  1. With all 3 Lakewood OFs young and not showing a reason to promote, what will they do next year? Need room for Cozens. Does Poynter or Greene get moved up to Clearwater based on age (Note- Tocci has been going great for a 17 year old, I realize that.. but obiously he needs more time)

    1. Larry Greene hitting .321/392/429 the last 30 games. As long as he doesn’t revert back to his April and May numbers, he’ll be promoted.

      1. Agree. I could also see promoting Pointer as well, just to create a space if one is needed. Of the top of my head, Cozens aside, I don’t see who else would get the nod. Tromp maybe, though I am clueless about him beyond the numbers.

      2. Problem even when he’s been hot his ISO is only .108. Not good when your calling card is your power.

    2. I think all 3 could definitely get promoted. We’ve seen the Phils bump up players who haven’t had stellar seasons before (Ethan Stewart and Kyrell Hudson come to mind). Also, Greene and Pointer aren’t really young for Lakewood- Pointer is actually a little old. As VOR points out, Greene is hitting better lately.

  2. Jiandido Tromp quietly hitting as well as anyone at Williamsport, in SSS. Has he injured a couple times? He has a couple instances where he didn’t play for 5 days in a row.

    1. He’s stuck in a three-man rotation for a spot in left field. With Knapp and Lino both hitting well, Knapp has to stay in the DH spot (since he can’t catch right now), so Nelson Prada is only getting to play one of the group of Tromp, Justin Parr and Samuel Hiciano per day. He’s not sitting Cozens anytime soon for more than a day here and there and they really like Gustavo Martinez in center field, so he’ll be in there most days.

Tromp is doing a good job of playing his way into the lineup at this point. He’s kind of forcing the teams hand by playing well enough that they have to play him. He plays great defense (although I haven’t seen him throw in game situations much). He’s very comparable to Martinez in center field. They both glide to the ball and cover a lot of ground with what seems like very little effort. And for a little guy, Tromp really does pack a punch in his swing. He saw 29 pitches in 5 PAs in Sunday’s extra-inning win.

      1. Thanks for the information. Tromp has interested me since they signed him. I’m kind of surprised he isn’t one of the teams’ priorities. He received a decent bonus, and is only 19, and seems to have enough upside to be considered a prospect.

        1. He was my breakout guy to start the season. I really liked what I saw from him in a limited time last year. I think he’s going to eventually play himself into a 4 or 5 days a week kind of role. He’s on his way to doing that now with Parr and Hiciano struggling, especially if they stay in the hunt.

      2. From what I saw in Aberdeen a few weekends ago, I concur with the statement that Tromp glides to the ball. Caught one on the run back to the fence, full speed to his left. Made it look easy…

  3. I’ll bet the mortgage Tocci repeats at Lakewood. At this point as far as placements are concerned for next year these guys are all going to move up to the next level. I see one candidate for a double jump and that is Knapp.

There are a dearth of spots available so we should see some names move out of the system all together.

    1. If Tocci puts on weight in the off-season and looks good in spring training, I could absolutely see the team starting him at Clearwater.

        1. Oh, agreed. I’m on record as skeptical that it’ll ever happen for him.

You could also look at Freddy Galvis as a comparable; despite not really hitting at any point in the low minors, he was pushed up a level every year. Both big makeup guys, strong defenders, etc.

          1. Galvis is probably the best comp in terms of recent Phillies prospects. Plus defense (or better) and very similar, but slightly better stats at LWD for Galvis (though a year older at the time).

      1. I wouldn’t move him up to Clearwater next year unless he progressed phyiscally quite a bit. He’s stil going to be incredibly young for that level next year.

  4. I think you went back a day too far. This is the second thread we’ve had on the july 20th box scores and yesterday was the 21st. Damn dont u just hate mondays.

  5. with that said… good outings by Garner and Hanson yesterday. Lino with a big day at the plate

  6. There’s no reason whatsoever to rush Tocci, until Sandberg catches up to him. Larry Greene and Cozens should be promoted. Once we see what the Clearwater outfielders do with double A pitching, we’ll have a much better sense of overall depth.

