Box Score Recap (4/5/24)

The IronPigs were rained out Friday for the fourth consecutive game.  They haven’t played since Sunday and will play two tomorrow.  Mick Abel was scheduled to pitch one game today before Friday’s rainout.

Reading, Jersey Shore, and Clearwater all opened their seasons with victories.

Gonna cover the games differently this season.  I’ll spend less time on game action and more on what the prospects do.

Lehigh Valley (1-2) was banged once again.  Three games scheduled in the next two days.

  1. Mick Abel hasn’t pitched yet
  2. Orion Kerkering sent to CLW to rehab with all LHV’s rainouts this week
  3. Griff McGarry – one appearance, 1 run in 1 IP
  4. Simon Muzziotti – 1-4 in 3 games
  5. José Rodríguez – one appearance, 0 run in 1 IP

Reading (1-0) won at Bowie, 5-2.  They broke open a tie game with 3 runs in the ninth inning.

Gabriel Rincones tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo HR (1).  Later in the inning, Carson Taylor had an RBI single.  The go ahead run in the ninth came when Casey Martin reached on an error.  Carlos De La Cruz drove in the final runs on an RBI single.

Jordi Martinez got the win with 1.2 perfect innings and 4 K.  Max Lazar picked up the save with a perfect inning and 3 K.

  1. Andrew Painter – still rehabbing, seen tossing from just over 100 feet
  2. Gabriel Rincones went 1-4 with a HR (1), RBI, BB, K
  3. Carlos De La Cruz went 2-5 with 2 RBI, 2 K
  4. Christian McGowan – dev list, pitched in complex game Friday, looks ready to go north
  5. Caleb Ricketts went 0-3 with 2 BB, K
  6. Robert Moore DNP

Jersey Shore (1-0) beat Aberdeen, 3-2.  They walked off with 2 runs in the ninth inning.

William Bergolla opened the scoring with a sac fly in the second inning following Leandro Pineda’s leadoff triple.  They tied the game in the ninth on Emaarion Boyd’s rbi triple following Jordan Dissin’s one-out walk and pinch runner Cade Fergus‘ stolen base.  Justin Crawford walked and stole second before, Pineda was intentionally walked, and the BlueClaws walked off on a wild pitch.

Andrew Walling picked up the victory with a 1-2-3 ninth.  Wesley Moore pitched a one-hit eighth with 3 K.

  1. Justin Crawford went 1-4 with a BB, K, SB
  2. Bryan Rincon went 0-5 with 2 K
  3. William Bergolla went 0-2 with a SF, RBI, BB
  4. Pan Wen-hui is on the IL
  5. Emaarion Boyd went 2-5 with a triple, RBI, K, SB
  6. Hendry Mendez went 2-3 with a BB, K
  7. Samuel Aldegheri pitched 4.1 innings, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 BB, 4 K

Clearwater (1-0) won at Bradenton, 5-2.  The Threshers fell behind early, tied the game with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, and dropped a three-spot in the eighth.  Rehabbing Orion Kerkering got the win with 4 K in 1.1 innings.

Avery Owusu-Asiedu (O-woo’-soo Ah-see’-ah-doo) reached on a one-out single in the fifth, stole second, and scored on Aidan Miller’s RBI single.  The game was tied in the sixth.  Bryson Ware singled with one out, stole second, and scored on Pierce Bennett’s RBI single.  They went ahead for good it in the eighth.  Jordan Viars walked and went to third on Ware’s single to left field.  He scored the go-ahead run on Bennett’s second RBI single, Ware to third.  He scored on a force out on Keaton Anthony’s ground ball.  He scored on Luis Caicuto’s RBI double.  (Caicuto was a rule 5 selection back in December.)

Kerkering entered the game in the seventh with two outs and nobody on base.  He struck out the batter and returned for the eighth where he struck out the side.  He was too good for this level when he started his season here last season.  At least he pitched two multiple batters over two innings.  Now on to another level I expect.

Saul Teran made it interesting loading the bases in the ninth on a hit and two walks.  He struck out the side for his first save.

  1. Aidan Miller went 1-4 with an RBI, BB, 2 K, SB
  2. Devin Saltiban went 0-5 with 3 K
  3. Alex McFarlane DNP
  4. TJayy Walton DNP
  5. Raylin Heredia went 0-3 with a BB, 3 K
  6. Kehden Hettiger DNP
  7. George Klassen DNP
  8. Nikau Pouaka-Grego DNP

Note: 15 Threshers struck out.

  1. With the new, lower organizational roster limits, can we afford the luxury of carrying 2 Jose Rodriguez’s?

    Like

  2. thanks Jim. I love looking at boxscores again and I love 3 wins on the first night. It’s Jose Ruiz by the way at LHV and he’ll be in Philly at some point this season but he’s not a kid.
Jim – I’m fine with the prospect focus, that’s who we care about but please add Simmons to your list at Reading. He still has a chance to be something.

