    1. He’s finally up to 270 with power. They’ll give him a little more time to enjoy this run but I agree he could finally get to leave Clearwater soon.

      1. Even though Viars is still only 20, he’s played in 125 games at Clearwater already. Just on that alone, he should be moving up.

  1. With Marsh’s injury, the Phils have to decide between Wilson, on the 40, and Dahl who has truly earned it but not on the 40. If it’s not Dahl now, I’m not sure how you keep him.

    1. I see Kolby Allard and Max Castillo on the 40 Man Roster. A quick look at their stats shows terrible numbers. Not sure why either of these guys couldn’t be replaced with Dahl if they choose to call him up. Seem like he’s the guy who’s earned the promotion.

      1. Andy………trust me you don’t need a Master’s or a Doctorate to cull out our 40 man roster, in fact if you have to spend more than 10 minutes you are wasting time.

    2. Before Soto started using the slide step all the time, he was just way too wild. The problem now is that he’s leaving too many balls in the middle of the zone. He’ll look great for 3 pitches, and then he’ll miss location badly and the ball gets ripped.

    1. Also noted that he’s high on Caba in a response in the comments but noted it’s difficult to separate complex guys due to small sample sizes.

  2. Agreed. There are plenty of AAAA guys like that, but I think Dahl is a little better than that. Big opportunity for him, hope he rakes.

  3. Barring anymore Phillies’ major injuries, when you look at the division…Braves without their ace and superstar for the rest of the season, Nats -young, but hot and cold…and now the Mets and Miami more or less floundering…the Phillies should win the division. It will come down to between the Phillies, Dodgers and Brewers for the best NL record. and the seeding for the play-offs. Phillies may be able to afford the opportunity to bring up a Mercado or Abel later in the season and give them an opportunity.

  4. Not sure why you (or anybody) thought that Walker was getting moved during the season. Besides the fact that he’s not performing well, Phillies need all the healthy arms they can get. The Brewers have had 11 pitchers make starts for them. The Phillies? 6.

If Walker is getting moved, it’ll be during the offseason.

      1. We all agree that Turnbull should be starting over Walker. However, this isn’t fantasy baseball.

First, how many innings does Turnbull really have? At a certain point, he’ll need to get shut down so when that happens, he won’t be available in the postseason either.

And second, DD promised Walker (and his agent) a starter job. Even though Walker didn’t get a postseason start last season, he still performed up to his contract in his first season. Walker will get a long leash to prove himself. Walker will not lose his starter job after 7 starts. Heck, I don’t even think he’ll lose his job after 15 starts. If Walker loses his job, then the Phillies might as well prepare to eat half his contract and trade him off before the deadline or in the offseason. Walker (and his agent) will not be happy and they will want out.

  5. Yes, David Dahl was a former top 10 pick. Yes, he was a former top 50 prospect. Yes, he does hold a career .784 ML OPS. Here comes the but:

But he’s played the majority of his career in Colorado and his career splits are:

    home OPS: .852

    away: .705

Dahl is not a stellar defender and is career WAR is 0.7.

Seems every year, people get hyped with the bench player of the season:

2022: Dalton Guthrie (now with Red Sox AAA team)

    2023: Weston Wilson

    2024: David Dahl

  6. Jose Rodriguez suspended for a year for betting. I guess MLB couldn’t let teams know about the investigation after CWS released him.

  7. Amen to the post above re: Walker!

Also, I reread the piece Keith Law posted about a month ago on Justin Crawford. Law said that while Crawford’s hitting and in-game power had improved, he still needed to lower his hands at the plate to shorten his loopy swing, which will likely get exposed as he works his way toward the majors.

Has anyone seen whether he’s made this kind of adjustment?

Also also, is it too early to start thinking of the draft? (Brody Brecht is my guy at the moment)

Also also also, the Orioles have an uber-talented 19-year-old catching prospect, Samuel Basallo, who will likely be dealt at the deadline this year, since Rutschman isn’t going anywhere. The same *could* but said for JT but, at 33 years old, is it too early to start thinking of a replacement? (I say this knowing we just traded O’Hoppe, but, at just 19 years old, I think it’ll take a few more years for Basallo to get called up, anyway.)

