Around the System, Starting Pitching, Lower Half

A look at starting pitching in the lower half of the organization. Next up: Relievers.

Lakewood

Nic Hanson, 21, Phils 16th round pick in 2012 draft; 16 games (10 starts); 2-2 with a 2.49ERA; 1SV; 76IP 77H 12BB 60K; 1HR allowed; 1.26 GO/AO; .260 opp. avg., .261 vs. LH, .259 vs. RH, .277 with RISP; 1.16 WHIP; 1.4BB/7.1K k per 9; 1-1 with a 1.09 ERA in his last 5 starts.  Hanson has pitched very, very well since coming off the DL and is certainly on course for a promotion.

Miguel Nunez, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 21 games (17 starts); 8-7 with a 4.50ERA; 104IP 114H 34BB 56K; 4HR allowed; 0.82GO/AO; .282 opp. avg; .311 vs. LH, .262 vs. RH, .269 with RISP; 1.42WHIP; 2.9BB/4.8K per 9; 6 starts in July; 3-1 with a 3.98ERA. Nunez has done respectable job this year…nothing more, nothing less.

Jon Prosinski, 22, Phils 10th round pick in 2013 draft; 8 starts; 2-1 with a 3.16 ERA; 31.1IP 45H 4BB 24K; 2HR allowed; 1.43 GO/AO; .331 opp. avg; 1.56 WHIP; 1.1BB/6.9K per 9; 1-0 with a 2.40 ERA in 3 starts for Lakewood.  The bottom line has been good but it has been very difficult getting there with opponents hitting him very hard.  The bottom line will inevitably change unless he becomes less hittable quickly.

Jeb Stefan, 23, Phils 22nd round pick in 2012 draft; 29 games (7 starts); 3-5 with a 3.82 ERA; 77.2IP 77H 25BB 72K; 9HR allowed; 0.69 GO/AO; .250 opp. avg; 1.31 WHIP; .292 vs. LH, .219 vs. RH, .244 with RISP; 2.9BB/8.3K per 9; As a starter: 1-1 with a 2.36 ERA in 7 starts. Stefan has really settled in nicely as a starter.

DL: Shane Watson who has been on the DL for the last three plus week and Yoel Mecias who has been on the DL since late June.

Williamsport

Drew Anderson, 19, Phils 21st round pick in 2012 draft; 9 starts; 4-2 with a 2.47 ERA; 47.1IP 38H 14BB 30K; 4HR allowed; 0.86GO/AO; .222 opp. avg; .194 vs. LH, .242 vs. RH, .268 with RISP; 1.10WHIP; 2.6BB/5.7K per nine. Anderson has been consistently very good for the Crosscutters.

Mitch Guellar, 19, Phils 1st round pick in 2012 draft; 8 starts; 3-5 with a 5.63ERA; 32IP 44H 13BB 22K; 4HR allowed; 1.06GO/AO; .333 opp. avg; 1.46WHIP; 2.6BB/6.1K per nine; .318 vs. LH, .341 vs. RH, .256 with RISP; Guellar’s last three starts have been awful, greatly inflating his numbers.  He has been hit around by righties and lefties alike.

Shane Martin, 22, Phils 9th round pick in 2013 draft; 8 games; 2-2 with a 3.58ERA; 37.2IP 36H 9BB 25K; 5HR allowed; 1.93 GO/AO; .245 opp. avg; 1.19WHIP; 2.1BB/5.9K per nine; .333 vs. LH, .208 vs. RH, .295 with RISP; Martin has thrown for WIlliamsport and he is a prime candidate for the double jump to Clearwater in 2014.

Julio Reyes, 22, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 9 games (6 starts); 1-1 with a 4.09ERA; 33IP 21H 17BB 27K; 3HR allowed; 0.89 GO/AO; .183 opp. avg; 1.15whip; 4.6BB/7.3K per nine; .267 vs. LH, .129 vs. RH, .304 with RISP. Reyes has been devastating against righties but the walks have hurt.

Yacksel Rios, 20, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 9 games (4 starts); 2-1 with a 4.44 ERA; 24.1IP 27H 8BB 24K; 1HR allowed; 1.00 GO/AO; .290 opp. avg; 1.43WHIP; 2.9BB/8.9K per Nine.

GCL

Alejandro Arteaga, 19, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 7 games (6 starts); 2-2 with a 3.45ERA; 31.1IP 34H 4BB 24K; 4HR allowed; 0.76GO/AO; .272 opp. avg; 1.21WHIP; 1.1BB/6.8K per Nine; .281 vs. LH, .265 vs. RH, .184 with RISP. Arteaga has been impressive with excellent control.

Ranfi Casimeiro, 21, Signed as a free agent in 2010; 7 starts; 2-3 with a 3.44ERA; 34IP 43H 8BB 19K; 0HR allowed; 1.52GO/AO; .309 opp. avg; 1.50WHIP; 2.1BB/5.0K per nine;

Eineiry Garcia, 18, SIgned as a free agent in 2011; 6 starts; 1-3 with a 5.11ERA; 24.2IP 26H 11BB 17K; 1HR allowed; 1.59 GO/AO; .265 opp. avg; 1.50WHIP; 4.0BB/6.2K per nine; Mediocrity thus far, but that is to be expected from the 18 year old, in the states for the first time.

Feliberto Sanchez, 19, Signed as a free agent in 2011; 7 games (6 starts); 2-2 with a 3.60ERA; 30IP 30H 13BB 16K; 0HR allowed; 0.53 GO/AO; .268 opp. avg; 1.43WHIP; 4.3BB/5.3K per nine.

  1. Hard to believe Miguel Nunez and Yaksel Rios are both only 20 years old. They seem like they have been around forever.

  2. what about the Aussie from Surfers Paradise. Any kinda chance that kid can be stand out prospect material in the future. Is he just going through some growing pains because of the inferior competition he saw down under. or ……

  3. not that it makes any difference, but yackie was a ’11 fairly early draft choice i think. happy to see he is progressing.