    1. I’m still learning who are in the various rotations. I was surprised to see Edington, a recent draftee who didn’t pitch last year, get the opener for CWater. How does he look? At J Shore, Walling picked up where he left off last year, getting lots of outs.

      1. oops, I meant Moore who continued to get lots of outs but he’s 24 at high A so he needs to move up to Reading quickly.

          1. age is an issue when a 24 yr old is getting 20 yr olds out. He might just be older and smarter, and not necessarily good enough to get 24 yr olds out.

I would have been one of those guys; 80 games, 35 innings.

        1. rocco…I think I read that he was the fastest player in the entire system…that would include Rojas, Crawford and Boyd. Not sure if that is a correct statement that he could be that fast and that big. Maybe that was taken in a staright dash…like 40 or 60 yards and not from the plate to each base.

    1. rocco….here is more to the Jose ‘Popeye’ Rodriguez story….froma blog site of the Sox…..not confirmed on the details of why things may have happened however.

“And before a full case is presented here, early warning that words might need to be eaten. I suspect there is more to this DFA that meets the eye. Rodríguez was demoted out of major league camp pretty early in spring training (March 8), ……….Some time after that, Popeye left the team to attend to a “family matter.” There’s a chance there’s more to the story, as in an even more curious move, Rodríguez was demoted to the Birmingham Barons roster on March 30.”

….strikingly similar to how the Phillies got Sosa from the Cardinals a few years back.

Aidan Miller, 3B/SS (No. 3/MLB No. 57)The Phillies are going to continue to be grateful for Miller’s broken hamate during his senior year of high school. That’s the only reason he lasted until No. 27 overall in last year’s first round. He’s already shown signs of being the steal of the round, if not the Draft, but he’s going to cement it by topping 30 home runs in his first full season and reaching High-A Jersey Shore in the process.

At first glance physical presence looks like a re-incarnation of Cristian Sanchez…hope he turns out the same way. Last few years however Dodgers have used him mainly in relief roles. 7. I was really happy to see so many comments in a minor league thread. I thought there would be serious prospect discussion for a change.

Unfortunately, Woody had to start off by being an ass making a joke about a mistake I made instead of helping with the mistake.

Thank you, Murray, for pinpointing my error so that I may correct it more quickly.

After a brief discussion about our minors, the talk degenerated into the same blather that I have to tolerate in the Phillies discussion.

Maybe if you had real prospect discussions here you wouldn’t have to wonder who these new pitchers and hitters are.

This is not the place to talk about Moniak, the Angels, Trout, eclipses, horse racing, jockeys, air force, classmates, congress, high school sports, the A Team, and all the other bullshit above.

I’m sorry for all of you who appreciate how much time I waste on this. I have health issues that really limit what I can do. Nothing life threatening, but serious enough that I can’t get to the Complex as much as I used to or would like to.

You know, I was once chided in the comments when I first started here for reporting spring training like a high school girl. Well. the discussion here is much less about baseball and more like what I was accused of.

I’m done staying up late to write this. Thankfully this happened early before I became too invested in providing content. Since I declined media privileges a few years back, I get nothing for my time. Zero, nada, zilch. I continued for the few who appreciated my meager effort and cared more about prospect talk than Phillies talk.

Fade to dark until I change my mind, if I change my mind.

    Hope you are well Hinkie.

  8. For those thinking that AAA is for everyone, Steve Potter had these great facts on his site:

Alec Bohm has played in just 15 AAA level games and that they all came after he made his major league debut?  Or that Brandon Marsh played in just 24 AAA contests before debuting with the Angels or that Bryson Stott has played in only 19 AAA level games, nine of which came after his big league debut or that Aaron Nola made just 6 AAA starts before joining the Phillies ?  Point is that it’s not an absolute that every player plays extensively or for that matter at all at the AAA level,

    1. It’s not a must, but those guys you mentioned were 3 top 14 picks and a second round pick. And they were all ranked at one point in the top 100.

Johan Rojas was never ranked in the top 100, and only 2 years ago, he had a .663 OPS across 2 levels.

      1. They may him a starter. He was a closer when they drafted him I believe.
      2. They must have really cleaned up his mechanics. He had a really high walk rate in college and the 9Ks to 0 walks is really really impressive for any pitcher at any level. Very exciting start to his MiLB career.

