Leandro Pineda had a nice night at the plate, but I also watched him jog to first on a routine groundout to second. Everyone hustles on the big club. How does the organization not mandate this system wide? Where’s Mattingly and the Phillies Way?

“Everyone hustles on the big club.” What games are you watching? They are winning so no one complains. But, I can name two starters who don’t run out ground balls. And another guy didn’t hustle on a dropped fly ball to the outfield late in Saturday’s game that could have cost them.

But, you’re right. Lack of hustle has to be corrected in A-Ball.

Harper grabbed at his back on the first base jog. I was watching the Nats broadcast so I don’t know if McCarthy/Amaro mentioned it. But Brandon Marsh surprised me. I was hoping he’d get yanked for it.

Miller keeps hitting. Saltibon continuing to increase his average. Not much on the pitching front though. Abel was better I guess, any word on his velocity?

Winkleman tweeted it was 95.6 – 96.9 mph in the first.
He noted his lack of velocity in previous starts could be due to bad weather

Gee I hope not. We don’t exactly have LA weather here in the Northeast…especially in April and October. I hope MA is not just a fair weather pitcher.

Speaking on the weather, last night Wheeler said his velo was up a couple of ticks on the mph meter since it was hotter than the past earlier starts, and he prefers it that way. Though, I believe his last start which did not go as well as expected, was in the comfy indoors down in Miami

If you go to the game box score and click Summary >> All and then click on a specific AB you can see velo.
He was down to 92 in 3rd and threw a pitch 91.8 in 4th.

The weather could have been a factor…started at 68 degrees and overcast and just got chillier as the evening went on. In the his last inning , he was at high 80s pitch count to start…..he threw four 4Smr FBs…..91.6…..92.2…..92.2….and 93. So it looked like when he gets to the low 80s pitch count he declines in velo by a few ticks…perhaps last night combination of fatigue and weather I assume.

Blaming 68 degree weather on losing 4 mph in velo is BS. Sorry man. Not buying it. Something is wrong. It’s just a matter of time until they admit the real issue.

I don’t think we can’t rely 100% on Gameday and Statcast for velocity. The Phillies don’t use it. They use something in-house. FoxTrac? The same goes for pitch type. This season, they have him concentrating on his 2-seamer. I think GameDay calls it a sinker. He has been throwing more 2- than 4-seamers. I mapped out his last game where GameDay had him throwing 56 4-seamers and 17 sinkers (2-seamers). At one point it reported 14 4-seamers in a row. Not likely. The range on the 4-seamers was 96.6-89.5, on the sinker 95.6-91.1. Quite an overlap. I’m not saying ignore Gameday, just take it with a grain of salt.

It’s the relative velocity change that’s the concern, not the absolute number. So long as it is the same radar gun for pitches in the 1st and 5th inning then I don’t understand how the drop in velo can be questioned?
LikeLike
4-seamers are generally higher velo than 2-seamers. If he’s throwing more 2-seamers than GameDay is recognizing, then the reliability of the app can certainly be questioned. I don’t understand how you don’t at least acknowledge that.

speaking of guns. Klassen pitched two dominant innings tonight – no hits, no walks, 3 Ks. Last pitch was a 99.6 MPH strike at the knees! Welcome back, George!

Must not have been 68 degrees. I hear that pitches lose 4 mph if it is 68 degrees.

I kinda like the black hats, haven’t seen that many stars since I left Fort Sill.
Not much going on at Reading offensively, and since that is supposed to be a hitters park are we to conclude that our AA team doesn’t have the talent. What is the collective take?
