Personally, I’m more happy about the walk. We all know this guy can hit for power but he needs to show some kind of plate discipline if he’s going to fully tap into it.
As long as Pettibone keeps the ball on the ground he will do well in Reading and at Citizens Bank Park. Also, the higher the league, the better the infield defense.
It is insane but reviewing the play-by-play, not only were his outs mostly on the ground (and all 3 FO were in his final inning of work), but the vast majority of the hits were through the infield on the ground. He’ll need to put some more guys away by K but those are some pretty severe groundball tendencies for 1 game.
Some of the hits off him were very well hit. He did give up two singles that a better defensive 3B than Kennelly would have caught, but had a lot of hard hit balls. The OF play was very good and saved him at least one single turning into a double. His FB sat around 88, especially near start of game, but spiked a couple 92s, a 91, and a couple 90s. Rosenberg throws harder. Except for the crushed HR, when he got a little wild, Rosenberg pitched very well. His FB was sitting around 92 and spiking as high as 96.
Biggest disappointment of game was how overmatched both Gillies and James looked with the bat.
Their OF defense will help them all year, those three can really play strong defense. As for James and Gillies being overmatched, it was just the first day…..
Anyone else notice that Pettibone faced 23 batters and only threw 25 pitches? And all 25 were strikes (or balls hit in play). He didn’t throw a singe ball. I can’t recall seeing that before.
There was only 1 ball thrown by any of the 3 Reading pitchers. Freakin’ Rosenberg probably missed by a hair. I, at first, thought the math didn’t work. He gave up 10 hits, had a K and got 17 other outs but the DPs made it work. They had 5 DPs in the game. I didn’t check how many Pettibone had behind him but it had to be at least 3. It’s very strange because how many called strikes could there be? Everyone was swinging on the first pitch. Jon’s been known to have good control so the book on him must have been to swing at everything.
This is a great observation. There seems to be disbelief. Why not ask the Reading team or Brian Seltzer? I’m sure of them will have the stats. Then there is no controversy, simply awe and wonder.
Thanks for drilling down on the statistics, Handzus. I was just about to comment that 10 hits in 6 innings was not an encouraging line from Pettibone. Although, from a glass-half-empty perspective, just one K might suggest that AA hitters were seeing his stuff pretty well tonight.
Wait, am I crazy, or did Reading play a doubleheader on opening day? That seems bizarre.
Home run for Leandro Castro. That’s nice. Not a prospect-related comment, and small sample size and all, but I for one am not so thrilled to see that Jose Contreras now has an ERA of 81.00.
Contreras is forty going on forty-five. They are probably thankful he can get the ball to the catcher at this point. We may not see him for a while in CBP.
He’s likely working on a specific pitch that isn’t working yet. All reports say that his velo is fine, its juts location and movement that he’s working on.
Pretty excited about Dugan hitting a home run, would be a pleasant surprise if he had a big year and stayed healthy. I kind of wrote him off in my mind.
Dugan has always shown good command of the strike zone and good bat control, albeit, in small samples. I think some faith in the scouting that led to his draft position is still appropriate, as it is with Hudson.
I further like the idea that, while Dugan got good reports on his athleticism, he was also seen as a relatively advanced high school bat, which is not the Phillies MO when it comes to high school picks.
I could easily see Dugan dropping a 300/370/470 slash line and taking a leap into the top 10 this year ; I have more hope for him than I do Hudson/Collier/Altherr, at least in the sense of near-term performance (perhaps not in ultimate ceiling).
I saw Dugan walking around in ST but didn’t see him play. He seemed much bigger and stronger than I remembered. He looks like a 1B now and yesterday’s 2 hit day including a homer was a great start for him. He needs to stay healthy and stay on the field all year. Mickey batting him 3rd tells you something also. I’m really going to have fun following the LWood team all year.
Small sample sizes seeing Dugan in Williamsport, but when healthy he can handle the bat. My concern is he has a very violent swing. He doesn’t overswing, but very violent in his rotation. I wonder how much that maybe contributed to the stress fracture in his back last year.
He has power potential with as much solid contact as he makes. In the two years I saw him he always had thick legs, and from my years of covering high school and college wrestling, young kids with thick legs have room to grow in their upper body, and I thought that was the biggest thing Kelly needed to improve on. If he was able to add strength, the homers would come. But he’s far more of a line drive hitter than a pure power hitter. Would be a huge boost, though, if the power settles in.
