  1. Any reason given for Ruben Cardenas ‘release’ He carried the Pigs for a couple of weeks.

What’s your opinion of Keaton Anthony? He has ‘torn-up’ both levels of A ball

    1. It was mentioned in a previous post that Cardenas signed with the KBO.

Keaton Antony turned 23 last month and he’s at High-A so he’s not too old for the level. He’s a 1B/DH so he’ll need to continue to rake to get promoted. He should probably be promoted to Reading, but Carson Taylor (another 1B/DH) is hitting well there.

      1. And before you ask why 25 year old Carson Taylor is still at Reading, that’s because soon to be 29 year old Darick Hall (yet another 1B/DH) is at Lehigh.

    2. IMO, Keaton Anthony is legit…he tore up his last two years in the Big Ten….however MLB teams avoided him because of the gambling accusations at Iowa. He could really be a diamond in the rough.

      1. Hmm, the lack of HRs is a concern, he ony hit 4 this year. Darick Hall hit 9 as a 20 year old and then the following season hit 29.

        1. I think they will try Anthony in LF at some point…he did play some OF at Iowa. If I were him I would ask to give it a go.

Phillies org, from parent club down thru A level, do have their fair share of 1B/DH type players….and if they just happen to draft Tommy White out of LSU on Sunday, add another to the list.

          1. Even if Anthony was moved to a corner OF spot, he needs to hit more than 4 HR. On the other hand, he’s walking a ton, his OBP is off the charts.

            1. I’m loving Keaton Anthony and also Otto Kemp – two really good undrafted free agents. Anthony is hitting and is an on base machine. I wouldn’t worry about the power yet at all – when he settled in at Clearwater he finally started to hit homers. The important thing is that he’s showing a really good hit tool and elite plate discipline – which is huge. And, again, Otto Kemp has also had a great year. He’s only hitting about .260 at Reading, but with an OPS over .900 and he’s already jumped two levels. Yes, Anthony is the more impressive of the two right now, but Kemp has done very well too.

  2. Omg, Abel is a mess. Disaster season for him. Not only can he not throw strikes, he lost velocity in the 3rd inning. Emotionally he must be a wreck. Baseball is such a hard game. Hopefully he grows from this but at this point I honestly think the best thing to do is remove him from LV and put him in the pitching lab.

    1. You mentioned about month ago about perhaps something is going on with his arm…..wonder if they did any imaging to see if the UCL is still 100% in tacked. I would think that would have been something they would have done by now. ..his last 15 starts, Game Scores under 50 eleven times, and 4 games between 50 and 53.

    2. Whatever Abel is working on, it’s just not translating into results. I would rather they remove him from the rotation and insert him into the bullpen and let him air it out there. He needs to see some measure of success. This season has to be mentally draining.

    3. I think, sometimes, pitchers really need to rest up and heal their joints and ligaments to regain feel and velocity. He was sick I believe and perhaps he tried to do too much too soon to get back on track and he just wasn’t right.

Abel needs to get away from competition, go to a lab, get rest and start next year anew. If worse comes to worse they can make him a reliever – lots of guys have saved their careers that way (hello Jeff Hoffman and Andrew Miller). But saying he’s our 12th best prospect right now – yes, that sounds about right.

      1. There are three potential outcomes for Abel:
        1. If nothing changes, he is a non-prospect.
        2. If he fixes his command but doesn’t improve his ability to maintain velocity past 3 innings, then he is a back end reliever.
        3. If he fixes his command and also fixes his ability to maintain his 95+ velo then he is a starting pitcher.

my guess on probability of those three outcomes is not encouraging. I would guess 50%, 40%, 10%.

        1. Man, 50 percent is rough! You may be right, but wow – sobering.

Anyway, I tend to think he’s going to figure things out enough to have a major league career, but it is going to be like Spencer Howard’s major league career (the parallels are there) or is he going to figure things out and have staying power? Who knows?

          1. Catch …….. I think you hit it earlier ………….. I think if he’s not hurting physically …….. by now he is mentally and they need to at least pause and give the guy a mental health check before regrouping and pressing forward.

          2. He has a negative WAR. He literally makes it harder for us to win than a street free agent would. It is a negative value contract.
