  1. Marcus Lee Sang is an overlooked prospect. He’s up to 284 after hitting 197 in April by hitting 317 in May and well over 350 in June. He can play all three OF spots too.

  2. Hitting very well this season off his year long suspension is Ricardo Perez….he signed for $1.2M in Jan ’21 and showed off a strong hit tool (. 349 BA, .786 OPS, 14 K%) in 30 FCL games in 2022. The unfortunate circumstance for him now, though still only 20-years old, is the fact he may not have his natural position as a catcher readily available in the Phillies’ org anymore. If it were up to me, I would showcase him as much as possible from the plate……and perhaps include him as a added value player in a package deal.  Of course doing that you can be a little wary…. do not want the same thing happening to the Phillies as it did with the White Sox when they included youngster Tatis in their trade for James Shields way back when with the Padres.

    1. Yes! Romus, who would you pick in the Phillies org to replace Realmuto, when it is time, and when would you think that time is?

      1. To tell you the truth…..Caleb Ricketts may be the one……I really would like to see Jordan Dissin start to turn it around at the plate. But in reality he would just be a place setter for someone like E. Tait if he continues….same with Ricketts. Tait is at least 4 years away and I hope he is not rushed…..some clubs are rushing their Latin catching prospects and they seem to have plateaued ….like the Nats (Ruiz) and Mets (Alvarez) two Latin premier prospects a few years ago.

        1. Not sure why you’re saying that both Ruiz and Alvarez were rushed, they both spent at least 5 years in the minors with at least .800+ OPS. As I just mentioned, most prospects fail so seeing some of them not make it is not a surprise.

I do agree that Caleb Ricketts will be part of the solution at catcher once JT’s contract is up. We’ll see if he’s more than a backup. I just hope that the Phillies don’t extend JT. Catchers don’t age well into their mid-30s.

          1. Alvarez made his MLB debut at 20 years old…all of approx 250 minor league games under his belt before his debut-with that 2020 lost season due to the pandemic-…I am not sure how many years that equates to but right now he appears to be struggling.

Ruiz…..I can see the LAD did bring him along a little slower…..over 375 games in the minors.

But we are talking catchers…not normal position players….obviously there is more of a learning curve to the defensive side…physically and mentally, along with the language barriers that arise.

IMO the teams rushed them to the majors.

            1. Francisco Alvarez signed for $2.7M with the Mets as a 16 year old. By his second year in the system, he was already a top 100 prospect. His OPS by age in the minors:

              17: .916 OPS

              18: covid

              19: .941

20: .885 -> He made his ML debut.

21: 1.056 -> Played in 123 games for the Mets

He clearly was able to accept his promotions, adjust, and still hit. How could you say he was rushed? We would kill to see Tait have this sort of performance in the minors.

            2. How is he doing offensively now?

It is not years…but games behind the plate that a player gains the necessary experience. And where they build confidence in handling pitchers and their own defensive posture. Phillies did it right with Logan O’Hoppe…an unheralded draft pick….over 330 games, maybe not all catching but the bulk were….just in the Philly org….Angels added a few more games. He was ready and any worries of his defensive game did not carry over to the offensive side of his game.

Hey we have different views on it. I prefer to keep catchers down a little longer in the minors.

            3. On what (in my mind, anyway) might be a related topic – relating to defensive skills that might not make it into official stats…. did anyone see Orion K’s wild pitch last night, and have an opinion if Realmuto would have fielded it?

    2. Nobody knows what kind of player Perez will be in 3 years time, let alone next year. The fact is, most prospects fail, especially those who are not ranked. If you think Perez can help get you something you need right now, you do it. Whatever happens after that, it’s out of the Phillies’ hands.

  3. I(Heart)PP, In Matt Gelb’s Athletic article, Kerkering is quoted saying he couldn’t hear the pitch call through his earpiece because the crowd was so loud. All he heard was “ball” although a slider was called for and expected.

Whether Realmuto would have caught it is moot since he is on the injured list. Whether Stubbs would have had it is a pertinent question since he could have started the game. When I first saw the play in real time, I thought it should have been caught. On replay, I could see that Marchan set up inside and low. As we all saw, the pitch was higher and away. I don’t fault Marchan, especially after Kerkering’s post game statement. I also don’t think that Stubbs (or Realmuto) could have caught it.

Now, on the tag, I think a more experienced catcher would have brought his glove over between the hand and the plate rather than try and tag on the arm. But, in real time, it’s hard to find fault with Marchan. However, Realmuto and Stubbs are taller. Realmuto’s 4 inches would certainly have made a difference. Maybe even Stubbs’ one inch.
