A New Season, January 11, 2024

We arrived at the Complex before the outdoor activities commenced, as we have each day.  The grounds crew had continued to make repairs after the storm. But there is another storm forecast for Friday.  And another for early next week.  We are not accustomed to this type of weather at this time of year.  It is likely caused by this year’s El Nino in the Pacific.  If the water temperature in the Gulf was warmer, we would likely face hurricane conditions or tropical storms at the very least.

Today, there was a slight change in the workouts.  The position players continued to perform their exercises and receive ground balls on Carlton Field.  But the pitchers moved over to Ashburn to perform their exercises and stretching.  Then they would retreat to Schmidt to do their running.

With the players scattered over more territory, we had to cover more ground to watch the different groups as their activities overlapped.  In actuality, we probably walked about more and saw less.

The only new player I identified was OF Jordan Viars.  He only just arrived late yesterday, So, if you are concerned by the absence of any players you would expect to participate in the camp, don’t worry.  They probably just haven’t arrived yet.

As promised, here are the guys I have seen so far, grouped by position.

Pitchers (39)

  • Mick Abel, Samuel Aldegheri, Andrew Baker, Brandon Beckel, Wilmer Blanco,
  • Cam Brown, Jean Cabrera, Ethan Chenault, Alexis De La Cruz, Trey Dillard,
  • Jake Eddington, Alex Garbrick, Tristan Garnett, Mavis Graves,
  • Christian Hernandez, Estibenzon Jimenez, George Klassen, Jordi Martinez,
  • Luis Martinez, Gunner Mayer, Tommy McCollum, Alex McFarlane,
  • Christian McGowan, Tyler McKay, Wesley Moore, Mitch Neunborn,
  • Micah Ottenbreit, Andrew Painter, Pan Wen-Hui, Jonathan Petit, Dominic Pipkin,
  • Alex Rao, Luke Russo, Andrew Schultz, Enrique Segura, Casey Steward,
  • Saul Teran, Giussepe Velasquez, Andrew Walling

Catchers (8)

  • Lou Albrecht, Luis Caicuta, Jordan Dissin, Kehden Hettiger, Angel Mata,
  • Caleb Ricketts, Eduardo Tait, Jared Thomas

Infielders (13)

  • Keaton Anthony, Zach Arnold, William Bergolla, Nolan Beltran, Starlyn Caba,
  • Aroon Escobar, Aidan Miller, Robert Moore, Nikau Pouaka-Grego, Felix Reyes,
  • Bryan Rincon, Devin Saltiban, Juan Villavicencio

Outielders (10)

  • Carlos De La Cruz, Raylin Heredia, Marcus Lee Sang, Hendry Mendez,
  • Avery Owusu-Asiedu, Leandro Pineda, Ricardo Rosario, AJ Shaver,
  • Jordan Viars, TJayy Walton

So, that’s 70 players at the Complex during the High-Performance Camp.  Some guys are here on rehab and not participating in the camp.  I’m not going to say for sure who is and isn’t on the rehab list.  Obviously, we are all pretty sure that Painter is, but since I can’t watch every player’s action for every moment they are on the field, I am not going to speculate.

Earlier I reported Wilfredo Blanco as participating.  That was a mistake on my part.  Blanco’s first name is Wilmer.  I think I confused his name with Wilfredo Flores, a second baseman/outfielder at Jersey Shore.

    1. I can’t really offer an opinion. He was signed late in ST, like end of March, and breezed through the lowest levels in 4 appearances before reaching Reading.

  1. According to the below article the Phillies seem to have an Australian pipeline set up. Newly signed left handed, 26 year old pitcher Lachlan Wells says he picked the Phillies because 11 of his fellow players from Adelaide are in the organization. https://baseball.com.au/news/gauci/

    1. Yes, the Phillies have had a special arrangement with Adelaide for several years now. We’ve even hired some of their coaches. I think the Jersey Shore bench coach, Chris Adamson, is from Adelaide. The Giants pitching coach is Josh Tols, a former Phillies farmhand.
