Well, Jesse Biddle would have thrown a no-hitter if it would have just started raining after the 7th inning. Stupid weather. Anyway, 12 K and 2 BB over 7 scoreless IP. He’s a keeper.
Just looked up and found out the Crosscutters manager is Andy Tracy. Needless to say he isn’t doing a very good job, there is too much talent in that lineup for them to be hitting that poorly.
Lots of HS 2011 draftees in a college league, not really much expectation of the guys in the rotation. Not making excuses, but that’s a hard judgment to make on the man based on the roster/situation, IMO.
WPT has the youngest team in the NY-Penn League, with many of them making their first professional appearances. Additionally, due to injuries, they’ve had to make due with some guys that really shouldn’t be playing (Hoppy, Olmo).
Saw WP play 3 times and they were a mess. Tons of mental and physical errors. Not sure if Tracy is to blame but I would think he is at least partially responsible.
I have been saying this for few weeks now. That team is behaving like bunch of undrafted rookies (which they are not and have ton of talent there). I tried to look up the hitting coach but he has moved into new role where to travel all the phillies minor league teams to help with hitting. I am assuming Dick Tracy took over hitting instructor for Willamsport. These players collectively are not adjusting. I blame that on coaching.
R u serious!!! Blaming the manager for the young players out of high school. Get a life dude u think u can do better go and try!! Do u even know what kind of baseball mind Tracy has, why do u think the Phillies hired him. He knows how to teach and be a role model. Not his fault the team is green and inexperienced. Big difference from high school to the minors.
I won’t be surprised to see Kelly Dugan in Reading by next June. His OK walk rate (9.5%) almost makes up for his K Rate, which is still high, (24.6%), but he needs to get moving in the system after 4 yrs now. He’s been on a couple real nice streaks pretty close together now. If he can string together a couple of those early next year, maybe he gets the jump to AA mid-year. He’s going to need to be exposed/protected in 2013 off-season, and it’d be real nice to see if he can hit some AA stuff before then.
I agree. I was a little surprised they decided not to bump him to Clearwater this year to try and move him a long a little quicker. He’s up to 13th in SAL OPS. If he hits similarly well early next year I can see him getting a bump.
Trevor May – yuck. Hope he can finish the season on a high note. Biddle clearly our #1 prospect now.
How many guys are we going to see in top 100 lists over the winter aside from Biddle? I can see Morgan and maybe Franco, possibly Asche. What do you guys think?
As far as top 100 possibilities: Biddle most likely. Tommy Joseph outside possibility. Morgan and Asche being promoted to AA, gives them a chance. If Franco has impressed the scouts enough, he could slip in. I think they rank no more than two Phillies (coming from that group of 5) in the top 100.
Agree nik – it’s going to be difficult to justify putting anyone but Biddle in the 1 spot. While some new faces in our system have understandably garnered attention, all Biddle has done is increase his K-rate and lower his BB-rate while playing Advanced-A ball as a 20 yr old. Particularly given May’s struggles, I’d say Biddle’s performance makes him a lock for no. 1
for OA; Biddle should be a lock and I really think the combination of Morgan’s on-field performance and positive scouting reports lands him in the Top-100 as well. That’s probably where it ends for the Phils, though the players mentioned above could have an outside shot.
. . . and of course, it’s a year too early for Tocci (stop whining and start believing. Tocci is the real deal)
I can see May touching the back end a few lists based on stuff (like Colvin did on MLB’s list). Biddle has to be a lock at this point, maybe Morgan, but I would say if you are making a list to 150 Asche, Morgan, and Joseph have to be locks with Hernandez and Franco having outside chances. Tocci, if he has good instructs I could see making the back end of top 100 or nowhere close as a guy that someone could take a stand on, you could justify it based on age and skill if you have the projection that says he will actualize it.
I can just see a scenario where you look at him and see a guy who is 16 and is showing a good hit tool with great discipline, combined with plus plus speed and plus plus defense. Then you look at how rail thin he is and wonder if he puts on some muscle and gains at least doubles power with possibly more, you can justify that he is one of the 100 best prospects in the game. That and it isn’t like he came in with no hype, he was a top international signing.
Not sure if Tocci has plus plus speed. Saw two instances on Thursday where his speed did not impress. That being said, he is 16 and has solid tools. He will certainly fill out as he matures.
Nice game by Franco yesterday. He has been on fire the past two months. There is sure to be some interesting debate as to who is the better prospect at this point: him or Asche.
Franco has more potential, but Asche has the looks of a nice solid major leaguer and is far closer to being a finished product. I guess it comes down to your parameters for ranking guys.
There is so much to love about what Franco is doing: his BB/K rates are solid, his average is climbing, and 13 HR as a 19-year-old is pretty sweet. He’ll only get better.
Its interesting situation. I have no doubts Franco will continue his hitting at Clearwater (too soon for that?). I am thinking maybe you move Asche to second base and let Franco stay at third. Asche probably get to phillies year earlier and that will be enough time to see if he hits with power at ML level.
