Tyson Gillies went deep for the second straight day. Zach Miner struck out 8 of the 18 men he faced. Less than impressive from Jesse Biddle. He did strike out 6, but he gave up 6 runs, (5 earned), 7 hits, 3 walks and a homerun in 4 innings. For what it’s worth, he was also 2 for 2 at the plate with his third double of the year. He’s hitting .556 on the year.
Cesar Hernandez stole his 15th base, and Roman Quinn his 24th. Both men could probably beat me in a footrace. Probably. I’m probably like a 65 runner. In that I can probably run flat out for around 65 yards without having a cardiac event. Probably.

# 75 then end of the year #50.
290/350/530 with 26 homers in a pitcher friendly league from a 20 year old with above avg. defense would be hard to ignore.

Quinn continues to impress me with his resiliency. Like Franco last year, he had early struggles but stuck with it and started to turn it around (although Franco’s lasted into June last year). Even when he boots three or four plays at SS, he doesn’t seem to let it affect him at the plate. He’s still on a pace to steal at least 50 bases, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he got his average into the .280-.290 range by year’s end.
I feel very similarly about Carlos Tocci, although the signs of a turnaround aren’t as apparent. He’s 17 and hanging in like a champ. Good for him.
Good to see a healthy Gillies starting to put some good games together in Reading. FWIW: His Eastern League OPS right now stands at .666. Maybe he should walk out to some Iron Maiden during his next home game. 🙂

Someone explain to me why Cezar is not playing 2nd base for the Phillies ,freeing up Galvis to do what he does. Watching the Young brother is aging me . I feel 72

Ricky Romero says this morning…..among many faults, Phillies do not walk, swing at too many first pitches.

Watching this team is just making me feel older too. I am really getting to the point , and I love the Phillies, that I rather do something else, then waste my time Rooting, for this team, who couldn’t care less about us. If this ownership cared, Amaro would be gone, Look at the team he put together. terrible.

Not a super serious question, but does anyone know if Biddle is really good with the bat, or if this is just a SSS type aberration?
I’m not saying the guy will hit .260 in the majors, but there’s always some extra value if they guy can be a .180-.210 type hitter – i.e. a cliff lee type guy.

Based on his professional SSS, he would be ideally profiled as a first baseman, with his size. He could hit at GA but heck that’s high school in the Inter-AC, but then again Ben Davis played in that league at one time with Malvern.

GFS, not GA!!!!!!!!! Friends League.
And he could hit at GFS, playing 1B when not pitching.

Sorry correct about that school.

Thanks for the info – but like you’re alluding to, there are probably a ton of guys who could hit well in HS that are now batting .030 in the majors. I guess it’s one of those things we’ll just have to keep an eye on as he progresses.

Well, a lot of it is losing developmental opportunities to improve your hitting, when you are a pitcher in the minors. You don’t get many in-game chances and your instruction is focused on pitching. Who knows what sort of hitters Jiwan James and Savery could have become if they had started their professional career as position players. Both showed enough after the time lost to pitching to wonder what might have been.

Hand injury. He wasn’t exactly hitting up a storm before the injury, however. I’m afraid that Ruf’s chance may have passed him by. Like Rizzotti after his great offensive season in minors, Ruf had to come to ST and make a strong case for himself. Unlike Rizzotti, he did arrive in great physical condition, but like Rizzotti he just didn’t play well. So, to AAA and a slow start to the season and now a nagging injury. College guys who are old for their level and who are not great defensively need to really bring their A offensive game when they find themselves in a chance to turn themselves into serious prospects/major leaguers. There isn’t always a second opportunity.

His chance is coming. This team is two painful months away from another partial firesale like last year. I’m getting the feeling Papelbon is the most likely to net the Phils something substantial in return with a few teams very desperate for a closer and he’s having a great season and brings postseason cred. At this point, Ruiz is having the kind of year that would almost make it pointless to trade him. Not only would they not get much in return, it probably won’t take much to resign him at this point which I think they should. Back to Ruf, as soon as he hits a hot streak at AAA, he’ll get the call up if Delmon is continuing to struggle and it looks like the Phils are out of it. I also believe they’ll trade Rollins or Utley so that Freddy can play every day late this season and going forward. I’d rather it be Rollins at this point and see them resign Chase.

I believe Rollins can veto a trade this year. not sure. But if so, maybe the A’s or Giants could be enticing for him since he will be going home to his parents and relatives. You may be able to get Choice, OF, from the As.

I am having a hard time figuring why either Oakland (or San Fran) would want Rollins much less why they would give up Choice for him. Sogard or Lowrie would really have to go into the tank or get hurt and they still probably have better options than Rollins in their own system.

As big fan of both the A’s and the Phillies, I can tell you that the A’s would definitely have interest in Rollings. Lowrie has played poorly in the field at SS and they would prefer him to be the everyday 2b. Adam Rosales and Eric Sogard are both better suited as backup guys, so Rollins would fit perfectly.
That being said, I would be shocked if they gave up M. Choice. The A’s OF is packed this year, but next year Choice could very well see significant time.

Yes as a “10 and 5” player Rollins has a full no trade clause. Any player with 10 years in the league and a least 5 on his current team gets this as part of MLB’s deal with the union.
