Hot or Not, Final Edition

The last Hot or Not for the 2012 season….lets get at it.

–Is there anymore more to say about Darin Ruf.  Put simply, he could not have had a better year at the plate.  If for no other reason than to prevent a Ryne Sandberg type mistake (and no,I am not comparing Ruf to a Hall of Famer), the Phillies need to see what they have against major league pitching.  There is no downside for the seasons final month. He needs to be in Philly.

–Brian Pointer ranks high on the 2012 disappointment list. Such a pretty swing that just can’t make contact.

–Hoby Milner is opening eyes at Lakewood making it pretty clear he is ready for a jump to High A in 2013.

–Very nice to see Trevor May have an outstanding outing after really struggling for quite awhile.

–Ethan Martin joins the not hot list after some fairly significant control issues, while Brody Colvin remains consistently “not hot”.

–Kyle Simon has opened eyes in the organization since the Thome trade and appears to be a legit prospect who could help the Phillies in 2014 in the middle to late innings.  His work against very good competition in the AFL will be something to watch closely.

  1. It looks like Carmona has finally caught up to higher level pitching.In2013 could start in Lakewood with a look toward Clearwater if the gains hold. Logan Moore is a good defensive catcher. He needs to keep developing that .538 so he can join the burgeoning ranks of catcher prospects..

  2. First there were “Truthers”, then “Birthers”, and now…
I sense there are “Rufers” in our midst.

  3. I agree, there’s really no downside to calling him up and giving him some of Wiggington’s at bats. Worse thing that can happen is we don’t claw back to .500.

  4. I was wondering how Gabe Lino shot to the dark side. He was hitting the cover off the ball. I see he’s still hitting .333 in his last 10 but in his last 5, over the last week have been weak.

  5. One could consider renaming this list “Darin Ruf or Brody Colvin.” Colvin should have been left in Clearwater, where he’d finally been putting something together.

Ruf is like the guy with professional experience who retires and spends his time torturing fat guys in knee braces in slow-pitch softball leagues. It’s just not fair.

  6. First of all, I don’t really feel strongly one way or the other about calling Ruf up. But as for the “no downside” comment … this is based on my admittedly imperfect knowledge of the rules regarding the 40 man, but, IF I understand it correctly, if the Phillies put him on the 40 man now, and then decide they need that spot for another player in the off season to protect that player from the rule 5 draft, they can lose Ruf to a team claiming him WITHOUT that team having to keep him on the 25 man all year, a la rule 5. In other words, unless the the Phillies are SURE they are going to protect him from the rule 5 draft, they take some risk putting him on the 40 man now.

That is, if I understand the rules correctly. Even then, obviously if they are SURE they are going to put him on the 40 man, I guess then no reason not to bring him up for a look see.

BTW, the 40 man and the rule 5 draft is the biggest reason why Asche will not, and should not, be brought up this September.

    1. I was a big supporter of calling him up in September to see what they had prior to the Rule 5 next season until I learned this was the case. No way I call him up now. Let him play LF in Venezuela, bring him to spring training and give him a tryout then.

    2. This has been the main sticking point. To call him up and put him on the 40 man is to commit to him, by doing that you are saying that you want to protect him from the Rule V draft and that you see him filling some role on the team going forward. I think the Phillies see him being a part of the team next year either on the 25 man roster or being the first call up from AAA on an injury. I don’t see any reason why a team like the Astros, Orioles, or Mariners who have a hole at 1B or DH wouldn’t take a look at him (especially the Astros who could have him keep Singleton’s seat warm and move him to DH as well). I think the team gives him a year on the 40 man to prove something and chucks him aside if he can’t.

Agree on the Asche thing, there is no reason for the Phillies to give a 40 man spot to anyone that does not need to be protected from the Rule V or cannot be easily DFA’d later with no real consequences. This means players like Pridie and Orr are ahead of “prospects” on the call up list because they can be chucked to the side later to use that spot on protecting the whole host of guys they need to protect.

      1. Yeah, I guess at this point they have to assume that they are going to lose him if they don’t protect him in rule 5, so maybe just take the plunge now, put him on the 40 man and keep him there. If I recall earlier discussions, that would mean risking losing another decent prospect to rule 5.

        1. I guess your right, there is some potential downside. The downside is that the the team may have to make a big 40-man roster decision sooner then they’d like too, the upside is they’ll get some more info on if he has a potential role here long term. It’ll be interesting to see which way they go.

          1. There’s a spot right now after Hector Luna was outrighted and opted for FA, so no immediate issue adding him other than Reading is likely going to be in the playoffs for another week +.

  7. Phils have 1 spot open on 40 man roster. If they put Ruf on it (40man) then that indicates he will be in the mix for the team next year, If Im not mistaken – the Phils have to protect him or expose him to rule 5 draft. He would be taken quickly if exposed to it. Lets see if a Polanco, Wiggington, or Peirre is traded today. I would love for Peirre to be back for next year, as he would be a better fit for CF over Bourne – but Ruf could be the LF or bench player (1B, PH, LF) for next year. If he doesnt start though he is most likely headed to AAA for regular at bats. Manual loves hitters and hitters with power, look for Ruf to play and play often.

    1. Don’t be deceived by Pierre’s speed, it does not translate to the field. He is below average defensive LF ad would be a disaster in CF.

      1. Heck if Pierre went back to the warning track in CF to get a ball he would never be able to throw it back to the infield…

  8. The Phils simply don’t have that many hard decisions to make this year regarding the off-season 40 man roster. Finding room for Cloyd and Ruf, your bottom slots need to get sorted out among guys like Herndon, Ramirez, Martinez, James, Savery and Hudson. I can’t picture any of them being picked up but if hey did …. Next year is a different matter. There will be real competition among worthy prospects.
