Phils Sign 2 Outfielders

The off season minor league free agent signings have begun with the Phillies adding two outfielders with major league experience to the mix, 30 year old Brian Bogusevic and 29 year old Darin Mastroianni.

Bogusevic was originally a 1st round pick (24th overall) by the Astros in the 2005 draft.  He spent the 2014 season playing in the Marlins organization for AAA New Orleans, hitting .260/.349/.411 in 265 AB’s; with 6HR 33 RBI and 5SB.  Bogusevic last played in the majors for the Cubs in 2013, hitting .273 with 6 homers in 143 AB’s. Primarily a RF, Bogusevic can play all three OF positions.

Mastroianni was the Blue Jays 16th round pick in the 2007 draft and split time last season between the Blue Jays and Twins AAA affiliates.  In 364 AAA AB’s, Mastroianni hit .277/.354.,379 with 5HR 23RBI and 20SB.  Mastroianni has spent parts of the last 4 seasons in the major league, hitting just .212 in 273 major league AB’s.

Certainly nothing here to be overwhelmed by, but competent AAA players if nothing else.

  1. These two signings will have little to do with the future. I am convinced that the only way the Phillies are going to develop by ’16 or ’17 is to trade Hamels. Boston has Betts, Swihart, Owens, Webster, Margot, and Johnson; the Rangers have Gonzalez, Nick William, and Phil Klein. Gillick and Amaro should look at getting a package of those players from either team.

    1. I have a hard time believing the Phillies can develop by ’16 or ’17 better without Hamels than with him. An ace is one of the hardest things for a developing team to add. Hamels should still be in his prime in 2017. I think the prospect yield from a Hamels trade tends to be a bit over-blown and there isn’t enough realization of how much time it takes most players to establish themselves in the big leagues.

          1. Well, the original comment mentioned ’16 or ’17. He’ll be 32 and 33 then. Yes, he could very well still be an ace. Think how long guys like Lee, Halladay, Carlton were aces. Excellent pitchers often can maintain their ability to age 35.

            1. Onre thing to think about…in the last twenty years , the only pitchers to win World Series MVP over thirty that I can think of were Randy Jonhson and Curt Schilling back- to- back with the D’Backs.
Mostly all the pitchers who have won the award were under 32/33-years old.

    2. Wow two minor leaguers. What are we trying to do, get at least one of our minor league teams out of the basement in their respective leagues. Now that is something to really look forward to next season. The minors are void of major league talent for the most part and we sign to more major league rejects.

  2. Why not Dodgers and Cubs also? I am convinced that Cubs want to accelerate their progress and Dodgers reeling from getting bounced

  3. The state of this team demands significant changes to get younger developing players OR expect continuous low ranking through maybe ’18 or ’19 and THAT assumes we’ll be drafting more accurately which is a big assumption. Hamels, et al will be of little value through than. The ol’ vets are ripe for trades because they have SOME value and they are doing this team no good for the present and near future.

And their value is certainly not going to get better; if there is to be a future for this franchise, it will have to come without them.

Now, the object is to obtain prospects who can grow into a competitive team, sooner than later.

    1. That’s correct. The emphasis should be upon trading the older players who are still able to help a contender in 2015. With a nominal top of the rotation of Hamels-Lee-Burnett, you don’t get younger by trading Hamels — you get younger by trading Burnett and when healthy Lee. You get younger by trading Papelbon and at least one of Ruiz/Rollins/Utley. And, you trade Byrd. Those are the guys we are 100% sure aren’t going to be helping us in 2017 and probably not in 2016, either.

      1. Getting younger or getting better?
Trading the aformentioned players of Burnett, Byrd, Chooch may net you one eaxh of a low level long-range tier 2/3 prospects. Lee, Rollins and Utley may get you a tier 1 prospect apiece, but I am inclined to think it only may be a tier 2 prospect
But you do get younger and that’s a start to the rebuild..

        1. That’s the essence of rebuilding. You aren’t trading to get better in 2015 or necessarily even 2016 with all the trades taken together. The goal is to be better in 2017 and beyond.

  4. There’s obviously going to be competition to get Hamels. I mean there’s packages teams can give up in order to acquire him.
BOS: Owens, Webster, Bradley Jr. and Coyle
TEX: Alfaro, Williams, Mazara, and Kela
LAD: Peterson or Puig, Urias, Reed
    CHC: Russel, Edwards, McKinney

Now those are the packages i woukd shoot for, i don;t know how realistic they are but they’re built around 2 quality prospects and 1-2 complementary pieces.

    1. You can shoot for them, you won’t get them. There are two Hamels-quality pitchers on the FA market. They are more appealing by far than any of these deals.

  5. Wow you guys those packages don’t do it for me. You might want to look at his stats again (minus the useless w/l)
Bos: Owens AND swihart AND johnson or marrero
Tex: Gallo AND alfaro AND odor
LAD: Puig would be a coup but I want Seager or Peterson AND reed
Chi: Russell AND almora AND mckinney
    Chi: Soler and russell
These are the deals that we should be considering

      1. I was waiting for your response! I would love that trade, can we do it today? I have a more optimistic view of what we get than you do, or maybe I should say hopeful?, but we are not getting Peterson or Seager. Maybe Betts and Webster. Maybe Russell and Edwards? It will be a trade where we are not blown away, rather one where half the people love it and half hate it.

        1. Actually, my comment was upon reflection a little ill considered. I don’t have time today to really give the proposals due consideration, though (obviously given my initial response) upon first glance they do seem to me to be overly optimistic. (e.g., Soler and Russell is not happening. One maybe headlining a deal but not both. Betts is (and probably should be) essentially untouchable. And so on.)

But that said, not enough times to fairly evaluate some of the other proposals.

          1. Soler Russell one is probably not happening but based on your comment it seems you’re undervaluing Hamels. He’s arguably a top 10 sp who just turned 30. Last I checked not many are available and at 22.5m a year seems to be a slight $ savings for any team considering what primo sp.’s are getting. If you want to trade him just to trade him then I’m glad you’re not running the team but to not ask for 2 top 4 prospects and a top 8-10 isn’t doing the phillies any favors.

  6. Sibs, I like the way you think. I don’t think LA will part with Urias but you have to ask. And, the way I look at it, if the team that we make a deal with doesn’t feel absolutely sick and stressed after pulling this deal: we failed. I aim the feeling we had re: hunter pence/Houston multiplied by 2. I have so little faith in Amaro that I’m not holding breath though.

  7. Has anyone considered if Baltimore might be interested in a “true ace” after getting swept by KC in the ALCS? Maybe we can get a package headlined by Hunter Harvey.
