With a patchwork lineup, the ‘Pigs have been the picture of mediocrity over the last several weeks, going 5-5 in their last 10 ten games, and now stand at 63-55, 2.5 games behind division leading Pawtucket in the Northern Division of the International League. Scranton is leading the wild card race, with Lehigh Valley one game back. After a day off on Tuesday, the ‘Pigs open a six game home stand against Buffalo against whom they play two, followed by two each versus Syracuse and Rochester.
Leaders: Cody Overbeck is 8th in doubles (26); Kyle Hudson is 6th in SB’s (20); Tyler CLoyd is 2nd in wins (11), 2nd in WHIP (0.96); and leads the league in ERA (1.93); Pat Misch is 2nd in losses (12), 3rd in HR allowed (16) and has the 6th worst ERA (4.98); Scott Elarton is 9th in losses (9), 5th worst WHIP (1.54); is tied for the lesgue lead in starts (23) and has the 5th worst ERA (5.06); Phillippe Aumont is 5th in saves (12); Tom Cochran is 7th in walks allowed (57)
Probables: Wednesday: Cloyd; Thursday: Pettibone, Friday: Cochran, Saturday: Elarton
Notes: OF Derrick Mitchell who has been on the DL since June 3 with a fractured wrist played for the GCL Phils on Monday in a rehab appearance and went 1-2 with a HR. Hopefully he will be activated by Friday.
–The ‘Pigs are 9-2 in extra inning games, best in the IL.
–Cesar Hernandez has hit in 4 of his first 5 games in AAA.
–Justin DeFratus is unscored upon in his last 5 games, spanning 5.1IP. He has two saves in those five games.
–With his win last Thursday, Tyler CLoyd set a Lehigh Valley record with his 7th consecutive win. He is now a combined 14-1 with a 1.91 ERA in 22 starts. Interestingly, he is also hitting .364.
–Even with having missed over 50 games, Derrick Mitchell still leads the team in assists with 6.
–SP Tom Cochran has allowed at least one homer in each of his last 6 starts.
–In his last 8 games spanning 8.2 innings, Phillippe Aumont has walked 6 and struck out 14. Dominating but wild.
–JC Ramirez has itched well his last two times out (4IP, 0ER) after struggling in his three prior outings
–In his last 37 games, Pete Orr is hitting .299 with 9 SB’s.
–In his last 51 games, Cody Overbeck is hitting just .205 with 4 HR.
Transactions: Plenty going on last week: To Lehigh Valley came: 2B Cesar Hernandez, C Sebastian Valle (both from Reading); RP Joe Savery and Jake Diekman (both optioned from Philadelphia) and Jake Fox (signed as a free agent). Going from Lehigh Valley were: Brian Sanches (Released), Justin Friend (send down to Reading), Michael Martinez and BJ Rosenberg (Called up to Philly). Hector Luna was called up to Philly and then sent back to Lehigh Valley two days later.
Elarton has turned out to be a major disappointment – getting lit up like a Christmas tree..
Even though it’s a positive that BJ went to the big club, it does screw the
LV rotation.,

Will LHV start Brummitt now that Rosenberg has ascended? Unlike last year, the pitchers the Phils brought in this year have not helped. Misch, Elarton, and Cochran are an adventure. Thank goodness for Cloyd. The Pigs can still do it, but the many moves have hurt club continuity. Go Pigs

This is a very good test for Sandberg. His pitching staff has to be mixed and matched all the time. Cloyd’s the ace that gives you a chance to win every time out. I’m not sure anyone else gives Ryne that. When I look at the lineup, I wonder how this team will win any games. But Sandberg seems to squeeze as much out of them as he can. I thought Overbeck would have a monster year so that the Phils give him some consideration (even if it’s a throw-in in a deal). They have some strong AAA guys with ML experience like Pridie, Luna, Fox, Orr and even Blanco. They aren’t very consistent as a group. But it’s gut check time. Play for pride and it always feels better to win than to lose.

Cloyd to the Phils. Worley to the O.R.(calling Dr, House we have chips here).
Let’s really find out about Cloyd

I’m not against this. Worley’s going to have to get the elbow cleaned out (although it was reported that he had a stomach bug last night). Would it be best to shut him down and bring someone else up? I’ve read what people are saying about Cloyd but he should be battle tested and then one of three things will happen. He’ll fail miserably and be tossed on the ML garbage heap. Or he’ll fail and learn something that might make him a servicable in a future year. Or he’ll succeed and he’ll give the Phils flexibility for next year and the future. What is there to lose? Isn’t there room on the 40 man roster? One way or another, it will at least slow down the pumpers and dumpers on the site. but then again, it might lead to a whole bunch of “I told you so’s”.

A couple of thoughts.
First, I agree it is time to shut Worley down and allow him to get his surgery and get healed. He is not the same pitcher he was last year in terms of velocity and movement. The team needs to know as soon as possible if that’s because he’s injured or because he’s just not as good anymore.
Second, agreed on Cloyd. Let’s try to find out what he can do. The team never expected very much from him, so if he does well, it’s like found money.
Third, I continue to believe that it may be worthwhile to see if Rosenberg can start. He had several really good starts in AAA and, most importantly, maintained his velocity for several innings. If he could master a third pitch, we may have lucked our way into a very dangerous 4th or 5th starter. If he can’t do it, he can go back to the bullpen and fire 95-97 MPH bullets like he did last night.

Really? Worley has been what we have expected. He’ll get the cleaning procedure in the off-season. I’m sure Cloyd will get the chance once LHV makes or misses the playoffs. The Phillies see Rosenberg’s quality as a reliever. I think he has seen the last of the minors. He looks great.

I think Worley is not quite the pitcher he used to be. Last year, he was sitting 90-94 with the FB – this year it’s more like 88-92 – which is a HUGE difference for him. I like Rosenberg as a reliever, but if he could start, he could be all the more valuable. What an arm!

I liked him coming out of college – I thought it was a great pick….. then he had all kind sof injuries – Im so pscyhed for the kid that he made it through all that adversity. We need some more of those comeback/surprise stories (like th Victorino’s,Ruiz’s, Werth, Dobbs, Coste etc;) .

One of the most frustrating things to me about the Phillies is the poor fundamentals, such as fielding positioning, throwing to the correct base, working pitch counts, etc. – as well as the steady string of errors. For those of you who watch the minor leagues – do they seem to do decently with that?

If you haven’t noticed, the Phillies have been fielding a AAA line-up all year.

LHV needs to get a little Ruf’d up!

Ruf is so disrespected, dismissed and just flat out dissed … he doesn’t even get his name on the Prospect Features section of THIS website.

There are a lot of prospects to not have a ‘prospect feature’ on this site. It hasn’t been updated very much lately.
