Phuture Phillies 2020 Reader Top 30 Poll for the Phillies #28 Prospect

2020 Reader Top 30

Connor Brogdon was selected as the organization’s #27 prospect.  He received 34 of the 129 votes cast (26%).  Jhailyn Ortiz finished second with 29 votes (22%).  Christopher Sanchez finished third with 17 votes (13%).

Cole Irvin and Josh Stephen received 16 votes (12%).  Andrew Schultz received 7 votes.  Addison Russ received 6 votes.  And, Colton Eastman received 4 votes.

With Brogdon’s selection, David Parkinson and Bailey Falter will be added to the poll.

I have received requests to add Jamari Baylor, Victor Santos, Juan Aparicio, Gunner Mayer, and Brett Schulze.  I’ll consider these five plus a few others I think should be considered like maybe Andrick Nava.

Reminder:  I am going to run several polls past thirty.  Let’s assume that they are so that I have prospects on hand to add to the top thirty as other prospects graduate to the Phillies, lose prospect status, are traded to another organization, or for some other reason are dropped from the top thirty.

  1. Oops, no poll attached. I said, a long time ago, that I’d be voting for Cole Irvin until the end and so far I’m correct. It’s like being a Democrat in a deep red state or a Republican in a deep blue state. You feel like your vote doesn’t matter but you’d be surprised how much it matters.

  2. I’m sort of locked in on Andrew Schultz. If he harnesses his control, he could be an elite closer. Aside from maybe Sanchez, I don’t think there’s another player left on this list with this much likely upside at this point.

    1. Obviously the brass liked Schultz. 6th round pick out of College and sent almost straight to LKW aside from 1 IP in GCL. I’d be a lot concerned about the extremely high WHIPS he’s put up all through college.

      That said you have to pay attention to his K/9. I think though you would have to put Russ ahead of him no? Much better track record al beit he is already 25.

      1. I’ve always had the sense that Schultz has a much higher ceiling due to his stuff. Russ’s stats were good, although he’s on the older side for a prospect. Has anyone seen a write-up of Russ’s stuff circa 2019? I haven’t found any yet.

  3. I’ve been Brogdon all along happy to see him get in.

    Haha Bellman. I went Sanchez here but I have some reservations. The Rays typically don’t let young impact arms get away and they are so good with pitching prospects it makes me wonder.

    I appreciate those that have love for Cole. Makes me kind of long for another Cole however unless he develops a wipe out change up the rest of his stuff will never play up IMO. Great kid.

    I’m intrigued by Baylor I must say. Something about a blank slate with lots of athleticism who hasn’t proven a thing really one way or the other.

    1. God Bless Jhailyn Ortiz for getting $4 million out of the Phillies. A cautionary tale however for scouts all over the world. Don’t fall in love with 16 y/o’s who show up to a BP workout and stand there and put balls over the fence for 30 minutes.

      My opinion he never plays an inning in the MLB. My key stats for him that provide that opinion a 297 and a 295 OBP in LKW and CLW. He just doesn’t have the pitch recognition tool to make it and that’s a hard thing to teach.

      Here is the good news. Whenever I make definitive statements like that I’m usually wrong.

        1. yeah I get 10 emails a day from them. Their data is very intuitive too because they know exactly what games I buy tickets to.

          I rarely buy them in advance. These past few years I just walk up and I always get a great pair and when the wife or sons don’t want to go they always have exceptional singles.

          How far are you from that park?

          1. DMAR…I am below Philly…closest minor league ball park for me is Blue Rocks Park ( Frawley)….which is a Royals affiliate and unfortunately in another A level league….hi A Carolina.
            Always hoped that the Phillies would move out of Lakewood to there or even Camden….before Campbell Field was demolition..

            1. @romus – Frawley Stadium is close to where i work – < 10 mins away. Work is about an hour drive from home due to traffic but he gas price in DE is $0.50 cheaper!!

              REA is closer to me but I'm a more frequent visitor of First Energy Park on summers — watch Blue Claws game then go to the shore after and chill.

              LHV is the best affiliate to move to closer to Philly so the promotions/demotions will be easier. But LHV love them pigs and Philly will cause pain again to LHV folks if they take LHV out. Some LHV are still pissed when the Eagles camps was moved to NovaCare.

              I assume the Lakewood Blue Claws post-game jaunt is Asbury Park.

    2. Agree there…Ortiz is due the big break out.
      Understand his weight is around the 250 area, but with a little more sculpting than 2015 when he signed on. Still has the power tool with a very strong arm for any OF spot. Needs to cut his O-swing% down on breaking balls…perhaps a little more than year out after the laser eye surgery will prove more beneficial.

      Baylor looks like a prospect.

      Speed seems to be best talent. Rated 60 by BaseballSavant and ranked 95.44 percentile in 60-yard dash by Perfect Game USA.

      Arm rated 55. He also was a good pitcher with 92 MPH fastball ranked 98 percentile.

      Described as good hands and athletic enough to probably stick at shortstop.

      He has some power. Exit velocity 98.16 percentile.

      However, BaseballSavant rates his hit tool at just 45.

        In the old days…a decade ago or so and back, management would have made the decision to convert Jamari into a switch-hitter with his acceleration out of the box.
        Glad they realize that analytics has shown that does not always turn out as expected..

  8. Is Ortiz like others a victim of Phillies poor player development? Compare results to Braves and Cardinals and its sad.