    Like

    1. Basallo is the #13 prospect in all of baseball. He can also play 1B and obviously DH. He’s at AA but the Orioles can slow his promotions if they want to. He’s obviously blocked but the Orioles would have to be blown away to trade him. And when I mean blown away, we’re talking Painter for Basallo type deal. The Phillies are not getting Basallo.

If the Orioles want to get Tarik Skubal of the Tigers, Basallo is the type of player that can get it done.

      Like

      1. Plus, Basallo may not stick behind the plate long term, could be ticketed for 1B once Mountcastle get too expensive in three years…also he may be a little too tallish. And MLB.com rated his fielding as a catcher right now at a 45 however he is young so that could improve if they keep him back there..

        Like

        1. Basallo is a true stud. O’s use him as a Dh in spring training and he is a very skilled hitter. I would say they are as high on him as they are on Jackson Holiday. He goes nowhere. Moreover, even if he did catch at all – they might use him to spell Rutschmann who frequently Dh’s.

    2. When I was young I joined one of Law’s weekly chats on ESPN and asked if im crazy to be hyped over shane victorino who was crushing it for Scranton. He replied two words “Fourth outfielder”

Dude isnt worth listening to imo.

      1. He does admit his mistakes on occasion…..Paul Goldey he overlooked big time as a DBack prospect and admits it. Same with Altuve if I recall correctly. As for Rhys….he wants posted after Rhys’ season at Reading with Dylan Cozens as the Bash Boys, ‘he swings thru too many fastballs’….translation in analyst speak, if a MLB payer cannot hit a fastball he will not go far. Rhys turned out fairly well.

  8. I’m not beating him up – he’s just nowhere near as good as another option available to the team and he’s overpaid.

And never forget that he’s so mediocre that the team couldn’t even use him in a game last postseason. Not even once. And they weren’t wrong in sitting him.

  9. You make a good point. The team actually has some weaknesses that may need to be addressed.

    1. Righty bat – it’s a real thing. Too bad neither Clemens or Dahl are righties. Weston Wilson isn’t going to be enough.
    2. Soto – I’m sorry, he’s awful. I never want to see him pitch again.
    3. Merrifield – if he can’t heat up, he serves no purpose. They will make another concerted effort to get him going, but otherwise, he’s just no longer a big league player and they should move on.
    4. Stubbs – I don’t think he’s going anywhere for a lot of reasons (some legit – he calls a good game – defense is fine), but my God, he can’t hit at all.

Walker – maybe he’s the long man, maybe he’s the 5th starter, who knows? But he does serve a purpose, because if he’s your 6th starter waiting in reserve on a championship-quality team, that’s pretty good depth. Moving him is an offseason possibility, but not now.

    1. I’ve been engaged in a friendly conversation (via text messages) with some buddies of mine concerning possible upgrades. He thinks we need to trade for an upgrade in the OF. I told him guys who play good defense and can hit are very costly and will gouge our farm system pretty badly. Guys who are less expensive play ok defense and strike out a lot are more readily available but we already have 2 of those. I’m in the camp of improving (an already good) the bullpen. This would push Soto back another notch so we won’t see him as much in meaningful situations. I just don’t think Alvarado and/or Hoffman are true lock down closers. Perhaps Orion Kerkering is??? I’d like to see the manager use him exclusively as a closer for the next 6 weeks and see how he responds. If he can’t lock it down (I think he can) trade for someone who can. If we have to give up Painter or Miller for him, I’m out. If Abel will get it done, I’d pull the trigger. I follow the Phillies very closely but not the rest of the league like when I was younger so I don’t know who might be available and for what. But right now, when Alvarado and/or Hoffman come in a game with a one-run lead, it feels more like Mitch Williams than Brad Lidge.

      1. I don’t think “closer” is in Thomson’s vocabulary as in “Brad Lidge” closer. He hasn’t shown an inclination to use anyone he has as exclusive “closer”.

Hoffman I think has done a great job to date. Keep looking for him to have a bad outing, but he hasn’t. Law of averages says he will. ERA of 1.01 and only 3 earned runs to date.

  10. Glad to see Mavis Graves selected minor league pitcher of the month for May. He should climb up the prospect ladder after mid-season when MLB.com come out with their updated rankings. Watching his videos and his mechanics and build, he has a resemblance to former Yankee pitcher Andy Pettitte.
