  1. First, I didn’t want a thread to go by without a comment. It’s not fair to Gregg and I like the the whole idea of the piece. Second, the short season guys don’t get much mention in a piece like this. BA, ERA, WHIP, OBP yes but anything with a straight number in it is hard to achieve. With that said, Zach Green is close on a few categories. He has 11 HRs, like Serritella but I’m sure when the piece was written Zach wasn’t there yet. He also has 19 dbls. That’s closing in on Ruf. It’s pretty impressive that a guy in SS ball is anywhere near the leaders. Also a mention should go to Quinn who still leads in SBs and hasn’t played in nearly 2 months. That’s a short season… the wrong way.

    1. 56 percent of Green’s base hits have been XBH. Everything’s encouraging … aside from that K rate.

      1. Zach Green reminds me a lot of Mark Reynolds. Guys with power who stike-out a lot, but also have good walk rates to go with. They both were SS’s when they were drafted and then moved to 3B. They both have similar size. Reynolds listed as a 6-2/220 Righty bat with Green going 6-3/210 and also a righty.

Their numbers are pretty similar in Low-A. Reynolds played there after being drafted out of college so he was a year older than Green is this year at Low-A. Both put up a BB% of close to 9%, Green is striking out at a higher clip (28.4%) vs Reynolds(23.5%) for the level.

Reynolds turned into a power threat, free-swinger, but he did get on base at a decent clip with walks and gave Arizona a few good seasons.

          1. Well I don’t like going just by fielding % and Range Factor, but the UZR stat(which I like for MLB) isn’t easily calculated for Minor League players because the component stats aren’t released at least not as far as I know for the minor leagues. A stat company called Baseball Info Solutions calculates where a ball is hit based on breaking the field into ‘vectors’ and then having a computer determine where the ball landed/is fielded and applying that… but as far as I know that only happens for the bigs.

            So we have Zach Green
            2012 3B: 31G, .870 fielding%, 2.81 RF/G
            2013 3B: 56G, .915 fielding%, 2.70 RF/G

            Mark Reynolds
            2004 3B: 22G, .879 fielding%, 2.32 RF/G
            2005: 3B: 34G, .872 fielding%, 2.00 RF/G
            Career: 117G, .881 fielding%, 2.27 RF/G
Reynolds was bounced around a bit. His first two years he was played a lot at SS, then moved to mainly 3B(but played some 2B) and then also some games in LF.

Just going by the 1st two seasons I would give Zach Green an edge based on getting to more balls and showed an improvement in fielding between 2012/2013. I think the fact that he isn’t going to be moved around (at least for the next few years) and will stick at 3B could allow him to get more consistency. His range factors seem to be slightly above average so he’s covering good ground.

  2. Gregg, any idea of who could be called up in September to the Phillies? Who might be a contender for a spot on the big league team next year?
