Kinda disappointed Brady is here, but very disappointed LGJ isn’t.

Yeah, Brady to A+ seemed very reasonable from how he fared last year. Maybe something we don’t know or just they didn’t feel like there was room to move him up.
As for LGj, has there been any official word on his physical condition, or has anyone seem him? Wondering if he’s out of shape again or if they are maybe just not satisfied with his defensive progress. Either way, repeating the NYPL would be a really bad sign. Let’s hope he’s in Lakewood shortly.

There were reported weights just prior to ST and he was really hefty. Not starting his second full season after signing at Lakewood is a black mark.

I have it on good authority that he came in out of shape carrying an extra 10-15 lbs of bad weight. Also he had a child this offseason so that could have affected this as well. The feeling around camp is they want him to get work in the OF and get in shape before sending him to Lakewood.

Unfortunate he hasn’t lost the baby weight yet. Let’s hope he doesn’t get pregnant again anytime soon.

his body looks awful in gkitas videos

saw him at the minor league camp for the first time last week so i can’t make a comparison to last year but he is built like a redwood stump. wide from his shoulders to his feet. he looked like he could easily benefit from losing 15-20 pounds.

Was at camp all week:
Saw LGJ on tuesday for bp, did not look out of shape at all, sprays ball all over with top spin. Hits it hard, much life from teammates when he is in the box. Henderson was there watching him.
Cousins is a big boy!
Joseph is a stud! Big dude.
Dyoung is running poorly, hitting the same. Tocci looks smooth, but Thin!
Quinn looks very young, dnp the day i was there. Hernandez threw pretty good, just rusty.

Thanks for that. It’s good to get another perspective on LGJ, since it’s all been bad news thus far.

Cozen. That’s a name I’d love to see on this roster. Maybe mid-season?

So if Tocci sticks at Lakewood for the full season, plays a solid CF, and hits 275, 300 obp, 325 slugging pct, and has an avg k rate, I assume that would be a pretty killer season for a 17 year old at this level? Would it get him to a top 100 prospect? 150? Not even close?

I would expect the OBP to be higher if he hits that high (he has a good sense at the plate and low-A pitchers don’t have the command to just give him strikes). He would definitely be a Top 100 prospect, but a lot of the hesitancy is whether he will have enough power to not have the bat knocked out of his hand by premium velocity.

With a line like that (even with a better OBP) I’d think it be hard to put him in the top 100 until he develops at least a little power. The OBP would continue to drop as he faces better pitching unless he develops the power. I am not saying he couldn’t develop into a top 100 prospect but I think low A with no power is still a long way to go.

Looking at the assignments at Lakewood
The biggest positives:
1. Carlos Tocci
2. Shane Watson
3. Yoel Mecias
4. Miguel Nunez
The biggest disappointments:
1. Larry Greene Jr not making roster
2. Kevin Brady not making Clearwater
3. Gabriel Lino not making the roster
4. Franklyn Vargas and Mitch Gueller held back

Gueller and Vargas weren’t ready, both will be 19 going to Williamsport. I realize it is nice to see them pushed but this doesn’t hurt their prospect status. Both have large command issues and extra time in spring will help. I have no clue what is up with Lino and I think Brady should ahve gone to CLW.

Yeah but it appears Brady will start opening day!!!

Well I just hope Brady takes it as a challenge and pushes the issue with his performance. If he performs like he did last year how long do you think it would take before they promote him? Would it take to mid June/July or would they be willing to do it in mid/end of May?

Actually Vargas will only be 18 for the entire season, so disappointment is the wrong word to use for his situation. He pitched so well last year I thought he had a chance, but they are probably protecting his arm a bit.
A bigger disappointment probably is Kevin Walter, who pitched in the work group. Drafted in 2010, and he still only pitched a few innings. I would have thought he would have a better chance than Nunez, to make the team.

I’m assuming lino will be on the clearwater roster

I’m not. They have Ludy, who stayed in the group while Lino was put in the EXT group. We’ll see what they do with him. Maybe they want to work on something with his hit tool, which needs work.

With the glut of catchers in the system right now, it makes sense to take the young, raw guy aside for further instruction. It’s not going to hurt his development. I’m on board with this.

Probably moore 2

And Stumpo for a third catcher at CLW? Very possible.

I show 32 possibles for CWater 25 man roster so 7 guys have to be cut from my list. I don’t expect 3 catchers at CWater, I just expect Ludy and Moore. Also, if Perkins got moved up there, it was probably at the expense of Alvarez and Stassi. On the ptching side, did Rojas and Broussard go up or down? If they went up, at whose expense? Did Shreve simply go down or out? Paulino out?

Saw on another website that Numata will be the starter and Carman on the bench at catcher. Having a hard time getting my head around that one based on the numbers from last year. Numata is OK behind the plate but did not impress at the plate.

Carman is 3 years older and played at a lower level than Numata last year. Just seems like the guy with the higher upside will be getting the bulk of the playing time.

Carman played at the lower level because he wasn’t drafted until June. Numata was already with the organization and had already been assigned before Carman showed up. They just hope that in three years that Numata will be as good as Carman is now. Carman earned two Rawlings Gold Gloves and had 1 error in two years behind the plate his last two years in college.

Have to agree with anonymous. Numata was in the GCL in 2010 and 2011, and short A in Williamsport in 2012. I know he broke his hand in 2011, but he still started back in the GCL two years in a row. A .235 career average in the GCL and Williamsport is nothing to write home to momma about IMO.

With all of the discussion about Larry Greene and why he did not make the Lakewood opening day roster, not much has been made about Kevin Brady and his placement. The Lakewood pitching rotation has been posted on blueclawsblog. Kevin Brady is the Lakewood #4 starter. Jordan Guth is the opening day starter. Many had Kevin Brady as a sure starter alongside Hoby Milner, at Clearwater. Now Brady is seemingly behind Guth, in low A. Strange.