    1. George Klassen has been on the  radar in the past…..he was Perfect Game’s (PG)No. 1 pitcher and No. 2 overall player in Wisconsin asa senior in HS,…………also ranked by PG as the No. 23 right-handed pitcher in the country and No. 77 overall player nationally while handing him a perfect-10 prospect grade · and ranked by BA as the No. 259 player for the 2020 MLB Draft. He just started a litle slow at Minnesota after his injury and TJ surgery in his freshmen year and struggled early then picked up late in his last season. So he was a slow-burner. Maybe now he will be the guy he was coming out of HS in 2020. He can get it up to 102, but will always need to maintain control which his eluded him some in the past. Hs PC at Minnesot Ty McDevitt ….”And he has as quick or quicker of an arm than guys like [former Gophers] Max Meyer and Lucas Gilbreath, guys in the big leagues right now. There’s a lot of impressive stuff there.”

  10. Between Jose Rodriguez and George Klassen (thanks Romus for the review) where are they likely to fall in the top 30 prospects > Rodriguez in the top 20 and Klassen in the same area ? Also, the player acquired for Brogdon – Benony Robles from the Dodgers appears to make the top 30 ? Supposedly he is to report to high A ?

The player churn by the Phillies – do we think that is continued attempts to build depth, or trying to find a diamond in the rough ?

Lastly – to Jim’s comments above – I agree, too much palaver about eclipse, dogs, Trout etc. that has nothing to do with the Phillies, or even baseball. This fine site is becoming a facebook page.

    1. Klassen is already in the MLB pipeline top 30 at #29. He’ll likely move up into the top 10 if he continues at this rate at the mid-season update.

Jose Rodriguez was #6 last season for the White Sox. Pipeline just slotted him at #28 for the Phillies.

Benony Robles is 23 and the Dodgers were using him primarily as a reliever. If he gets into the top 30, it’ll probably be in the high 20s range.

This is definitely about trying to find lotto tickets. Teams scout other systems and the Phillies probably feel that they can unlock something. But don’t get your hopes up, most lotto tickets fail miserably.

    2. RU…..looking at Klassen’s 2023 stats…..because of his poor control….he only pitched 50 innings…started 12 games and came in relief for one game at Minnesota….so he rarely went or got to the 5th or completed it. So the Phillies do have a work in progress for him going on to get him to go further in games and still maintain adequate control. Hopefully he can do that without any troubles.

  11. Prospect performance that gets me excited after only 2 games:
    – Rincones with 2 homers in 2 games (both away games)
    – as mentioned above Klassen being a starter and commanding his elite stuff
    – Hettiger’s great debut. 2-3 with a Homer and walk. Early power display for a 19yo
    – Crawford with 4 walks and 3 stolen bases in 2 games. We know that he has elite bat to ball skills so nice to see him working counts and being comfortable with a walk.
    – It’s early but nice to see Andrew Schultz with a 3K, 0 walk inning. He is a 100+ RP. His issue has always been command. Need to see more but a positive first appearance.
    – Mercado with two clean IP. I think he will be in Philly this season.

I like the start. Season is long. But good stuff so far.

        1. They also consistently produce very good players. The team I like to think of in this regard (at least historically) is the Yankees. For every Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra, or Derek Jeter, there was a Bernie Williams, a Jorge Posada, a Tommy Henrich, an Elston Howard or a Gil McDougald – championship-quality first-division regulars who the made those teams dynasties. Their analogue on the current Phillies is a guy like Bryson Stott – Stott will probably never be a star, but he’s already a heck of a player.

          Like

          1. Stott is pretty close to a star. Or at least an all star player. He had a 4.1 WAR second season. Was top 3 in gold glove. As a reference, Ozzie Albies had a 4 war season last year.

            Like

            1. Stott is one of these players who is a lot better than most people think. He’s what you get when you do pretty much everything well – there are really no holes in his game. He’s a first division regular at second right now. He’s a guy you’d be happy to have on a championship team. He may never be a star (or maybe he will), but he’s really good.

              Like

            2. Albies OPS was .100 points higher in 2023 vs. Stott so yes, Albies is an all-star and Stott is a good everyday regular.

Another example of how WAR is a flawed measure.

            3. Stott had a +6 defensive runs saved (“DRS”) and 16 outs above average (“OAA”). Albies had 0 DRS and -9 OAA…seems to me to be another example of how fans do not value defense rather than an indictment of WAR.

            4. so now you like WAR? lol…Stott was a 4.3 bWAR player in 2023. the right way to look at that is to average the two metrics, which makes Albies a slightly more valuable player, but they are very close.

Albies is a star, no question. Stott is pretty darn close IMO, which was the point that I originally made.

            5. no, I don’t like war. Just noting how it varies depending on the version you use.

also, DRS stats are a bit subjective which is another issue with their inclusion.

  12. Now I did see Mercado vs Pittsburgh in spring training and he throws 95-96 with some movement. I thought then we are likely to see him from the pen this year at some point. Per comment above – he reminds one of Hoffman.

    1. So far so good for him at LHV……he was the 40th oveerall selection by the Rays in 2017, 7th overall HS pitcher selected…so he does come with some pedigree behind him.
