Phillippe Aumont struck out the side in order on 17 pitches, and only 4 of them were called balls. Not sure what that proves, but it’s nice to see. Dom Brown went off in his rehab start for Lakewood – 3-5 with a homer. And 4 GCL Phils went deep, including Cord Sandberg, Jose Pujols and Wilmer Oberto, who happened to drive in 4 runs with his. That’s the second time he’s done that this year. Grand.

why dont vargas and alezones start?

Innings management and control issues.
Vargas is currently 1.5 batters per inning. Right now they are getting him 3-4 IP per trip through the rotation and he is throwing high pitch counts in those innings.
Alezones is 17 years old and they are babying the arm and bringing it along slowly.
Both of them are likely getting a lot of out of game practice and side sessions so I wouldn’t worry too much about their workload (especially Alezones)

I sort of wonder what made them start Vargas in the bullpen, at the same level, to begin with. He was pretty good in the rotation last year. Even though he was a little wild, he wasn’t this wild.

Not much other than his listed age/height/weight and stats. He’s limiting walks which is good. But he’s also 20, so pretty old for the DSL, and not striking out a ton of people, so it’s not like he’s dominating. Looks more like luck. Although he is only 190 lbs. at 6’3″, so I guess there’s room for growth, which could translate to more strikeout stuff. But who knows, really. If he isn’t stateside to begin the next season, we can safely assume he’s a non-prospect I think.
LikeLike
Yeah. I was gonna ask the same thing. He’s striking out more people than he did his first two years. But 20 is on the old side.

This may be wishful thinking, but I suspect there may be more power potential for Crawford than people assume. Not a 30 HR a year guy, but perhaps 20 HR eventually.

Larry….catch likens JP Crawford him to Derek Jeter, who do comp him to? (tic)
LikeLike
Haha, You’ll get no comps from me.
But I will say this – IF we’re going to play the comp game, at least Crawford, so far, SSS, has the kind of numbers that make those kind of comps … at least not down right silly. We’ve been so starved for real prospects, that there is an understandable tendency to engage in pure wishful thinking comps. Now, obviously comping Crawford to Jeter is somewhat in that vein, in that Jeter is going into the HOF, and projecting that for ANY kid in Rookie ball is … presumptuous. But the thing about a 19 year old with those kinds of tools and that kind of start COULD do that.

See, that’s why this whole exercise is silly.
It seems to me that there’s two things you can do with comps. One is illustrative, the “he’s this sort of player.”
The other is, rather than looking at a specific person, is to ask “for this kind of performance, for this level and age, what is the reasonable ceiling?” For “reasonable ceiling” you would exclude true outliers (that’s one of the things that gets me about Utley comps).
By that standard, to go back to yesterday’s discussion, Dugan relevant comps are bench guys and borderline regulars. He COULD be more than that, but the guys who had similar minor league trajectories generally don’t end up quality regulars, and certainly don’t end up as stars. Yes, there are exceptions.
Crawford, on the other hand, given age/level, is performing the way that future stars perform. Now, it’s ALSO true that there are prospects who perform that well at that age/level and DON”T go on to be stars. But that’s the nature of prospects.

But to give you an idea of how high the beta is on these kids, see, e.g., 2005 GCL. Top 4 18 year olds by OPS:
Andrew Mccutchen .842
Tim Kennelly .834
Josh Dean .832
Jay Bruce .831

For the record I’ll totally take a 50/50 chance on JP Crawford if he could be equivalent to McCutchen or Bruce.

My comp is wishful thinking – I’m not making a real comparison between those two players yet. It’s way, way, way too early. But this is a player to dream on and who, if he hits his ceiling, might be that kind of player. How often can we say that about one of our own?

@LarryM. YouTube, JP Crawford’s scouting video under “JP Crawford hits seven homers”. His swing shows an indication that he will hit for power once he fills out.

