  1. Just from glancing at the numbers it seems like Eduardo Tait is really struggling at the plate. I know he is really young. Is he just overmatched physically at this point or just adjusting to being in the states? SSS? All previous reports have been glowing.

    1. Reports were glowing. He’s appeared in 5 games and has had 14 plate appearances, including 2 walks, 2 hbp, and 1 SF. I think we should wait for a much larger sample size before we jump to too many conclusions.

On the sample size issue – now it’s nice to see that, perhaps, Jordan Viars, who is said to be a superb athlete, seems to be getting some traction.

Also, I know there was some commentary recently about Mick Abel and Spencer Howard. I don’t know what the heck is going on, but when I saw his velocity drop so precipitously over a few innings, that’s exactly what I was thinking. It’s troubling because, through last year, Abel was known for his ability to hold velocity into the upper 90s well into games. Not this year. Very concerning. Very.

      1. This is why pitching prospects are so risky. Abel was a great pick. Had a great arm. He was progressing just fine. And then, for no apparent reason, he just doesn’t throw as hard. What is that? Can he recover that velocity? Maybe. Who knows?

These are the types of risks you just generally don’t have with hitters (or at least not to this degree).

        1. And, by the way, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t select pitchers in the first round, it just means there is some risk there that is hard to avoid. But it does mean, if you can find good arms in later rounds, you should jump on them – as the Phillies have in recent years.

      2. Just an FYI – there were changes with arm slot incorporated into Mick’s delivery this off season to help with command and movement, getting used to that also effected velocity a bit.  He got very ill this spring which set him back in regards to strength and weight loss.  There’s been a concerted effort since to build that back in training and weight room work while still competing – sometimes the results don’t reflect the progress but there is progress being made.  Hopefully each outing forward reflects that even more.  Really good young man, am rooting for him.

        1. Abel is already at AAA, and the Phillies have enough starting depth to not rush him (you figure Mercado is also ahead of him). He can take his time, but his early results were concerning, especially for a top 100 prospect.

          1. The results you can take or leave, especially after a month or so and it’s not a timing issue – they don’t need him this year. It’s the stuff. And, look, we are all rooting for the guy and hope he succeeds.

      3. Thanks, I had no idea the sample size was so small….that being said I agree with your concern about Abel. Maybe because of his illness this Spring his conditioning isn’t where it would be at this time

  2. Why didn’t Jeff Hoffman pitch the 10th inning yesterday after throwing only 11 pitches in the 9th inning?

    1. probably because it’s May 12th, not October 12th. This post should probably have been made in the Phillies weekly thread also

  4. Starlyn Castillo, our big international signing in 2018 ($1.6M) is finally starting to look decent after years of injury or just poor pitching. he is in heis age 22 season in Jersey Shore, so he is not old despite being in the organization for what seems like forever. He is one to keep an eye on.

    1. He’s gotten better, but his SO rate has plummeted to 5.1. Not sure what’s going on but it’s not sustainable at the higher levels with a SO rate that low.

Starlyn may be Rule 5 eligible this December….just not sure

If eligible, however, I do not see the Phillies putting him on the 40, but then again I do not any other teams picking him up since he is at the A level.

  5. Does anyone know if Klassen will pitch this week and how long Rincones Jr is expected to miss? Its been about 2 weeks so far. Btw it will be interesting if they promote Miller a little earlier to A+ then normal considering he was old for his graduating class + how well he is performing. His pedigree & performance has me as excited as I’ve ever been for a Phillies prospect at the beginning of the journey. I’ve been a board regular going back to the mistake to draft Anthony Hewett.

    1. Gabriel had surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb, is here in Clearwater working with the rehab team – will be out for awhile. George is day to day – had shoulder discomfort – precautionary to skip a turn, not sure if will pitch this week.

      1. Thanks for the info.

Not that the Phillies needed his bat, but Rincones looked prime for a monster year.

      1. Players on the 60-day IL do not count against the 165-player limit. However, there is a 15-player limit on this list.

Players on the Full Season IL do not count against the 165-player limit. No limit, but once on it the player is lost for the season.

Players on both lists must be activated by the 5th day after the completion of the world series and do count against the 175-player limit during the offseason. This doesn’t create an immediate problem since by this date all free agency eligible minor leaguers have already elected free agency.

        1. Ok thanks Jim….do teams juggle these multiple ‘7-day ILs’ or what they refer to as ‘development lists’ to work-around the MLB enforced limits also?

          Like

          1. Players on the 7-day and the Development Lists count against the 165-player limit during the season. They do not count against each affiliate’s active roster on game days.

The difference roster-wise is that there is no minimum/maximum number of days that a player must remain on a Development List. Whereas a player on any injured list (including the majors) must remain on the list for at least the full 7-, 10-, 15-, 60- days required by that particular list.

I believe, but am not 100% sure, that a player on the 7-day IL cannot work out with or travel with his team while on the list. There is no such restriction on players on the Development List. If this is accurate, I do not think it is strongly policed by the leagues.

The lists have no effect on the offseason player limits. They do not exist during the offseason.

Even as I reread thus before hitting Reply, it seems a little confusing to me. I hope this helps.

  6. Curious… Now that May 1st has come and gone, have any ML players opted for free agency? I’m referring to the guys who didn’t make the big club in spring training and now have the right to seek a new team since they haven’t been called up.
