I miss a day and they demote Tyson Gillies to AA. Someone said the other day that the club had retooled his swing this year to try to find a little more power. Not working yet. If they tinkered with Maikel Franco’s swing, that’s been working just fine. He hit his 6th homerun tonight. Dude’s mashing.
On a side note, my nephew, all of eight years old, throws hard enough to hurt my hand playing catch. In his game today, he couldn’t find his batting gloves, and then couldn’t find the bat he wanted to use, so he said “I’ll just grab a different one”. He did so, and then he drew a base on balls. A triumph over adversity. One of his teammates was sitting in the dugout facing away from the game and responded to his coach’s inspirational encouragement, (like “WE’RE STILL IN THIS!!!!”), with sarcastic negativity, (like “NO WE’RE NOT!!!!”). Also in this game, the other team pinch ran for someone because, as I swear to god the coach yelled across the diamond to my nephew’s coach to explain, the young man had to “take a dump”. Not embarrassing for that kid at all. Well done, coach.

Everything except Franco’s game today made me sad

19 BBs amongst Phillies’ minor league starters tonight. Waterboard me. Please.

32 BBs in all. My general statement is walks will kill you but in this case, BBs will make you fall asleep. It’s easy for the opposing coach. I’m sure they told every hitter, don’t you dare swing until you have a strike on you. And the strike never came.

The amount of k’s on all levels is really alarming. No clue at the plate.

Franco and Altherr continue to dominate. Clearwater has three of the top five players in OPS in the FSL (Altherr, Franco and Perkins). Franco, Altherr and Perkins are 1-2-3 in doubles, and Franco has more HR than everybody except uber-prospect Miguel Sano. Truly impressive.
It’s strange that Biddle could have such a lack of control on Saturday after being so dominant the previous two starts. I hope everything’s OK.
Just a quick note on Larry Greene: The Saturday box score has to be one of the more embarrassing I’ve seen. 0-4 with 3 Ks. OK, we’re coming to expect something like this. But two throwing errors? From LEFT FIELD? He has 4 errors on the year. He’s got a .789 fielding percentage in 14 games out there this year. He’s booting EIGHT OF TEN plays in a corner outfield position! His body was promoted to Lakewood, but I think they forgot to include his head.

That’s two of ten plays being booted, of course.

Wondering if both outfielders Altherr and Perkins could be mid-season promotes. Have they ever done that before?

Dont worry, Gillies can take one of those spots.

It’s probably too early to give up on Larry Greene, but the fact that so far he looks to be completely outmatched at low A ball (Lakewood) is VERY troubling.

No, he’s booting 2 of 10 plays, but that is bad enough. I think officially time to be very worried about LGJ. Two seasons in a row arriving out of shape and power yet to arrive. This isn’t a slender, big-boned guy who can add mass to add power. He’s at least as big as he ought to be, probably still a little too big. All he has to look forward to in terms of improving his power are more power-friendly parks in Reading and Allentown, but those parks come with better pitching. Other than walking a lot, he has shown very little to justify being drafted as high as we picked him.

amazing you got that all from a box score

They might need to cut the cords with Tyson Gillies after this season. The fact that Altherr and Perkins are progressing takes some of the sting out of it.

Gillies is out of options after this year so he either has to be a major leaguer or he will be subject to waivers when they use his 40 man spot for another player

I like that you said “when” not “if”.

Oh hey, my reply makes very little sense. Oh well.

Following the farm has not been very rewarding so far this year.
Altherr now has 13 Ks and 2 BBs in his last 10 games, but he’s still managed to hit pretty well. He’s sporting a .711 slugging% in that time. Do you wait and see if he can get the Ks and walks back in order, or promote him soon because he’s bludgeoning the pitchers he’s seeing?

I doubt he moves up until the short season leagues start play. This year is way out of line with his past performance and the Phillies should give him more than the less than 40 days he’s had at this level.

The way things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if Gillies loses his 40-man roster slot later this week. Adam Morgan is the most likely replacement for Halladay in the rotation (sigh), and guys like Savery and Robles are pitching fairly well. Rosenberg and Cloyd are probably safe because (gulp) they could need even more starting pitching depth before the season is over. Gillies and JC Ramirez both seem like possible waiver candidates. But Gillies clearly seems like he’s fallen out of favor, and he’s not even playing center in Reading.

We don’t need a 40-man roster spot to bring up Morgan, the roster stands at 39. Depending how long Halladay is DLed, it could stay at 39, even with Morgan coming up, although I guess they’ll be optimistic and start with the 15 day. Shoulder injuries are tough. Halladay said just some soreness, but he didn’t pitch like it was just a little soreness.

JC Ramirez hasn’t been on the 40 man roster for awhile now.
Cloyd is the most logical guy to remove from the 40 man, if they want to place Adam Morgan on the roster. If Cloyd isn’t good enough to be the call up, with two starters on the DL, then he is not much of a loss, if he is claimed. I’m not sure there would be a big waiting list to claim Cloyd. I think Savery, being a LH reliever, would get more interest.
Gillies will get removed from the 40 man at the end of the year, so they can protect Altherr.

They do not have to remove anyone from the 40…they are currently at 39.

For those wondering, they gained a spot when they DFA’d Carrerra (Ruiz took Quintero’s spot)

Ah, forgot about Carerra. Murphy tweeted “DL is inevitable. Sounds like they need to make a 40 man roster move.” So I assumed it was full. I do think Gillies stands a good chance of being the one to go next time they have to make a 40-man move.

Tocci up over .220 in Lakewood. Looking more and more like he might stick at this level for the year. If he does, it will be interesting to see if he repeats next year or goes to Clearwater.

I’m a Tocci believer, but I believe they will move Tocci to Williamsport when the SS starts. I believe that was the plan all along.

The organization would prefer he sticks at Lakewood, but the decision won’t be made until next month.
