ICYMI – Phillippe Aumont Called Up

Word came after last night’s game that Jeremy Horst had been placed on the Paternity List and replaced on the active roster by Phillippe Aumont. Paternity time allows for no more than 3 days on the list, so Aumont might have only the rest of the Reds series to make his mark before going back down to Lehigh Valley.

For the season in AAA, Aumont’s sits just shy of 12 k/9, and a fair 0.61 HR/9, with a quite bad 6.9 bb/9 and 1.53 WHIP.  He has given up exactly 34 walks and 34 hits.  Cleary he misses a lot of bats…just so happens batters don’t swing as much as he’d like at balls outside the strike zone.

  1. Yeah, he misses a lot of catchers, too. I’d love to see the stats on wild pitches and passed balls, but then, I’ve seen them myself, so…
It seems a lot of these walks and wild times happen all at once. His stuff is devestating, but some nights it’s an adventure. He’s like a box of chocolates…
I was wondering last night if this move was just for the three days, or if it might be for the duration. With the LHV doubleheader today, and the Hollands move to LHV, it looks like it might be just the three days, but we’ll see. Good luck to him.

  2. Aumont clearly has the stuff but the question will always be can he enhance his control enough to cut down on the walks to something only a little below average or average.

  3. From a pure baseball standpoint, I don’t understand this move at all. Not even a little bit – and I am one of Aumont’s biggest supporters (I think he has the best overall pure stuff in the entire organization) The only thing I can think of (in terms of justifying the move) is that they want to show Rich Dubee what they have in this guy and, perhaps, want to showcase him for a trade. I hope it doesn’t backfire because Aumont can mentally unravel fairly quickly.

    1. He’s been on a big stage before, at the WBC. I can’t see how giving him a taste will hurt his development.

    2. I think this is a good idea. He’s already on the 40 man, and he gets the opportunity to see how the vets prepare and conduct themselves in the big leagues. He could take notes from Papelbon. Even if he doesn’t pitch, there’s value in bringing him up now. He has a taste now, maybe he goes back to Lehigh hungrier and smarter than when he left.

  4. Maybe he can learn something from the vets on the team. He might not even pitch if he’s only going to be up for 3 days.

    1. Bring him up, let the Phillies see what he has. I would also like to bring up Gillies. Both of these guys have been in the system for a few years, give them a taste of the ML

    1. Steve even if it doesn’t go well. He has to demonstrate he can handle whatever along. MLB is not for the faint minded

  5. DON’T SEE how it will hurt him. let him pitch and get bombed, and see what he does, he isnt coming up, filled with confidence that he can get hitters out. he was having troulbe at triple a, this move is just plain dumb.

  6. Guys like Aumont seem to come along every once in a while. Devastating “stuff”…but a large inability to throw strikes consistently or command to throw to the edges of the plate. Sometimes these kind of guys “find” their control/command and sometimes not.

Aumont seems to have a problem living up to his stuff. Whether he can EVER become a legitimate reliever or a closer is becoming less and less certain. There seems to be an issue concerning his attitude; he seemed to be PO’d about not being considered a starter. After he conceded to the reliever role, his career is as rocky and inconsistent as a ship on rough seas.

The hope for him to be a contributor to the big club is fading IMO. He better find a way soon because the Phils might not have a lot of patience to spare. His move up to the bigs for a moment may not lead to any game time for him. He seems to be a filler for a few games, sitting on the BP bench.

Myself: I’d wish him success SOON, but my faith that he’d justify that wish seems to be fading. IMO, he is not among our first 15.

He doesn’t have much longer to show us he was a good trade piece for us besides Gillies who is showing great promise. I’d hope the next “up” is Gillies.

    1. He has two years to grow into his body. Big guys like him almost always develop late. His issue is mechanics.

  7. Make that two (2) HRs AND a double for Asche. The competition between Asche and Franco has been heating up with both doing fantastically well. Two levels ahead (and maybe to be 3 soon), Asche is making a case for inclusion in the big club’s plans for next season. It seems that Cody is determined to give the FO a choice: trade for a third baseman OR stick with him for ’13.

Not much of a choice IMO. Expect Cody to be working for a starting role at 3rd at ’13s beginning following an expected fine spring training. 3rd base solved!

And when Franco is ready (he will be looking to fill the #4 spot in the lineup), Cody will easily (he IS an athlete) fit in left field, or maybe 2nd base. A fine lineup; maybe better than Utley/Howard ultimately.

    Doubters apply elsewhere.

  8. ACSES35 stated it best. He is big and young give him some time. He has the most pure stuff in the upper levels. Bull, he is not in the top 15. I know you are going to put some young guys in there that you have never laid your eyes on. Your guessing not evaluating.

  9. what about frandsen as a short-term fix at third till asche is ready? use the money to sign outfield help instead.

    1. As nice as his last month has been, Frandsen is not an everyday 3B in the Majors.

That line of thinking is what got us Mayberry in a starting role this year.

      Like

      1. Eh. I’m pretty sure they only wanted Mayberry to play against lefties. Given the free agent market for 3B, signing a guy for Frandsen to compete with or split time with may not be the worst thing.

        1. I’d be happy with Frandsen as a utility infielder that gets reps at 2B, 3B, SS. I just dont want them banking on him for significant playing time given his track record.

    2. I just cannot see him holding the job everyday no matter how temporary it is. He has never shown the ability to do so with SF, and LAA. He could be a solid backup if we sign Macier Izturis as a platoon

    3. I like the line of thinking but I don’t think Frandsen is that guy. The only downside to just playing Asche in the situation is that it is adding another lefty to the line up. At this point you have to assume Asche is going to the AFL to further accelerate his development (the he will be contending with Anthony Rendon for playing time). I am warming up to Asche at 3B next season as long as there is use for that money elsewhere (2 OF and no Mayberry/Schierholtz platoon)

  10. Some hoped Asche would break .300 before the end of the season. How about before the end of the week. Give him a mulligan for June orientation and he is hitting almost .320 and add Franco at plus .340 for July and August. Ya gotta luv strong finishes

  11. With all the plaudits heeped on May, Cosart, Ramirez, etc., Pettibone had become Pettibone-The Lesser. Now, giving him credit for his “getting-it,” he looks like a serious candidate for the #5 in ’13s rotation.

Here, I’m hoping that his ascent makes it all the more possible to trade a Kendrick (newly inspired with several well pitched games for the rest of this season) along with Valle (?) to get a good righty outfielder. Plus one by free agency.

Doing that would make this team very competitive in ’13…enough to vie for the playoffs again. We still will have the big three on the rotation. Pen under repair, too.

Add Cody and the two outfielders plus a recuperated Utley (to play 125 games) and Howard and the team could once again scare opponents.
