Any chance Wilson or Viars bounce back next season and reestablish themselves? With their draft status, they’ll both get a long leash but they’ve been underwhelming to date. They could even be the poster children on why the hitting instruction was changed. I guess we could add Ortiz to this list too

I’ll probably be voting for both eventually, but Viars first because he has more time to turn it around. Jim seemed to suggest that he’s not the most coachable player, which is unfortunate. Hopefully he realizes that his career depends on working well with the instructors.

Baseball can certainly be ego crushing. These guys all had tremendous success previously. Has to be so hard when you struggle for the first time in your life. I remember talking to a high draft pick’s father at spring training about how the kid couldn’t believe how good all the pitchers were. He couldn’t hit after killing it in high school. It’s certainly all about adjusting.

Why so little love for Lindlow? Yes he doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but he’s a lefty & he’s age appropriate. A fifth starter is nothing to take for granted. Falter was very important for the 2022 Phillies.

He has to slot in behind Plassmeyer doesn’t he? Plassmeyer had better numbers at a higher level with basically the same profile.
No guarantee that Lindow is a major leaguer either just because he’s got that “safe” profile. I’d rather take a chance on a higher ceiling player.

It seams, the more volatility the more interest is generated? While the steady player continues to do his job, slowly moves up the ladder & eventually contributes to the big club. I’m not saying he should be rated in the top ten, but as he moves through the system he should move up the list. I’m not sure where he ranked last yr, but I wonder if he was in the top 20? He was 8th on the readers top 30 in 2020. Now he doesn’t qualify for top 20? He’s not on MLB’s top 30 for the Phillies??

In 2020 there was more hope that his development would take a positive turn. I.e. an increase in velocity, or a new out pitch. The longer time goes on the less chance of developing those things.
Maybe he’s the next Bailey falter but that’s probably his best hope. How much value is there in being the next Alec Asher, which is a more likely outcome?

I hope both Viars and Wilson have good seasons, and force me to vote them Top 15 next season when we do this Poll. But, for now, they are not Top 25 for me.

Viars is currently 19-years old and also will be going into his age19 season…274 total minor league plate appearances….I really think he deserves a little longer leash, that many on here seem to want to tighten and declare him a busting candidate.

So, because of his youth (and draft slot) he’s entitled to being voted onto a prospect poll in spite of two meh seasons and competing against prospects who have had better seasons?
Here’s a bit of irony. Everyone here rightfully recognizes that the organization is better at developing pkitchers and complains about the dearth of hitting prospects (because of the guys in charge of development), yet 11 of the 19 prospects voted so far are hitters, 6 of the last 7, and it appears soon-to-be 7 of 8.
Hopefully, this comment doesn’t influence the vote because the second place prospect this poll is a guy who has pitched 12 innings the past TWO seasons, is recovering from TJ surgery, won’t be back until late June or July, will likely throw about 30 innings this season, and be on a pitch and innings count next.

The only players left to vote for are either short on track record or low on ceiling. I think it makes sense to favor the less proven guys with maybe more natural talent. Also, Matt makes a good point below about why the perception is the team is better at developing pitchers.
This time around voting for players in this range, more than most years, feels like throwing darts. Which isn’t to say it’s not a worthwhile exercise.

Only my opinion, Jim, but I think some of the voting is wishful thinking on the hitting prospects, and the fact that Painter, Abel and McGarry sit at the top, there is a feeling that they we develop Pitchers better. We don’t have a hitting prospect anywhere close to the perceived ceilings of Painter and Abel. Again, just my opinion.

matt…….drafting Bohm and Stott numero uno……and then pitchers Painter/Abel also numero uno, probably tells you what their projection will be.
Of course, it did not quite work well with Moniak or Haseley
But still…development results or their projections within a system is not always set to a strict formula for success.
