Phillies, I’m tentative penciling him in as a the starter in 2025 as I believe he’s at least a 3 WAR player right now.

      1. I doubt anyone is “overlooking” Tait. Everyone knows that he is good (although he seems to struggle to hit LHP). The key point is that you have to trade good prospects to get good MLB players. All signs point to DD shopping for a good MLB closer and a RH OF’er. You aren’t getting those without giving up a high upside prospect package.

        1. Fair enough – I just feel that, when we discuss prospects here, people don’t quite give Tait credit for what he is doing at his age – it’s exceptional.

Yes, they are going to have to give up some talent to get talent – I’m prepared for it to be a little painful. I know Crawford is talented, but, again, I don’t see him as a star, so he’s the high profile guy I would be okay with them moving. Other than that, Painter, I think is entirely untouchable, Miller is mostly untouchable, and I think they will try hard not to move Caba or Tait – everyone else is pretty much in play, including Klassen and Abel. In fact, Abel’s recent velocity rebound definitely helps his prospect value.

          1. Another guy who lurks in the background is Pan. He throws extremely hard and has a bright future ahead of him. I think they are trying to hide him a little bit so trade demand for him is not so high.

          2. Catch …….. there are no untouchables, Eliot Ness and his Minions were the last …….. everyone has a price tag on them …… pony up, you get the guy/s.

            1. Yes, there are. Anyway, I cannot imagine a trade including Painter. I am fairly confident he is off the table – AND HE SHOULD BE!

            2. Ultimately, nobody for sure knows how good Tait will be. He could never advance past Reading or he could max out at 19-20 or he could be a left handed version of fellow Panamanian Manny Sanguillen. I’m not taking a chance with a trade.

The Phillies FINALLY have a real farm system with potential star quality players. I’m not willing to gut it. We can all remember the days when the Phillies top prospects wouldn’t make the top 25 today.

              Like

            3. I’m fairly confident no other team has inquired about Painter. Not without knowing how he is responding to his rehab. The Phillies are extremely careful having all of his throwing sessions out of the public eye on the Seven Mounds or in the stadium. They’ve even taken to having other rehabbing pitchers throw inside the stadium even so far as moving a couple FCL games in there. No team is going to want to trade value for a TJ pitcher without knowing something about his health and recovery.

              Like

        1. Totally agree! He’s a better hitter than Chooch was at this stage of their development. Marchan is really good.

  4. Romus to answer your question on the 7/23 thread no not trading Crawford for Robert. Rojas + Abel hmmmm….

    I might do that…

Sadly some guys in the BP not getting it done lately may move DD to push the panic button.

    1. DMAR……..IMO, think Dombrow is looking at Sox Robert and maybe Brebbie as the reliever….he is a rental…..Crawford, McGarry and Saltiban probably get it done.

      1. I don’t think that would be nearly if enough – the offer would probably include a better pitcher and another top 10 prospect – probably someone like Caba. If they get that offer, they should jump on it.

  5. Lets say you are the Phillies GM and are on the phone with Tampa. What is the most you’d be willing to give up for an Arozerna/Fairbanks package? Would Crawford and a guy like Mavis Graves be too much? Not enough?

I think we all have to accept that were going to have to part with some of the guys we like a lot if we want to put the big league club in position to win a title. I know im in the minority but Id put Painter in a package if it got us both Robert and Crochet. Painter/Rojas/Klassen for Robert and Crochet…I think Im pulling that trigger

    Like

      1. Agreed – if I’m the Sox, why do I want Rojas? He’s not a guy you rebuild around. He’s the fielding piece on an already good offensive team. He has little utility to the Sox. The Sox would want guys who project as mid to top rotation starters and first division regulars – Crawford, Klassen, Aldegheri, Caba, Tait, maybe even Rincones – that’s the type of guy they would probably want.

      2. I mean if you are getting painter, klassen and a 23 year old with a year of mlb experience whos already elite defensively, i think thats a pretty decent offer. If youre saying that theyd want crawford as well as painter then yeah, not happening

        Like

        1. Yes agree Painter and Klassen are two of the better pitching prospects…..but they need a close to Robert bat in CF or maybe in a corner, like a Rincones. Virtually every org has two maybe three better than adequate defensive CFers in their farm systems. I really not sure how much of a selling point that is anymore…what Jackie Bradley or Kevin Kiermaeir ever bring back in trade.

