  2. Crosscutters pad the stat sheet; It was fun watching the play-by-play unfold last night. 4 BBs walks drawn by the middle of our order as well.

    Perhaps the most exciting thing about last night’s box score is the introduction of Hoby Milner who threw 3 strong innings of relief

  4. I think Knigge would be the guy they move up when friend gets his deserved promotion. Just going off stats on Knigge. Not sure what kind of stuff he has.

    1. There was a great article in the Inquirer last week. Knigge has really good stuff, apparently. His FB is allegedly between 94-97 MPH. He has upside and should move up the ladder quickly.

        1. Saw him throw against Daytona a few weeks ago. He had a nasty 81 mph slider that he was using in between 94-97 mph fb with late movement.

  5. L. Greene’s day was actually more impressive then at first glance. 2 for 3, a double, a stolen base, no strikeouts and TWO WALKS!

    The difference between an all star power hitter and a potential HOF’er is in the walks.

        1. You can easily make an argument for Bobby. He could end his career with 300 home runs and 400 sb’s with a career .397 obp. I don’t think he’ll make it either, but it’s not a GIANT stretch.

  6. Some nice things in the box scores. Aumont and Valle starting to string along some good games. Lots of hitting with Williamsport and GCL. Nice to see Chase playing the field and hitting a HR. I do think Knigge should get a shot at AA soon. I’m sure there will be a bunch a moves happening in the system in the next week regarding promotions. I’m hoping Tyson Gillies is back soon. Kid has no luck (oh yeah its bad). Hopefully Trevor May gets back on track. Seems to have that 1 or 2 bad innings.

  7. How does a team outhit it’s opponent 14 to 7 and lose 9 – 6? I guess 4 errors and 8 BBs don’t help. But at least they had a hit explosion (GCL). Johnathan Knight had a 2 -3 with a 2B and a BB plus 2 runs scored. He’s been a wild card to me. Drafted late and given a decent bonus but we didn’t know much about him. I think his mother chimed in a few times about him. In his 1st game, he performed very well. I look forward to seeing more of him.

      2. 🙂 I have been shooting Johnathan playing ball since he was 12. I turned it into a side job for me. It is hard to now have to watch through a fence when I have been on the field with him for so many years . I hope I got all of the names right for you all. Next game I go to I will get more. Should be next week sometime.

    Really good to see some position players with some promise. Valle, Hernandez, Asche, and Collier with the young guys in Williamsport.

  9. It was nice to see 17-year-old Stephen Golden get some ABs too. I like seeing the young guys get some experience under their belt.

        Cutters usually have one game against the Spikes like they had last night in the opening series. It usually gets me excited and then they come back down to earth once they hit the road. It’s hard to judge just how good the offense is against State College because of the Pirates’ philosophy with developing pitchers. Pitchers are required to throw about 80 percent fastballs and very rarely throw breaking balls (in fact someone threw two in a row last night and I was floored). The philosophy is built around working on locating the fastball on the corners and then throwing a breaking ball with two strikes. But with throwing so many fastballs, there aren’t a lot of two-strike opportunities to throw breaking balls.

        But I really feel this Cutters team is different. There’s going to be nights like Tuesday when they just don’t hit, have poor at-bats and approaches, but I think there’s also going to be a lot of nights like last night where they put up some big numbers. Obviously I love Roman Quinn at the top of the lineup and selfishly I hope he’s here all summer. I think the middle of the order with Pointer, Serritella and Greene is dangerous and Olmo has showed some spark in the early going. Mitch Walding is going to hit. Can’t imagine he stays in the seven-hole all season.

        This really might be the most intriguing team in the Phillies system to watch all year assuming these guys stay here. And if Dylan Cozens gets a call up at any point and Willie Carmona is assigned here after he signs, well then it’ll be hands down the most intriguing team to watch.

    2. Staven Golden is one of the draftees that I am most interested in following this year. I was slightly surprised that he was signed so easily. His profile on perfect game makes him seem like a more polished HS OF than what the Phillies normally draft. I think he, along with Pullin, may be the sleepers of the draft.

    1) Aumont ..2) Rosenberg 3) Bonilla 4) Friend 5) Cisco 6) Knigge

      By potential (or prospect status): Aumont, Bonilla, Knigge, Rosenberg, Friend, Cisco

      2. I would say that too, maybe you can flip Knigge and Rosenberg and by this time next year Bonilla could eclipse Aumont.

        1. Funny, I was going to say Knigge and Bonilla – but the ranking is pretty good. Somebody mentioned J.C. Ramirez – I would rank him right around Knigge, but slightly higher than Rosenberg, just due to his age and workhorse physique.

          1. Why switch Knigge and Bonilla? Bonilla’s younger, at a higher level, Ks more batters and we know he has a plus secondary pitch. It seems to me like Knigge is outperforming his peripherals a little bit, so I’d actually put Rosenberg ahead of him also.

      3. Past performance is best indicator. Rosenberg was a steal in the 13th round. If you throw out year injured, awesome numbers at every stop. If he gets chance to perform like Schwimer, Savery – he’ll tear it up.

    2. Aumont#1 and Bonilla #2. Everybody else that has the capability of being a 1 WAR relief pitcher, is currently a starter in the organization.

      1. Bryan Morgado as well, he’s got a live arm and is showing good peripherals this year. Plus, doesn’t hurt to be left handed.

        We’ve heard a lot about BABIP. But ERA is something you really have to be careful about when it comes to relievers. The rules about how runs are credited can really throw things off. Justin Friend has an 0.38 ERA but his WHIP is 1.125. Friend is pitching great, but that low ERA is really flukeish.

    As for Utley, he looks just fine both in the field and at the plate.

    1. Might be a precursor to an Asche promotion? If H. Mart can hang at Clearwater then you may see the Asche promotion.

      2. Oh wow that is surprising for a HS guy without any pro experience. HE was on the GCL roster and I expected him to start there.

    3. Unjustified promotion at this point, but whatever lets hope he can learn to hit the ball in a gap at some point.

    5. That probably means that Asche won’t be needed at their 3b…but Reading would be happy to get him at 3rd. Should Gillies come back SOON, he with Asche and Collier, Valle, etc. would form an impressive gang of prospects there only a hop, skip, and jump to the big club from there IF all of them are sent to the AFL. Sometime in ’13….

  15. What a night for Walding 4 for 5 with 4 RBI’S. He missed a Grand Slam by a couple feet,only got a single because L. Green misread the ball.But a good night for all the new guys.

  16. Just a few games…but it is good to see position players off to a good start. There is a coterie of better potential among our ’11 draftees…plus some interesting power guys in our ’12 draft.

    A long way to the top…but it is well worth watching/following.

    It may be too early to assess the current and last draft…but there were many here who judged the ’11 draft one of best for infield position players, previously a hole in the system.

    Now if they could get some better catching prospects….to supplement Valle…

  17. Some interesting pitching in the system tonight – Musser at WPT, Manzanillo at LKW, Wright at CLW and Hollands debut at REA.

    Musser got knocked around last year so I’m curious to see if he has figured anything out. Manzanillo has a lot of upside and is coming off a good start (I think). Wright will hopefully get back on his early-season run. And Hollands gets a chance at AA, pretty cool for him. Let’s see if he can be effective against better hitting.

      1. He did alright in his first AA start too. I guess he’s only up there until Naylor or Buchanan come off the DL but the experience should be a good thing.

  18. I like the First Half/Second Half format of some of the leagues. Now Lakewood, which would have nothing to play for can win the second half and be in the playoffs. They are beginning to play like they have a purpose. It is nice to see Manzanillo pitching well again.
