Hot or Not

Winding down the season, this looks at the time period from 8/10 thru 8/16.  Minimum of 11 AB’s.

–Why waste more superlatives.  I am going to simply say….Cody Asche and Darin Ruf.

–After a very rough week one in Triple A, Sebastian Valle bounced back with a vengence this week, with two crucial HR’s. and 9 hits.

–Jon Pettibone with two very impressive outings (and wins) for the IronPigs, where he was keeping the opposition extremely off balance which resulted in a boatload of ground ball outs.

–Under the radar screen, Austin Wright now has double digit wins for CLearwater and an ERA sitting right around 3.

–Brody Colvin continues to be an enigma that doesn’t belong in AA.

–D’Arby Myers with 5 hits on Thursday evening is forcing people to notice.

–Michael Nesseth continues to be my “sleeper”. Keep an eye on him.

  1. I like Nesseth as well. Couple of bad outings skew his numbers but he has been pretty solid otherwise.

    1. I’ve also been following him … ever since the article prior to the season last year (wish I had a link) describing his work ethic (compare to Roy Halladay) and stuff. Had comments from Ruiz I believe that were pretty glowing.

  2. H-mart is on the hot list. Not sure what to make of that. I’ve been noticing him in the box scores the last couple weeks and it seems like he’s been improving, but he was so bad before it was almost hard not to.

Good to see Lino on a roll too.

    1. I heard from a friend who lives in Clearwater that Harold Martinez is following Polanco around during his rehab to gain some tips, who knows it could turn him around much like Duffy when Howard was in Lakewood

    2. Yeah, I was surprised to see Harold Martinez on the list, since he’s fallen off my radar, which is amusing because I had him pretty high on my top 30 and Asche might not have made it all all. Oh well, that’s one of the many reasons why I’m not a scout

      1. To be fair, there are many of scouts that probably would have agreed with that assessment at the beginning of the year. So you still have a chance.

  3. .439 .465 .659 1.124 Quite an August for Myers but check out 6 SBs without being caught as an addon. With Mitchel having a rough year Myers moves up at least to a serious invite.

    1. Spring Training Invite? Probably not. If anybody gets a invite within the system, it would seem to be James, Castro, or Kyle Hudson. Myers would probably be the guy they would bring up to Big League camp towards the end. It seems like the players they bring up from minor league camp are on their radar as potential big leaguers in the next couple years i.e. Stutes, Rosenberg, Bonilla, DeFratus, Galvis in recent years. BTW does anybody know who will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft? Ruf, James, J-Rod.

      1. I have a question about how the ule 5 draft relates to players like last year’s signees, who really didn’t play last year as compared to this year’s signees who played. Does the Rule 5 kick in after playing time or after signing time? There are plenty of players left from the 2008 draft. There will be many who had played that summer and who will be eligible (Ithink) for Rule 5; not Ruf, but certainly James, who was eligible last year, and J-Rod. The Phils will have to leave many players unprotected. Some, like Francisco Diaz, last year can catch fire with new teams. Rule 5 is great for players who have taken some time to find there way and now need new eyes to see their virtues. I doubt the Phils will protect Cloyd this year and Ruf next year with a spot on the 40 man roster.

        1. Rule 5 is 4 years for college draftees and 5 years for high school guys. So you gotta consider that as well.

  4. HMart is above the Mendoza line. Lino too. Is it possible that Hewitt missed the hot list by an eyelash and haven’t seen his name in the boxscore for an error in a while? Maybe I just missed a boxscore or 6 recently.

    1. He lost me last year anon and he’s certainly done nothing this season to regain my confidence. He’s not the only guy in our system with a big arm and at some point you need to start seeing some results. Sure, perhaps he puts it all together one year. I won’t dismiss that. Let the ‘projectors’ place him in our Top 10, but I’ll probably struggle to keep him in my Top 20

      1. Agree, if all the projectors still salivate over his natural skills and talents after this season, then if I were the GM I would see what kind of package he can be added to/placed in for something in return. Maybe he needs a change of scenery or another organization.

      1. I wouldn’t go that far. Perhaps he needs to go to the bullpen again for some time. He obviously has talent, so I wouldn’t give up on him yet.

  5. I see Willians Astudillo struck out the other day..first one for August I believe…4 all year…no lefty however has K’d him yet. Hand-eye coord must be exceptional.

  6. Valle has really found his stick this past week at LHV….. This will be an interesting situation with Chooch, Valle and Joseph….

Larry Greene breaking out the stick last night with 3 Dbls…. NICE…

    1. The interesting situation will be going into 2014…do they sign an aging Chooch (he’ll be something like 35 then) to a multi-year deal or are one of the 2 catching prospects ready to take over.

      Like

      1. I think they could re-up him for a reasonable two-year deal by that point … particularly if RAJ is serious about getting him some reps at third, as was reported in early August. His influence on the young catchers would be far too valuable to pass up.

  7. This is the most excited I have been about the farm system in years. I will be very interested to see how many position players move up into the top 10 prospects

  8. I know many of us question Hewitt’s chances of being much of anything….but is it my imagination or he is actually doing a fairly adequate job with the stick ? I know about the K’s but he seems more like the average player than the dregs ? Comments from anyone ?

    Like

    1. Sorry, I can’t agree. He’s showing power, but his K rate is 30 percent and BB rate is less than 4 percent. He’d be eaten alive by major league pitching.

      1. It will be ugly enough if/when they put him in Reading next year. There’s a huge gap in ability between A+ pitching and AA pitching. They probably wont cut bait on him this year but next year he’s done for unless he has a ridiculously drastic improvement.

  9. It will be interesting to see if Ruf makes BA’s Prospect Hot Sheet this week, since doing so would obviously be recognition of his prospect status. Given the week Asche has had, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him there as well (he’s had more doubles than an In’N’Out Burger).

    1. I brought this up about Ruf a few days ago, consensus was he’d be the Man among boys with his .333/.355/.933/1.288

Asche (.483/.516/.690/1.205) will be interesting, 6 doubles were all his XBH … think he makes the team photo is my guess

  10. I just want to thank Darif Ruf for making me look bad.

My wife and her sister went to the Reading Phil’s game last night, and I was sure to point out to here to pay attention when Darin Ruf come’s up to bat. There is a good chance he is going to hit a homer at some point. Needless to say, Ruf goes 1 for 5 with 3 Ks.

On second thought, maybe I should be apologizing for ruining the 5 game home run streak. My bad Darin.
