Bleacher report has Phillies with 10th ranked farm system

I believe BR was somewhat generous on the 10th place Phillies’ ranking. I am not entirely familiar with many teams’ prospects that are ranked in the mid-to-late teens, but just assumed the Phillies would fall in around 15th position. I would like to compare the MLB.com and Fangraphs mid season rankings vs BR’s when they come out.

I agree, a 10th ranking is generous at this point. There’s a lot of projection here since Painter is still rehabbing and most of the their top 10 are in JS or further out.
I think next season will be a more definitive ranking with Painter and Rincones hopefully healthy and Caba/Tait/Crawford/Aldegheri likely getting promoted later this season.

What the heck did they find in Ruben Cardenas?

Outfield depth.
I know that sounds cold. But, that’s probably the most accurate description of the acquisition and his future in the organization.
When Marsh went on the IL and they called up Dahl, the Phillies saw a very real possibility that if they later DFA-ed Dahl that he would be claimed off waivers.
The next man up was likely either Luplow or Muzziotti. So, the Phillies went and acquired a AAAA outfielder who was having a good season in Durham (Tampa) as insurance. Both Luplow and Muzziotti are on the IL now, Luplow for the rest of the season. So, good move to get out ahead of the anticipated possible need.
And, credit to Tampa for not standing in the way of Cardenas and the possibility of a major league callup. They, like the Phillies in a lot of cases, traded the player for just cash considerations which in these trades is usually a nominal amount, usually a dollar.

Not harsh or cold at all, mate. Fair answer. If he keeps raking though he may find himself getting his ML debut at some point.
Its funny bc I actually think they could do the same kind of good deed for Muzziotti, who really is what he is and could probably be a 5th outfielder for someone.

Yeah, I like Muzziotti. He’s a good defensive centerfielder, but lost traction in the organization when Rojas passed him on the depth chart. The acquisition of Marsh and Pache didn’t help matters. Unless the Phillies bring in someone from outside the organization, Muzziotti will likely serve as depth next year, too. The only outfielder who needs Rule 5 protection at the next lower level is Ethan Wilson. I can’t see the Phillies needing to use a 40-man roster spot to protect him from the draft.

Aroon Escobar hurt? Hasn’t played since 6/8

Yes. PhilPhan posted this in answer to the same question several days ago.
Aroon is nursing an injury which hasn’t been significant enough to place him on the IL. He continues to be day to day.

Klassen’s slider looks nasty. Plus slider with a plus, plus fastball is a heck of a combo.
