This morning we’ll move on to the Readers’ Top Thirty vote for the #4 prospect.
Grif McGarry was your selection as the #3 prospect. He received 49 of 98 votes cast. Here are the complete final results.
Griff McGarry: 49 votes, 50%
Johan Rojas: 21 votes, 21.43%
Justin Crawford: 19 votes, 19.39%
Carlos De La Cruz: 2 votes, 2.04%
Andrew Baker: 2 votes, 2.04%
Gabriel Ricones: 1 vote, 1.02%
Rickardo Perez: 1 vote, 1.02%
Lee Hao Yu: 1 vote, 1.02%
Dalton Guthrie; 1 vote, 1.02%
William Bergolla: 1 vote, 1.02%
Because of the limited number of votes allowed (the app calls them signals and limits us to 2500) I’ll be closing polls when a clear victor can be determined. I wish I had cut the first poll short before expending so many signals on a clear winner.
McGarry’s spot in the poll will be filled by Michael Plassmeyer and Jordan Fowler.
Results, So Far
It comes as no surprise that the first three spots went to the three pitching prospects who have received the most hype this season. It will be interesting to see the outcomes of the next few polls.
- Andrew Painter
- Mick Abel
- Grif McGarry

I stayed with Rojas at number 4. If he was good enough for Romus earlier, he is for me as well. I have to take those of you who have seen these guys for assistance.

Don….you have chosen well! 🙂

To me, Crawford is more likely than Rojas to become a star but Rojas sure narrowed the gap with his performances in Reading and the fall league. Big drop off after the top 5 and it’s not clear who is 6-10.

Also went with Rojas. Esteury Ruiz was just the headliner in the Sean Murphy. Referring to the prospects, not dismissing Contreras. Of course, Rojas has to hit, but I am very encouraged by his AFL stint. Crawford, Baker and Hue Lee are next for me, and not necessarily in that order.

I had Rojas at 4, although not enthusiastically. After Crawford (he’s sort of 5 by default), I have Lee. He was a very impressive prospect last year at 19 years old.

had Rojas at three so guess I have him at 4..

Where would Ohoppe be in the list if he were stilaphil?
360AB and 26 dingers. 540 AB would have netted 39 hr.
Good luck to him and glad they have J. T.

He would be 1 or 2. Probably 2 just because Painter is our best advanced pitching prospect either since Cole Hamels or Aaron Nola. In a typical year, O’Hoppe would be our top prospect.

II was in the minor leagues, similar to Kingery. He might be a high Phils prospect if still in the team control, but as yo imply, Tg, it seems proper to value prospects more where the major league team has more need.

Tony,
If I were still in denial, I would have included O’Hoppe in the polls. If he were still in our organization, I think O’Hoppe would have slotted in at #2 or #3, either in front of or behind Abel with Painter still #1. FWIW, I’ve heard O’Hoppe is going into ST as the Angels’ first-string catcher ahead of Max Stassi.

He would be the starting catcher in LV if he were still a Philly.

Despite his 2022 stats seeming putrid, Crause might be my #5 pick based on need, if he was on the list

Thanks for the confirmation on Ohoppe. Looks like they are handing him the mlbjob to loose.
I’ve been enjoying writips about Phil’s minor leaguers.
I think this seems like the first year he’s put stuff on his blog?
I noticed that he isn’t noted among the resources.
Are you guys familiar with him?

Yes. He is a close friend of mine. We go to the Complex together all year. He asked me to remove the link to his site from the resources list. He doesn’t want the traffic we have here or on other sites. He doesn’t want to deal with comments or discussions. Be happy you found his site, but don’t post his link here. I’ll just keep deleting it until he tells me it’s okay to allow it. Thank you for understanding. Even if you don’t.

Understand completely, will not continue.
Not in denial either. He just finished the year better than the first half which surprised me.. Will likely work out best for all involved.
I think 3 yrs ago marsh was rated #1 prospect for the angels. We, as they would have, would like to see his k rate drop, but he’s an adequate defender, at least for now.
Ohoppes OB% and k rate is good for a power hitter, but it was AA, not mlb yet.
Carry on….

Back when he was drafted, O’Hoppe came to camp as a defense-first prospect. The offense has surprised ever since his GCL season.

I saw other night on MLB that O’Hoppe was penciled in as the starting catcher for the Angels next season. FWIW.

It would be a great story if Kingery can play, even in a utility role. I think this is the last season of his contract. Loved him when he was coming up, and I thought we had our Dustin Pedroia. Excellent defensive 2B, line drive/gap hitter, terrific speed. What happened is a mystery, but it would be great if he could contribute at all.

If he doesn’t hit again this year at LHV, he’ll probably get released midseason. Talk about a guy who needs a fresh start in a new system…

I don’t think so. He’s a steady fielder and a good teammate. He won’t be blocking anybody in our organization. He’ll be on a roster all season and then his option will be declined. Plus, he’s collecting over $8M in salary this season. He won’t be released if there is no personnel reason to do so. IMO.

You could be right but the money is a sunk cost at this point especially if he hits 200 at AAA again. I’m sure they’ll sign some more 4A guys so who knows who will play in the 2nd half.

The next poll will be up shortly.