You’d think that if Asche could stick at 2B after the experiment last year, he’d still be playing there. That is, unless the Phils foresaw Asche as a potential fast-rising replacement for Polanco at third and moved him there out of need — a highly unlikely scenario, IMO.
Keep them both at third. If they both become regulars, you’ve got a good kind of problem to solve.
franco, being a right handed batter, would help give the phils’ batting order some balance. i have seen and like both franco and asche a lot. i think both will make good major league infielders.
Question about Biddle for those that have seen him or know more about his “stuff”, I was reading about his repertoire, and besides being blown away by the fact that a 20 year old has a 5 pitch arsenal. I had some questions about his secondary stuff, obviously the 4 seam fastball and the 12-6 curve are deadly. But I was reading he has a slider, a change up and a two seam fastball. Does he throw these effectively?
From what I remember reading the slider is a pitch that is being slowly reintroduced after being scrapped when he was drafted. The change up is above average and can flash even more at times. I don’t know anything about his two-seamer
Domonic Brown,I can’t believe he was considered a five-tool prospect at one time with the way he plays outfield.I used to play outfield, guess what, its not that difficult!! With some coaching, practice and WILL you can become a good outfielder.
Jesse Biddle,he’s definately going to be above Trevor May on my list.I realize he didn’t pitch in AA yet,but the results May has so far this year, not good. If he doesn;t get better results before long, guess what he’ll soon be old.
Cody Ashe, love the results he has been getting,I would love to see more homeruns, perhaps he can get some tips from his room mate> Darin Ruff.
You’re telling me. Brown should not have dropped that ball out there. I think he has gotten better though and will continue to do so. Worst case scenario he plays like Pat Burrell, 20 feet in from the warning track, catch everything you can get to, hose runners trying to score.
If Brown becomes what Heyward is this season I will be ecstatic. Heyward is currently hitting .275/.350/.488 with 20HR and 17SB. With pretty good defense in right, that is an all star caliber player.
There is no patience with Domonic Brown from some. He’s a victim of unreasonable expectations. Brown was a similar prospect to Dexter Fowler, and it’s taken Fowler 4 years to become what everyone thought he would.
Brown will get run out of town by the middle of next year unless he has an OPS+ of 120.
I haven’t given up on Brown. I’ve actually found myself defending him quite a bit recently. But there’s no comparison between him and Heyward right now, even though each guy was at one point thought of as the top prospect in baseball.
Brown was #1 for about a month, when about 10 guys ahead of him got promoted at the same time. Heyward was a potential superstar the minute he was drafted. They’re not comparable.
The worst thing that ever happened to Brown were those guys being promoted in 2010.
Partially true about the guys promoted. He was ranked #4 pre-2011 by BA, so there were 3 guys ahead of him, not 10. Either way he was an elite prospect, but not ever thought of in the same way as Heyward. If you read the posts I was responding to, that’s basically what I was saying: The two aren’t comparable.
By judging some of the other top prospects I really think Franco has a chance. These stats in a pitcher friendly league and only 19. And the way he has adjusted post all star break shows it. Let’s hope the philles keep pushing some of these younger guys and keep them going. I can’t wait to see the next young guy like tocci and that is the last guy they signed the “other “Albert P.
We traded Jim Thome (On the DL with a herniated disc), we received Kyle Simon 0.60 ERA at AA and Gabriel Lino 19 y/o catcher. Who got the better of that deal…………..just sayin’
I’d really like to see Thome get the O’s into the playoffs but sadly it looks like that won’t happen. I was surprised at the return we got for him at the time and am more than satisfied with it at this point.
The only speculated player the Phillies were linked to was Schoop, who is regarded as a significantly stronger prospect than Simon and Lino, and would challenge Joseph as our top position prospect.
Biddle! Also, Giles has been really, really good since they moved him up to Clearwater. Good to see Franco have a pair of extra-base hits. Nice start for Josh Warner too.
You put Walding in the GCL and watch him mash, I think they just move them up a level at a time, no need to rush Green into full season ball.
Chill on Gueller, what are you looking for out of him? If you think he is going to come in and strike everyone out you need to get your head checked and really reevaluate what you expect prospects to do.
You are right. Gueller and Watson, will most likely go straight to Lakewood. The Phillies do that with all their big bonus pitchers. Hitters are not as automatic. They did it with Galvis, Valle and Santana and each one struggled. Singleton stayed in extended spring for a month or two before bypassing Williamsport. I think the Singleton scenario is the best case for Green, especially with Walding in his way.
I think he is pretty even with Morgan, has better raw stuff, has worse command and is right handed. I think they could be argued in either order and I like having both in the system