  6. Also, please stop with the “they don’t need a star, they just need Lane Thomas” stuff. I am fine to acquire him to platoon with Marsh, but that cant be THE move. Half of a LF platoon isnt taking this team over the top.

  7. One thing we know is that Dombrowski loves high velo relievers. I would not be surprised to see him go after Miller. Yes, Miller may get hurt at some point, but if he’s the difference this year . . . Flags fly forever.

    1. You know what really felt like forever? 2012-2021. I have no desire to live through that again. Yes, they need to push some chips in to the middle of the table – but not all of them.

      1. Respectfully disagree. Id gladly have a lackluster 2027-2034 if we get at least one title in the last few years. Do you want to always be the team in the playoffs but no championship? Id rather be the opposite. Although even if they do trade some prospects i trust the front office now to find ways to keep the team competitive more than i trusted that group.

And yeah, i dont think theres any world where they push ALL their chips in the middle. But some may be necessary. Id only want miller if he came with Rooker, and then were talking Painter/Crawford/Tait/high upside teenager. And you know what, I think I do that.

        1. I never said I want them to only be in the playoffs but not get a championship – you did. I’m not selling out the future entirely the way you suggest, however. They did this consistently from 2009-2011 – where are the Championship rings from those years? They sold the farm, no championships, and we all paid the price FOR A DECADE. No thanks.

          1. Fair, but i would argue that the Howard extension and refusing to move on from declining vets combined with terrible drafting and international work and poor free agent choices are the main reasons they were not good for that decade. Think about it, the guys they “sold the farm” with…none of them really became huge difference makers in the bigs. Of all the guys they traded for Lee, Roy, Oswalt, Pence and Lidge, only Bourn, Happ and D’arnaud (maybe Villar) were decent MLB players and none were true stars. Heck, the guy they gave up for David Robertson last year may end up being better than everyone they gave up for those guys combined lol.

Just think that the reason they had that really bad decade wasnt because they sold the farm its because they had a lot of FO incompetence

            1. Those prospects that the Phillies traded got them those players. What happens afterwards (whether they succeeded or not) is irrelevant to the Phillies.

The Phillies emptied their farm system (the Pence trade was unnecessary in my opinion) to lengthen their window and it failed. And we had to pay the price for the next decade.

            2. You both make valid points. When Ronald Acuna, Jr. was 17 his stats did not match up to Tait’s. The Braves were also in a prime contender window (it seems like they always are). Would the Braves have won a WS a couple of years later had they traded Acuna for an “all in” shot? If we ever want to get our own version of such a player, we have to hold on to the ones with potential to be that. Sure- there are long odds against any given player achieving so much, but once they’re traded the odds of achieving it with the Phillies are zero.

            3. You don’t have to go outside of the organization. What would have happened to this team if they had sold Hamels or Utley when they were in the minors? No 2008 WS – that’s what would have happened. I am not the biggest Ed Wade fan, but he refused to trade Utley, even though he was greatly in demand and it might have meant the Phillies making the playoffs. As a prospect, Painter could easily be at the level of a Hamels or Utley – he is an elite prospect – a pitcher you get once every 15 to 25 years or so.

            4. They also refused to trade Dom Brown. Its hit and miss. If you trade a guy and win a title, i dont care if that guy is an all star for another team in 5-6 years

            5. The irony of Acuna and the Braves is that he got hurt on July 10th with the Braves 44-44 and they went on to win the division 15 games over .500 and the series without him.

  8. Guys, Painter and Miller aren’t getting traded. No chance. They’re also not trading Rojas because he has no trade value. Also, the idea that Abel and Rincones gets us something good is silly. Every team sees Abel as a bust so far. They’d take him as a 3rd piece in a deal, but not as a headliner. Crawford plus Tait and Caba are the possible headliners in any deal so I expect at least one of the three to be moved along with an Aldegheri or Klassen and a Bergolla type. This assumes it’s not for a rental. That would lower the cost.
