The Phillies have been making roster decisions almost daily. Here’s an up to date recounting and the roster reasons for some.
The active roster has to be down to 26 players, 13 pitchers and 13 position players by opening day, March 28th.
The Phillies are currently at 33 players on the active roster:
- Pitchers (17) – Alvarado, Brogdon, Covey, Dominguez, Hoffman, Kerkering, Marte,
Nola, Ortiz, Rucker, Sanchez, Soto, Strahm, Suarez, Turnbull, Walker, Wheeler - Catchers (3) – Marchan, Realmuto, Stubbs
- Infielders (6) – Bohm, Clemens, Harper, Sosa, Stott, Turner
- Outfielders (6) – Castellanos, Cave, Marsh, Merrifield, Pache, Rojas
- DH (1) – Schwarber
Early rumblings hint that four guys will start the season on an injury list – Covey (shoulder), Kerkering (flu), Rucker (finger), Marchan (back). Only rumblings mind you from beat writer articles. The injuries may be just guesses.
If the active roster comes from the above players less the four “injured” that means three will be sent to Lehigh Valley (or released) from among the guys not in italics – one pitcher (from among Brogdon, Marte, Ortiz, Turnbull), one infielder (Clemens), and one outfielder (Rojas, Pache).
There are still 5 NRIs in camp – RHP Bellatti, Ruiz, INF Kingery, OF Dahl, Stevenson. Bellatti and Ruiz are longshots to make the opening day roster and would necessitate a transaction to get them onto the 40-man and a transaction to make room for them. Not entirely out of the question but unlikely.
The Phillies have placed 10 minor league pitchers on the 60-day injury list. This is an unusual occurrence this far out from the start of the minor league seasons.
The new minor league CBA was adjusted to allow players to be assigned to the 60-day IL on March 19th this year. There is a 15 player limit for the minor league 60-day IL, but no limit for the Full Season Injury List.
The Phillies finished with 28 players on the 60 and FS lists – 2 Phillies on the 60 (Hoskins and Uelman), 3 DSL players on the 60, 13 stateside minor leaguers on the 60, and 10 minor leaguers on the FS.
The ten players placed on the 60-day IL this week are all pitchers – Nick Snyder, Painter, Pipkin, Garbrick, Pan Wen-hui, McFarlane, Velasquez, Gair, Armenta, Fowler. It would be normal yet incorrect to assume that all ten are recovering from TJ surgery.
We have 297 players by my count – 33 on the Phillies active roster, 5 NRIs, 166 stateside minor league players, 71 DSL players, and 22 unassigned IFA players.
The offseason 175 player limit will be reduced to 165 players when the minor league season starts. Placing 10 players on the 60-day IL provides some roster relief since players on the 60-day IL and FS IL do not count against the limits.
I currently count 171 players on the stateside minor league rosters (297 minus the MLB active roster, the DSL players, and the IFA players). The ten guys on the 60-day IL lower that number to 161. This number includes the 5 NRIs who will likely be reassigned to minor league camp in the coming days. At least 3 guys from the 40-man roster will have to be reassigned to the minors with transactions to make sure there is room.
Random stuff
- There is a 35-player limit per team in the DSL. Our 71 players include 2 guys on the restricted list who don’t count against the limit and who are likely already released.
- The 22 IFA players are from the current signing class and will likely have to be assigned by the start of the DSL season. A few players may be promoted stateside. The rest will be subject to roster manipulation on the 60-day IL or released.
Important Dates
- March 28, 2024: Phillies’ opening day, active roster reduced to 26 players
- March 29, 2024: Opening day for Lehigh Valley
- April 5, 2024: Opening day for Reading, Jersey Shore, and Clearwater
- May 4, 2024: Start of the Florida Complex League
- June 3, 2024: Approximate start of the DSL
- July 14-16, 2024: Amateur draft, Arlington, TX
- July 30, 2024 (5:00 PM): Signing deadline for drafted players. Unsigned players with college eligibility can reenter the next draft. Those without remaining college eligibility remain on the team’s negotiation list until a week before the next draft. Players who are not offered a contract become free agents.
Transactions – non-bold text indicates the guys who were called up for ST games. Once called up a player remains available for future games. There doesn’t have to be an additional transaction for additional games. You’ll notice that a couple of minor leaguers have been traded for cash. The Phillies are actively trying to place players on other teams rather than release them. A classy move, I think.

According to Todd Zolecki on Twitter, “Phillies made three more roster moves: INF/OF Scott Kingery and OFs David Dahl and Cal Stevenson reassigned to minor league camp”.
That will raise the stateside count by three (to 164 by my count), but I’ve already heard that a couple of other minor leaguers were released. Waiting to confirm.
That leaves RHPs Bellatti and Ruiz as the only two NRIs still in camp. Ruiz is slated to pitch today in Tampa. So are Brogdon and Turnbull.

Jim: Is reporter “X” a credible source w/credible resources? Never been a fan of his stuff and seen some questionable stuff from him lately.
Didn’t really know how to pose the question delicately. If you can’t answer, I get it.

Zolecki? Yes, he’s very credible. He’s MLB’s Phillies beat writer so he is going to have impeccable sources. His stuff may be a little candy-coated since he’s an MLB employee, but it will almost always be accurate. He’ll only be wrong when his source misleads him.
If you mean another reporter, I’ll need a name and I won’t be shy with my assessment. If you mean one of the bloggers I follow, I’ll not comment on non-paid reporters. They are a lot like me though one or two might have better sources than I. Maybe not. My sources are also impeccable.

Unpopular or not …One last time … sign Bauer. He’s hitting 98mph … as a starter. No brainer at this point. With the golden boy Ohtani in some fishy gambling waters… how much more high horsing can the league do? I just really hope if it’s not the Phillies, it’s not another contender. Bauer would put the braves over, … Texas , dvacks… list goes on.
trade walker, sign Bauer…

i saw picture of Abel in back field pitching to Harper . Jim you know how he looked?

Abel or Harper?
Abel looked sharp in three innings, no runs, one hit, no walks. One of his four Ks was Harper.
Harper had seven plate appearances and went 2 for 6 with a HR (a no doubter off Mercado), single, and walk. He struck out twice. He did not play the field but looked fine running the bases, no ill effects from the recent “back” issue that sidelined him for several days.

Pan Wen-hui…….unless my recall is off, I thought he had a broken pinky…..maybe he will not need the full 60 to come back…unless the org. deem it necessary to keep him on it for the duration, to satisfy the numbers game of under the stateside limit.

Call it pinky-extended. I asked him “how’s the finger?” and he pointed to the side of his hand below the pinky. Probably a little more lengthy rehab than just the pinky?

Walker getting an MRI, Turnbull first crack at rotation if Walker is shelved for a bit.

Turnbull turned in a good outing yesterday…rather see him in there then T Walker at this point…….Turnbull does not give up HRs from what I have seen in the past…..if he sticks on the club CBP will be a true test for him when he pitches at the Bank. And now two years remove from TJ we could see a real difference maker at the end of the rotation.

If Turnbow can give us 2 decent years the combined contract with Walker won’t be too bad.

Jim, what’s your take on Cam Wynne getting released? Threw some really good ball at High A last year. Just the 165 roster crunch?
LikeLike
Yes, the 165-player limit will generate a few surprise transactions. But to the Phillies credit, they do try to find a home for players before they release them. Some have been traded for cash considerations. Usually a very nominal fee. The problem is that all 30 teams are cutting rosters at the same time and there are few opportunities for most of these players.
