  1. Just want to bring up a thought. I realize that the Phillies, like most teams today, use AAA as a taxi squad for the MLB team. It seems to me that many on the LHV roster, particularly pitchers, have no chance to contribute to the big league team no matter how desperate things get. Wouldn’t it be a better idea to keep a smaller cadre of AAAA type pitchers- 5 or 6- and use the rest of the slots for prospects or at least semi-prospects in AA who need to show that they either swim or sink against the top level of minor league ball, in order to determine whether they may contribute to the big team if the need arises?

    1. Not sure I understand the question. If the prospect at AA is good enough, he’ll get promoted to AAA. So you’re saying that you want more prospects at AAA, even if they haven’t proved it in AA?

For example, you want Matt Osterberg (who’s been dreadful at AA) to be at AAA?

      1. Was thinking of guys more like Andrew Schultz, who, at this stage, either they make it or we dump them- especially in view of the domestic roster limits.

        1. If the player is good enough, he’ll be kept. The minors are full of filler. I remember somebody mentioned that the Phillies should cut Baron Radcliffe and they did.

As for Andrew Schultz, he’s turning 27 at the end of this month and his career minor league walk rate is 6.4. He still has a walk rate of 4.3 at Reading.

Michael Mercado’s minor league walk rate is 3.5 and he got destroyed in the bigs. The odds of Andrew Schultz making it are slim to none. I wouldn’t be concerned about Andrew Schultz…

  2. Crawford adjusting well is an understatement….

Casey Steward, big man is looking good, 1.16 ERA at JS in 4 starts since moving up…

    1. My guess is that Crawford is probably seeing a lot of fastballs and can hit them. But a good start is certainly encouraging.

    2. Casey Steward’s SO rate is decent and he’s limiting his walks. His hits/9 is not sustainable, but so far so good.

    3. I saw Steward when I went out to see them early in the month. His stuff is good not great. His command is solid but I think I’ll hold off getting excited about him until he reaches the higher levels.

He’s not exactly old for Hi A but he is older…

  3. Keaton Anthony is a fun story. UDFA from Iowa. Kid absolutely raked in college. No idea why he wasn’t drafted. His junior season in Big10 he hit .389 .505/.701/1.206. He didn’t have many homers as a first baseman so maybe lack of power was the concern? But the kid can hit. He has a low K rate and a good walk rate. He is moving his way up the minors. I love stories like this. It is still very early to project anything. But a fun story to watch. I am pulling for him.

    1. Keaton Anthony had gambling allegations at Iowa.

He’s a 1B/DH so he’ll need to continue to rake if he wants to make it to the bigs.

        1. Alleged.

As far as I can tell from reports I’ve read, he was not among the 17 players from Iowa and Iowa State who were charged. Almost all were charged with underage gambling with other charges dropped in the cases that have been settled so far. It’s a misdemeanor with a $645 fine. Some have returned to their sport. It looks like only one of the 4 baseball players suspended by Iowa was charged, and it wasn’t Anthony.

  4. I’m not trading Crawford I hope DD isn’t either. The big club is going to get old fast and expensive.

      1. Romus – if DD goes after the big fish I think it is almost certain to be Crawford + others for Robert and my guess is that is what Chisox would want to replace Robert, among other players.

        1. Yes……I am sure the WSox will also want a quality prospect pitcher also…seems all GMs want a pitcher in any deal. DD may want a reliever from them also….possibly John Brebbia….have to see what happens.

  5. From all that I’ve read (everywhere) it seems Miller and Painter are the true only untouchables that the team will not trade for the “all in” mentality. If I had to guess, Caba might be the next to keep.

  6. A Mick Abel sighting!

    5 IP – 4 H – 1 ER – 1 BB – 5 K

downside is 84 pitches with 50 strikes … hopefully something to build on.