I still think Pettibone is #3. Younger and pitching a level higher. I get he doesn’t miss as many bats but his ascent through the minors has hit very few obstacles. It still took Martin almost 100 pitches to get through 7 innings with very few baserunners. His strike to ball rate wasn’t terrific and something to keep an eye on. I’m loving his start just like everyone else but cautiously optimistic.
Pettibone is a little under the radar, I agree. Reason I go with Martin is just because he has a better upside. Pettibone is much more likely to be a contributor in the Majors though.
Someday i would love to ask joe jordan, what they saw in d’myers to move him to double a. so far in 111 atbats he has been better in double a then lower levels. makes no sense to me. Cloyd? if he is a big league pitcher, i would be the most suprise person on this site .I watch him and say no way. he has no velocity. If he cant get that junk over and has to use that thing he calls a fastball, they will crush him, just imo another swindle. except he is right handed.
If I had a guess the thought behind sending D’Arby to Reading was to challenge him. Maybe they saw that he was a little lackadaisical in Clearwater after spending 2 years there. He’s fallen behind a lot of guys in his draft class and I guess saw the need to challenge him. Besides its now Jordan’s system so a fresh perspective on players who have only had Lamar giving them their assignments.
I still think and dont care what people say, because this kid is a college player . who has made adjustments, in each stop so far. he is a definite invite to spring training with a chance to stick, unless they get a a ramirez or headley, which i think is not going to happen. This kid just gets better and better, and to start out struggling and adjust, just makes it so much better,
Looking ahead: there are 4 rotation pitchers for ’13, i.e., Halladay, Lee, Hamels and Worley (he after mid-winter surgery for bone chips) leaving one position to be filled.
Happily we DO have several candidates worthy of consideration, being Pettibone, Morgan and Martin. Any of them might be sent to the AFL in Oct to sharpen their knives. Maybe along with Asche , Joseph and Gillies.
Now THAT would be fun to watch…and follow…since that leads to an singularly interesting spring training in ’13.
Who would have thought that there could be some serious candidates vying for a place in the Citizen Bank’s sun in ’13…?…only 4 months ago.
I could see Pettibone there by midseason. I really think Kendrick will get the first crack at the 5th spot, which isn’t the worst thing. He’s a competent enough pitcher most of the time and all those prospects in AA and AAA could use more seasoning.
I’m really excited that, for the first time since I’ve been following the minors since about 5 years ago, a lot of the talent is actually in the upper portions of the system. Pitching-wise anyway, but there are some hitters too. There will hardly be a need for filler guys in the rotations in LHV and Reading.
Ugh! Please let’s try somebody else–among those mentioned–instead of Kendrick who I’d trade in a heartbeat. Thanks to him for taking up innings over the last few years, but these is little chance he would ever rise above a 5th starter or mid-inning reliever. Doing better than that would require him to come up with a new devastating pitch, perhaps a severe refinement of his change-up, etc.?
I’d love for them to include him in a package to get a righty outfielder who’d bring more benefit to the team than Kendrick, IMO.
But if all you’re using him as is a 5th starter, then it’s fine if that’s his upside. He’ll be replaced eventually but I think his stopgap role should last for another half season or so. Then probably Pettibone gets his chance if he’s pitching well in AAA. No reason to rush any of the prospects when we have a competent placeholder.
Let’s see you take 3 pitchers (Pettibone, Morgan, Martin) that have pitched an entire season in the minors, send to AFL for around a month and a half, bring them to the earlier MLB Spring Training and place them in the MLB rotation to begin the year. Some people would like pitchers to get an adequate amount of rest in the course of a year.
And that $4.5 million , or so, they pay Kendrick, that just goes to the bullpen. Don’t see that Kendrick adds much to bullpen, and with the LHP’s and the people they should bring in , plus some holdovers, I say spots will be at a premium in the bullpen. On the other hand, Kendrick, as a starter, can have around an even team record in the games he starts. And that’s adequate for a 5th starter. The collective team fate will be found more in the performance of the top 3 pitchers, augmented by 4/5 and the support they can be given by the roster.
The whole thing is screwed up, most pitchers just drafted would not have a chance to pitch in the GCL, even if they did it would be without developmental restrictions and with all of their stuff. I suspect Gueller is throwing 90%+ fastballs, you get GCL hitters out with anything that isn’t straight. The Phillies just want him to gain arm strength so that he can handle a full season workload next year. Now stop trolling and get a life.

Wrong on both accounts, as per usual.
Gueller and Walding to LWD, Green to WPT.

Ethan Martin 3IP 2H 0BB 5K so far. Martin is our #3 pitching prospect in my book. Behind Biddle and Morgan of course.

Watching Ethan Martin have a career turnaround this year, gives hope that Brodie Colvin still has time. Martin always had the strikeouts though.

Maybe he should give RA Dickey a call and try to learn to throw a knuckler.

Asche is moving more quickly than some like to admit. The problem now they can’t make a move that will block him in the future.
