Gulf Coast Game Report vs Yankees 1, August 27
PITCHING:

Feliberto Sanchez started and pitched into the 6th inning.  He looked good over all but seemed to tire late in the 5th and in the 6th.  At times his fastball seemed overpowering (I would make a wild guess at around 92-93).  He also has an effective change-up.  I think he needs to work on his move to first as a few guys stole second more on him than on Grullon.  Here are his batter-by-batter results:

1st:  0-2 pitch lined into RC for a base hit/Hard liner to CF that Sandberg corralled- it was very breezy and Cord sprinted back too far but then turned and came in to make the catch/weak 4-3 groundout/K looking on fastball on the outside corner
2nd: 2 Hopper, 6-3/Hard hit lineout to Left/pop-up to SS
3rd:  BB/Flyout to shallow LF/Flyout to shallow LF/RBI double that hit the Lf wall/Flyout to shallow LF
4th:  K on high Fastball/4-3 (nice play by Torres going to his left)/Foul popout to first
5th:  K looking/Deep liner over Sandberg’s head in center but he ran back and caught it/hard single into CF/Bunt single (Grullon stumbled or it probably would have been the third out)/Hard ground RBI single between SS and 3B/Walk (after going 0-2, he threw 4 straight pitches outside to a lefty batter)/Settled down and induced a 5-4 FC on an 0-2 pitch with bases loaded
At this point, he would have left the game with a very positive outing, but…
6th: Hard grounder off Hernandez’s glove at 3rd- was ruled an error but could’ve gone either way/4 pitch BB/Sac Bunt, 5-3/Hard 1B down the LF line that scored both runners.
At that point Therrien (formerly known as JDT) came in and threw some gasoline on the fire (though an error by Robinson Torres also contributed).  Therrien only gave up one runner in the 7th.

Lewis Alezones pitched a rocky 8th (1 run with 2 BB’s and a single), and then a scoreless 9th (with another BB and single)

OFFENSE:

Cord Sandberg:
1) Chopper up the middle, 4-3- thought he might beat it off the bat, but he was out by 2 steps.
2) High Bouncer to 2nd, 4-3 but did get an RBI
3) Line RBI single between SS and 3rd.  Knocked in both runs in the game (scoring Hernandez both times)
4) Fooled on a 2-2 change-up, (couldn’t hold up his swing) after hitting a long foul ball down the RF line
Jair Morelos:
1) 5-3 (Hard shot but 3rd baseman made an excellent reflex play as he was in very tight on the grass)
2) Served a nice single the other way into LF
3) Chopper between 1st and 2nd that went for a hit and run single
4) 6-3, defensive swing
Nick Ferdinand:
1) Broken bat, 6-3 groundout
2) 5-3
3) 5-4-3 (with go ahead run on 3rd)
4) Weak popout to SS
Wilmer Oberto:
1) Broken Bat sinking liner caught in RF
2) K’d swinging at a curve (tipped into catcher’s mitt)
3) 6-3
4) Smoked a shot right over the first base bag. It went into the RF corner, but the ball was spinning towards foul territory where the field opens up.  He had a triple but the umpire ruled that the ball went out of play so he had to settle for a 2B.
Robinson Torres:
1) Hard ground single into RF (stole 2nd)
2) Sat back nicely on a curve and doubled off the LF fence
3) Soft popout to RF
4) Good long at bat fouling off a number of pitches, but then ended up popping out to 3rd in foul territory
Deivi Grullon:
1) 5-3, not hit hard
2) 6-3, high chopper
3) Hard ground double over the 3rd base bag
4) High Flyout to shallow RC
Grullon showed a strong arm to 2nd, even though he was 0-3 throwing out would-be base-stealers.  The first two were more off Sanchez (he almost got one of them anyway), and the third one was because Torres didn’t get to the bag quickly enough with the infield in.
Jose Pujols:
1-2) Pujols could not hit the curveball at all and the Yankees knew it.  Between the 1st and 2nd AB, he swung and missed at 4 straight curves (and none were close).  The 5th one was fouled off (barely got the bat on it).  His second AB ended in another swinging K on a 3-2 curve.
3) Bloop caught in Shallow RC
4) In his last AB, he faced a side-winding righty that none of our righty batters could touch (though Oberto, a lefty, did rip the double off him).  I said to my wife, maybe he will throw him a fastball and sure enough- he did.  Pujols hit the fastball off the top of the LF wall for a double.  Nice that he can rip fastballs but he needs to figure out the off-speed stuff or he won’t get far.

Jan Hernandez:
(Hernandez had some family at the game and he got two nice hits for them, plus he scored our only 2 runs).
1) Line single to LC
2) Ripped a fastball for a 2B over the LF’s head.
3) 5-3 groundout- hit pretty well
4) K’d on two straight weak swings at off-speed pitches on the outside corner

  1. I was at this game with friends. We stood behind the players charting pitches. The gun hit 91 once and 90 twice. Most fastballs were at 89. Between innings I glanced at the sheet where the pitches were recorded – most pitches were listed from 90-92. Maybe the gun is off? So I watched the next three pitches – 81, 86, 76. They were charted as 81, 90, 76. I have always been suspicious of the fastball numbers reported down here. Now even more so.
