  1. Last 20 games…82 PAs, William Bergolla has been red hot…..a slash line of .394/.450/.549. Maybe he has turned the corner and will exhibit  top prospect traits and the results going forward.

    1. I was a little skeptical of Bergolla, so I took a look at his stats and overall profile. His monthly splits have been really encouraging, with May a lot better than April and June (so far) much better than May. Also, he is only 19 and is in high A ball – that alone is very significant.

If he can develop any type of power at all (a typical problem with Sal Agostinelli prospects), he becomes very interesting.

  2. Mercado’s start was also encouraging. He gave up 2 runs in the first inning and then shut down the other side the rest of the way. It was impressive because he didn’t have his good fastball. He usually sits 94-96, touching 97. Today he was sitting more like 93-94, but he hung in there and recovered nicely after an uncertain start to the game.

    1. Agreed. One of the best things that has happened recently is the Phillies moving to more powerful young players across the board – guys who you can, in your mind, see taking major league at bats. It’s been a favorable development and I believe it’s VERY intentional. No more Carlos Toccis!!!!

  3. Not sure why they moved Mercado to the rotation this year. Long term, fine, but if hes gonna have an impact in the bigs in 2024 youd have to think it would have been as a reliever

    1. Last year I believe the Phillies used 9 SP’s. Right now you would have to say they have him slotted as SP#7, the next to be called upon if Turnball is already replacing someone. For awhile I thought it might be Buchanan, but I think it is Mercado.

      1. Yeah and I dont even hate it as their long term plan for him. But for this year, he could give them a 2nd half bullpen spark and potentially make a postseason roster that way. Id have begun the transition to starter this offseason

    2. I agree, Mercado looked great out of the bullpen in ST. Obviously starters have more value than relievers so I get why the Phillies made the move in the first place. But his SO rate has plummeted as a starter and his walk rate only got marginally better.

  4. This isnt pertaining to last night at all, but Max Lazar with another save for Lehigh. They may have something in him.

    1. His stats are right from a video game!

      Combined AA/AAA

      0.39 ERA / 23.1 IP / 8 H / 3 BB / 31 K / .105 avg against / 0.47 WHIP

      Career stats are not bad

      3.22 ERA / 299 IP / 275 H / 65 BB / 318 K / .241 avg against / 1.14 WHIP

      1. His velo is not the highest for a RHP reliever but the results are very efficient. ….BrewerFanatic:  “…2023, his fastball is sitting in the 92-95 range and spinning at 2500+ RPM. Coming from an extremely over the top slot that is somewhat reminiscent of Oliver Drake, it gets a ton of ride and plays very well at the top of the zone. With the jump in velocity it has turned into a much bigger swing and miss pitch for him. His changeup is still his best secondary, but his breaking ball has improved as well. It may not be as a starter anymore, but Lazar has been regaining some of his prospect luster.”

        1. great stuff. hes playing himself into being the next guy up if theres an injury. Is Yunior Marte still on rehab or is he now just in AAA for now?

    2. hmmm . . .

Not sure what he’s doing/throwing to make that happen. FB is like 93-94. I wonder if he’s developed an out pitch.

      1. I think we need to be asking more important questions. Like, is it pronounced “Laser” or “La-zar” God I hope its Laser

      2. A good spin rate for a 93 mph fastball is typically around 2200 RPM. Given that’s the MLB average from 2022 anyways……his is around that 2500 mark, which would indicate he does spin it a lot better than the average pitcher….is it possible to increase one’s spin rate with practice?

These were his Brewer ratings from 3 years ago. So it looks like his out pitch must be his change-up.
