Other Stuff

The Phillies announced who will be participating in the Arizona Fall League and because I am very time constrained…here you have it:

Pitchers: Tyler Knigge, Jay Johnson, Colby Shreve, and Kyle Simon

3B: Cody Asche; C: Tommy Joseph; OF: Zach Collier

Have at it…should provide some interesting conversation come October and November.

Tyler Kniggie has explosive stuff, I’m glad to see he is being sent to the AFL, as I’ve noted before his fastball was in the upper 90’s and has crossed the 100 barrier a few times, he had huge problems with control, since the minor league coordinators have been in Reading, his velocity has come down more to a 95-98 range but his control has gotten much better.

Looking at the team roster, Collier should get plenty of playing time, if the Reds are set on moving Hamilton to CF it could push Collier to a corner, but defense isn’t his problem he needs to keep getting ABs so that doesn’t affect him too much. Asche will put up video game numbers when it goes to batting average, we won’t learn a ton but it will be nice for him to get ABs. Joseph’s power will play up in the desert but he is behind Zunino on the depth chart.

  5. I’ll admit it … I come to this site every morning, have religiously checked box scores for years, and yet — I had to look up Jay Johnson. Because I had no idea who he was.

    1. Johnson is a Canadian they signed 2 years ago I believe. Had a ton of promise but had major arm problems. Tried to latch on to several teams but all were scared off by his injuries. His manager who was friends with Gillick pulled some strings and managed a private workout for the team. They were impressed and signed him as an undrafted FA.

      1. Jay Johnson is my favorite underdog in the system. The guy almost had to beg to get someone to let him pitch for them. Then he gets triple jumped, to start the season at Reading, this year.

        1. I think he has a good mix of swing and miss stuff that would make him an ideal LOOGY. But then he also has an arm that is incredibly fragile. I was really surprised he went all the way to Reading too. Maybe they figure there are only so many pitches in his arm and since he had higher level stuff they might as well see sooner rather than later whether he could handle the upper levels of the system.

    1. He’s an outfielder known for being an All-Star practical joker. Good pinch hitter, fairly decent fielder. Nice fifth outfielder to have on a team. Oh wait…

  8. His name being here kinda shocked me as well I’ve seen him play several times this year but there is nothing overly impressive about him avg stuff, may e only cause he’s a lefty?

  9. Johnson has decent K totals and is Canadian, and age appropriate for Reading. I’ve been following him in the box scores this season but he hasn’t been super impressive. Clearly he needs to work on his control.

  10. Sometimes teams just send a warm body to fill out the roster. It doesn’t make him a prospect.

    I was expecting JDF to pick up the innings he lost to injury; his absence here suggests to me we’ll see him in Philly next week.

      1. Define “concerned about.” Three of the four guys they sent last year (Cloyd, Rosenberg, Diekman) pitched in the big leagues this year.

        1. My guess is that “concerned about” means guys whose innings totals they would want to limit. “Prize” arms like Biddle and to a lesser extent May they would probably want to have rest over the winter

          1. I was thinking in this case he meant they didn’t want the possibility of him hurting his arm again in the AFL. But I could be wrong.

  14. I was wondering about johnson too. quess the reason is he is lefthanded.which helps, and his strikeouts are good, maybe he has a chance they feel to be a bastardo type

  15. I read that Cody Asche hit a ball in batting practice last week so hard that it traveled from Reading to Arizona on a fly…

    1. I heard that David Wright is looking to avoid a long-term contract with New York, afraid of Cody Asche making him look old and frail in a few years.
