Box Score Recap (5/14/24)

Rainouts in the Mideast and Florida.  Jersey Shore saw their winning streak ended.  Clearwater won.

FCL Phillies (3-4) rained out today.  Heavy rain in the late morning prompted a postponement.  Game will be made up on May 21st.  I neglected to report Monday’s game.  They lost to the Blue Jays 6-3 in extra innings.

Danyony Pulido (2.79) looked good pitching five innings of a scheduled seven innings game (they can do that in the Complex League).  Pulido gave up one run on 5 hits, 2 walks, and a hit batter.  He struck out five.  He might see Clearwater at some point this summer. Juan Amarante (1.93) pitched an inning and gave up a run on one walk and 2 wild pitches.  He struck out two.  Pedro Reyes (10.80) pitched well in the seventh inning.  However, he got hit hard in the eighth, recording just one out.  He gave up four runs on four hits and a hit batter.  TBH, I don’t think he was prepared for the extra inning.  Obviously, the plan was for the three pitchers to go 5-1-1.  Kleyderve Andrade () came in to get a double play to end the inning.

The Phillies answered the Blue Jays run in the sixth inning (on a wild pitch) with two in their half on a 2-run, ground-rule double by Starling Caba.  They scored a run in the eighth on a sac fly by Leonardo RondonManolfi Jimenez (.308/.616) went 2-4.

The Threshers opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI single by Devin Saltiban.  They added a run in the third on an RBI single by Raylin Heredia.  After Daytona tied the game in the top of the sixth, the Threshers retook the lead in the bottom of the inning on a solo HR (2) by Avery Owusu-Asiedu.  They tacked on an insurance run in the seventh on an RBI triple by Dakota Kotowski.

  1. So, is there a guideline on what might determine if Andrew Painter actually starts pitching in games after his 60 day IL ends?

    1. I’m not even sure if Painter is even throwing off a mound yet. The Phillies are going to take it really slow with him. I don’t believe he’s supposed to be pitching in any games this season.

    2. Painter is not throwing from a mound yet as of the last I heard on Monday. He is long tossing from 120 feet, though. Soft, off a mound could be soon.

  2. Generally its 6 months after surgery when a player will begin some type of small throwing program. 18 Months after surgery is the generally accepted time frame to actually start pitching again.

Andrew had his surgery in late July which means he isn’t going to pitch in any games this season.

    1. Amazing the difference a year makes. We were all over ourselves with the trio. I still have faith, but was really hoping to hit on 2 of the 3. I wanted that so the farm could start supplying some players to the big club. I got my wish, but just in a different way.

  3. With all this talk about the Phillies trading for Kopech or Miller, it got me wondering: Which prospect(s) are expendable AND have the skills that other teams are willing to trade for?

I think Painter and Miller won’t be traded.

Crawford shouldn’t get traded either but I think he’s below the first 2. Caba is blocked, but I’m worried that he becomes the next Jose Altuve. It’s also only a matter of time before Caba enters the top 100. I would be leaning heavily to keep him. I would also not trade Klassen.

That pretty much leaves Mick Abel as the most expendable piece. Next, it would be Aldegheri who’s having a fantastic year at JS and could likely start at AA in the near future.

Will Mick Abel get you Mason Miller? Probably not. Kopech? The White Sox should be interested.

  4. Small moves before the deadline might obviate the need for a bigger move later — both in the pen and on the bench.

I’d like to see Michael Mercado brought into the picture. The Phils could use another reliable arm — preferably right-handed — rather than a strictly defined closer.

When Turner returns, the bench becomes Stubbs, Sosa, Merrifield and Pache. This is all right-handed and not particularly strong offensively. I’d look at David Dahl to replace Pache. I don’t see a scenario where Pache develops into much more than he is now.
