    3. Anon, I hope that that was just a sarcastic comment. 4 innings and 1 earned run is a good outing. 3 Ks in 4 innings is good as well. 2 hits in four innings is excellent. The WHIP for this outing is 0.75!

    4. It is too bad that Alec Rash lost 10 mph on his fastball from spring to summer. That is why he was not signed by the Phillies.

  3. Kelly Dugan having a stellar season in his first taste of full season ball. He needs to pull the K-rate down a bit but all in all he’s having a fine season. Clearwater to start next season as a 22-yr old. All is well with the world

  4. Quinn is a triples machine. A HR away from the cycle … Cesar and Dugan also with nice outings. Gueller takes the loss but appears to have a nice four innings.

    On a side note: If you’re going to come on here and just flame negativity, the least you can do is come up with a handle. I can’t tell if all these anonymous comments this morning are the same person or a group.

      2. I don’t know if this is significant or not, but Quinn has nine triples in 174 ABs. Billy Hamilton, by comparison, has 11 in 421 ABs this season. Obviously park dimensions and competition level come into play with such a comparison, but it tells you something about Quinn’s speed.

  5. Also, I’ve got to point out my favorite too-old-for-an-inferior-league-but-dominating-anyway pitcher, Severino Gonzalez, with 9 Ks yesterday. That’s an 95/8 SO/BB ratio on the season to go with a 1.80 ERA.

    1. I believe yesterday was the VSL Playoffs. Not sure if it is a 1-game playoff or best of three, but Gonzalez might have pitched the Phillies to their first minor league championship yesterday. On to GCL next year hopefully.

  6. The Lakewood team has had many come from behind victories this year. Did anyone notice the Power catcher? Pittsburgh claimed him from us as a Rule 5 minor league player last year. Diaz is hitting over .300 and is their mainstay catcher. He must be old for A ball.

    1. Are you talking about Francisco Diaz? He’s only played 42 games: 32 in A and 12 in A+. He’s hitting .167/.211/.167 in A+. He hit .322/.411/.437 in A ball. I assumed you were being sarcastic or something but it was nice to put his numbers out there.

      1. They have been working with Morillo to get him to this point. He has been pretty consistently good over the past five or six outings. I guess they want to see if they can use that high nineties fast ball. It may be significant that Hollands stayed in Clearwater and Cisco moved down to Reading. Then again, it may not be.

        1. I noticed after his last game that Morillo finally had more Ks than walks on the year- surprising considering he had about 20 more walks than Ks at one point. I’m not sure if I should be excited we might have a BP candidate throwing upper 90s or terrified somebody with those control problems is in our AAA bullpen. Little of both, I’m thinking.

      1. Reading rotation is now: May, Martin, Morgan, Colvin, and J-Rod. If they broadcast those games, I’d watch them more than the Phils.

They now have the following pitchers at A+ or above who could become top to middle-of-the-rotation guys: May, Martin, Morgan, Colvin, Biddle, Pettibone and Wright (sorry, J-Rod and Cloyd – not seeing it). If two of those guys really pan out (statistically likely) and a couple of others become 4s or 5s, we’ve really got something. The end of 2013 and 2014 should be interesting.

          2. I may have to move back in with my parents next summer to go out to Lehigh Valley games. A rotation with at least a couple of potential big leaguers instead of the Tom Cochrans and Matt Wrights and Scott Elartons of the world. I’m sure there will be at least one guy like that hanging around. I’ll visit my wife in DC when he pitches.

            For the record, I am not moving back in with my parents. Not a chance. If my wife divorces me and leaves me with nothing, I’m moving in with one of you guys.

        2. I’m very excited about Morgan. On twitter, Ben Badler said he and Biddle have really impressed scouts with both their stuff and control this year. He put Biddle slightly ahead given his age, but Morgan’s peripherals are hard to deny: 10.24 K/9 vs 2.05 BB/9, 2.40 FIP vs. 3.29 ERA (.307 BABIP), all in 123 IP.

        4. That’s a sweet rotation. And with Biddle and Wright not-so-far behind. I wonder what happens next year when those two are ready for AA? It seems like only Martin is close to getting the bump to AAA at this point.

          1. J-Rod to LHV or the bullpen. Wright is probably bullpen-bound as well, at least to begin the season. Reading should be May, Morgan, Martin, Colvin, and Biddle.

            Reading and Lakewood will be fun teams next year.

            3. Why would Martin have to repeat AA. He is having a successful season. May and Colvin are the pitchers who are struggling.
              Wright should be a starter in Reading, along with May, Biddle and Colvin.