Dugan is another candidate for aggressive promotion and fall ball. I guess there’s no hurry to promote him to Lehigh Valley, but has adjusted to AA pitching and is suddenly not too far away. With outfielders and bats in short supply on the big club, Dugan could become an option halfway through next season.

Interesting idea about double-jumping Knapp, but would you really move him past Lino, who is hitting better and starting more games behind the plate? A few of our catchers could be candidates for fall and winter leagues, so maybe that will determine who goes where. Assuming they’re all healthy, Sweaney, Knapp and Lino should catch as many games as possible.

Why hasn’t Susdorf been tried as a lefty platoon partner in the majors?

    1. Better question is why hasn’t Laynce Nix been tried in a platoon? The scientific mysteries of the platoon elude Sir Charlie.

      1. I have heard a few reports about Nix and his unwillingness to do some of the finer things required by a professional. Like film study on pitchers to sum it up not a great pregame work ethic.

        1. ouch. i never heard that before, but given how horrible he’s been the last few months, i’m not surprised.

        2. I’m skeptical. Even if he thought film study etc. was a waste of time, if he thought it would get him into the lineup, he’d probably be doing it.

      1. looks like he is a fairly big kid. doesnt look like the beanpole i had imagined from his stats. Looks like he has a 3/4 or a little lower arm slot. Ball seems to jump out of his hand. It can be hard to control mechanics like that, but it can be deadly on right handed hitters. Slider looked a bit inconsistent from that video, but when he got it right, it looked like he could throw one that really cut all the way across the zone and another that had a wicked little snap at the end. Without speed on all the pitches, i couldnt tell if he was throwing a change or not, but that will go a long way towards battling lefties. All of his pitches looked like they had a good amount of movement on them. Fastball looked like he could cut it or run it back in on the hands. Overall im impressed.

  7. Looks physically undeveloped for age 20; I wonder whether x-rays might reveal room for growth. Also wonder whether his mechanics are physically sustainable, because deception could contribute to his success. Has he taken on some weight in the past several years? B-ref lists him at 6’1″ 153.

78 mph is pretty slow for a slider. I worry whether it’s dropping into slurvvy territory. Lidge’s wipeout slider came in around high 70s-low 80s, but that was after his dip in FB velocity. Its hard enough to be effective if he controls it well, but it depends on its depth and movement in relation to his other pitches.

I like what I see, especially considering he wasn’t an expensive signing…but isn’t Latin America full of smallish right-handers who don’t throw particularly hard? If so, the org should have more guys like him. Do you sign guys like this hoping they develop better velocity with physical maturity? Or are you hoping he learns to throw strikes and improves command of his secondary pitches? Obviously both, in addition to several other factors, but I’m curious how projection works on these types of international signings vs American high school pitchers.

Sev’s arm angle is really the story here. Is he consistently 3/4 or does he drop for some pitches? Pedro could throw any pitch from any angle, which kept hitters guessing. Severino’s 3/4 angle certainly gives him a lot of movement, even to the point of making his primary fastball somewhat of a cutter. The lower arm angle also adds depth to his slider. I wonder whether Severino’s somewhat modest FB velocity is due to his lower arm angle – maybe he sacrifices speed for movement.

  9. thanks for that video evan. as he fills out he might make it. just look at the comparison. after watching harvey yesterday and how the ball just flows out of his hand with not much effort and the effort seve puts into his pitches, what a difference. i think harvey has 5-6 years on seve so i hope with added weight and experience he can throw 75% of what harvey has and i’d be happy.

Threshers no-hit by Angel Sanchez of the Dodgers org. .

Valle hit another 2 hr tonight. Thats his 2nd two hr game since his bat was ripped here less than a week ago.

    1. It would be awesome if Valle can become a power hitter. Even better if can show some ability to walk. He does appear solid defensively as a catcher and has been slowly promoted to help confidence in his defense. But he really has failed to develop much as he raised in levels with the bat. I doubt he’d given you anything more than Kratz who is cheap for the next few years.