And we have a little idea that he may fill out a little like his cousin. And cousins are bad comps since they are only 25% similar genes. Isn’t it amazing though how picking in the mid to top of the first round gives you so much more talent than picking in the 30’s. And people wonder why the minors lack depth it is very much linked to their draft position because they are force to get too many lottery tickets that late in the 1st on in the comp rd.

I would expect him and Freddy Zorrilla to be in camp next spring (possibly in the fall for instructs). He is going to have to prove he can hit here, but I would see it is a good chance he plays in the GCL at age 19.

The guy with the team lead in HR’s for the VSL Phillies is listed as 5’6-153(Lucas Rojo). I think I was taller and heavier than that in the 4th/5th grade. He’s 19, but from Brazil and only played 18 games in the VSL last year. .260/.340/.453/.793 He’s only got a 5.2 BB% so how does his OBP get that high? How about getting hit by a pitch *12* times. His HBP% is 5.6%. How does a guy that tiny get hit that often?
I think there’s a few guys from the VSL likely to advance to GCL next year. Those two low six figure signees are possible. Williker Isava(SS) has barely played and is likely injured. Gregori Rivero hasn’t shown much power, but has kept his BA respectable around .260-.270.
I wouldn’t be opposed to seeing the Phillies pull a Yankees and have a GCL Phillies #2 filled up with more VSL/DSL guys getting promoted sooner and seeing if they sink or swim. I think you’d get a better idea of them facing GCL competition than VSL/DSL. Especially the VSL since it’s such a small league.

Who are the top five lefthanded pitching prospects in baseball, with ceiling as the primary consideration?
Jim Kubinski
South Bend, Ind.
The best lefty prospect in baseball isn’t a professional yet. North Carolina State’s Carlos Rodon is the favorite to go No. 1 overall draft, and he looked spectacular in his final Team USA outing of the summer. But he’s not eligible if we only consider pros, and neither are Tony Cingrani, Martin Perez and Tyler Skaggs, all of whom exhausted their prospect eligibility this season.
When I was compiling my top five, the lack of quality lefthanders in the minors became apparent. I like all five of these guys, but a top 10 would have been a stretch:
1. Andrew Heaney, Marlins
Slider and command are his best attributes, owns 34-inning scoreless streak.
2. Max Fried, Padres
Best high school southpaw to come out of the draft since Clayton Kershaw.
3. Henry Owens, Red Sox
Control needs refinement but he gets swings and misses with his fastball, breaking ball, changeup.
4. Danny Hultzen, Mariners
Reclaimed his polish this year but shoulder issues have sidelined him since June 27.
5. Jesse Biddle, Phillies
Not overpowering but misses bats with his fastball and curveball.

I’m ready for Castro to take MiniMart’s spot in Philly as well as Dom taking D Young’s spot. One of the Youngs has to go when Dom comes back tomorrow, it won’t be Ruf or Asche. They could send MiniMart down but someone has to back up CF until Revere comes back.

Probably. It’s a little surprising he’s even pitching at all given how tricky partial tears are in the shoulder.

Jesse Sanchez’ scouting report:
Luis Encarnacion Rank: 12 Bani, Dominican Republic
Ht: 6’2″, Weight: 185
Position: 3B
DOB: 8/9/1997
Bats: R, Throws: R
Scouting Grades* (present/future): Hit: 4/5 | Power: 4/6 | Run: 3/4 | Arm: 5/6 | Field: 4/5
Arguably the best right-handed hitter on the market, Encarnacion has tons of raw power, a short stroke and good balance at the plate. He’s known for spraying line drives all over the field, but he also has home run power, especially to his pull side. Encarnacion has impressed scouts with his ability to square the ball up and make hard contact every time he gets into the batter’s box. However, some wonder if the teen has a true position on defense. For now, Encarnacion is at third base, but that could change in the future.
A regular in the International Prospect League, Encarnacion was a standout at the MLB International Showcase in January, notching four hits in seven at-bats. One of the youngest players on the market, Encarnacion won’t be able to sign until he turns 16 on Aug. 9. Scouts like his makeup, aggressive nature and approach to the game.