            4. I believe that May, Martin, and J-Rod will all start next year at LHV. Reading with Biddle, Colvin, Morgan for sure, and Wright/Garner/Rosin for the final spots.

              I don’t necessarily believe that J-rod or May have *earned* AAA, but the gap between AA-AAA is much smaller than A+ to AA, and they will want the best pitchers to continue to start.

            5. Still young, first season starting at that level? Certainly he could start in Allentown, but I don’t see anyone behind him pushing him up. (I’m not as impressed as others are with Wright, and Garner and Rosin are bullpen guys for me.) Would rather see Martin (and May) dominate at AA before they’re bumped up. Just preference.

            6. Wright has certainly pitched well enough to earn a trip to Reading next year, just as Martin has so far pitched well enough to go to AAA. Idk why flat out dominance should be a requirement for a promotion. You’d end up with awfully crowded A ball and short season affiliates.

            7. I’m talking specifically about the bump between AA and AAA. There’s not a whole lot of difference in those levels, so if a prospect is still being challenged at Reading I see no reason to make the move.
              The point about Wright is somewhat separate . . . to me, he’s a fringe-y college lefty without much projection, and I don’t see the point in potentially rushing a better prospect like Martin to fit Wright into the Reading rotation.

      1. He was an 8th round pick as a senior from Baylor. Listed 5’9″ 195lbs – OSP near 1.100 in his senior year at Baylor. Probably too early to say he can’t be a prospect, but IMO he’s going to have to prove it at every level to become more than an organizational guy.

    1. Jiandido Tromp was somebody I was very interested in following, coming into the season, based on pre season scouting reports. Tromp was terrible the first few weeks, but has been pretty good since.
      June 27: BA .050, k% 48%

    1. Should start the rest of the year in LHV. His status is 2013 as a reliever or starter at LHV will depend on if there is room in the rotation for him. There will be a fair amount of competition from Reading/current LHV that could push him out, especially if neither of Pettibone/Cloyd are with the big club.

  13. Honest question about Morgan. So I re-read his draft profile, and it has fastball averaging out to 88ish. I saw a first hand report early last year by PP saying he looked more 91/92, but then JSlasher mentioned he was sitting 87-89 all except that particular outing. I have 3 Questions.

    1. Morgan is a lefty, his current K rate and BB rate are flawless, he’s pretty much neutral GB/FO and he’d sporting a predictably excellent FIP this year. As he moves up, does his lack of velo hurt his value as a prospect?

    2. What velo is “required” for a player to profile as an ace given him being left handed assuming two plus alternative pitches and good movement on the fastball? (I was thinking 90 at the lowest).

    3. Can someone give an updated Velo report on Morgan?

    1. 1/3. I think there was a report not long ago that Morgan’s velocity is up to the low 90s, topping out at 94. That’s what gives me hope he can be more than a #4 or 5 starter. Otherwise, his value and prospect status would definitely be lower.

      2. I’d say around 91-94. That’s where Lee and Hamels spend most of their time. With exceptional control and a couple other plus pitches, maybe 89-92.

        1. I don’t think anyone expects Morgan to be Hamels, whose minor league numbers were just plain off-the-charts-SILLY.

          He appears to have good command, and Reading will be a good test to see how well his stuff plays outside of a pitchers league.

        2. Hamels currently has a plus fastball with it (he gained velo since the minors). Additionally, take a look at Doc (alibet a righty) he doesn’t have any “plus plus” pitches. Though his command and control are obviously off the charts. Another example of a pitcher without plus plus stuff would be Bumgarner. He’s got ace potential for sure (if he’s not already) and seems to have multiple plus pitches but nothing game changing. The key here when you don’t have that cole hamels change is command and control, something it appears morgan has plenty of.

          If Handzus is right, and his velo sits 92ish and continues to have sucess at reading through the remainder of the year, he’s a fringe top 100 prospect.

              Roy Halladay does not have a plus 2 seamer and plus cutter.

            2. Not to pick nits, but “plus” and “plus plus” aren’t the same thing. I don’t think Doc has any “plus plus” pitches either. It’s his combination of multiple plus pitches and very good command that allows him to dominate.

          1. And the ‘money phrase’ from Ketch’s source: “If there is a downside, it’s that he doesn’t consistently get his lower half into his delivery. At times, it’s almost like he cuts off his arm action and fights his body. Even though his arm action is good, the extension at release could be improved. Normally, that means there is some hidden velocity in there.”