Tyler Cloyd 6 ip with 8 Ks and no one on base against him. Aumont pitching in the 7th with Diekman in the 8th and Schwim getting the save. Anyone want to read into that?
As I mentioned in an earlier post, would anyone fear that Clearwater lineup? Work around Murphy and force someone else to beat you.
I’m trying not to read into it too much because in general, your minor league closers are the non-prospects (because you never know when you are going to pitch). I’d like to think more highly of Schwimer.
I enjoyed thinking about the order they were used also. But for me the important thing was that they all put up zeroes and just shortened the game. What a strong bullpen Sandberg has, and DeFratus is coming soon, as is Savery I assume. All could pitch in Philly at some point this year. And, just for more fun, BJ Rosenberg and Cisco also have what it takes. I have to assume the ranks will thin with some trades by year’s end.
Yes, everyone in MLB is trying to acquire middling relief arms. Schwimer, Cisco and Rosenberg should bring back a similar haul to what they received for Zagurski and Mathieson.
Thing of interest: bullpen game for Reading on opening day. Don’t want 2 of the more highly rated prospects on the same work-rest schedule to start off, I reckon.
Early season line-ups could be indicative of who gets playing time to start the season and have the chance to maintain the spot. LVIP OF of D. Brown, R. Thompson, D. Mitchell. Perhaps Podsednik and/or Montanez have not reported yet, but also they plan for the more veteran OF’s in a reserve role. Don’t see the IF’s or C’s not getting adequate playing time on a rotational basis, with the exception of organizational catcher, Suomi.
Reading see much the expected regulars except for SS and/or 3B. The opening game start of Kennelly over Tug Hullett, will Kennelly get first priority there, and interest in the Hanzawa/ Abreu situation at SS. Of course this could all be torpedoed if the MLB squad is ever healthy at 2B, SS, and 3B at the same time, and Freddy Galvis returns to LVIP and somebody is bounced down. I don’t expect it.
Clearwater- P. Lavin and Brandon Tripp start in OF, D. Myers sits to open season. Albert Cartwright and Asche start at 2B and 3B while Carlos Alonso sits. Don’t know about this situation onward. Return from injury of A. Hewitt, Harold Martinez, and return from suspension of Zach Collier could alter the plan here. Jeremy Barnes filled DH position for opener, don’t know if they use much in IF, or (I say) OF. DH option at this level is a factor.
Lalewood- given the composition of the final roster starters about as expected. Maybe some alternation at 2B (Gus Gonzalez, Drew Hillman, Carlos Perdomo) and 1B (Kelly Dugan and Christiopher Duffy) . If Dugan can maintain maybe more DH work for Duffy which might cramp one of the highly rated OF’s per game. See alot of playing time for Logan Moore due to high defensive rating.
I’m pretty sure Podsednik will be playing everyday. They put him on the minor league inactive list to give him a few personal days before he has to report.
Montenez and Podsednik will both be playing alot. At Reading, Cloyd was supposed to start but got called up due to Bush’s supension and they backfilled with veteran relievers who wouldn’t otherwise have started. I expect Kennelly and Hulett to rotate as welss as Abreu and Hanzawa. At CWater, Hewitt will play when he’s healthy but I think Cartright passed Alonso and Lavin may have passed Myers, who will still play quite a bit. At LWood, Gonzalez won the 2B job and will play. Hillman is the backup 3B and will struggle for abs as will Duffy if Dugan continues hitting. Boy, its tough not to be amzed at how bad that CWater lineup is. Maybe someone like Asche (or Hewitt) will surprise us but on paper, it really looks weak.
The weakness of the Clearwater line-up shouldn’t be a surprise. Lakewood was weak last year, Collier was suspended and they double jumped Asche after a terrible debut, to get him out of the way of Franco. That lineup could be nothing but weak, at least on paper.
Is it possible that Cloyd had a decent amount of his success because the other team was not prepared with scouting reports on him considering he was a last minute fill-in? Similar to the way rookies have success at the big leagues before scouting reports develop on them.
They don’t really do any advance scounting in the minors until the playoffs. I think that Cloyd threw the ball well but it wasn’t like LHV hit the cover off the ball either. Maybe the strike zone was a bit wide….
The first scan of the lineups served to verify just how thin the organization’s position player depth is. I am not just talking about the hitting results for the day, but the overall lack of hitting strength at each level. I hope we have some surprises this year because otherwise, the Phils are quite a way away from serious position player assistance from the minors.
AAA Hope D. Brown can put it together.
AA praying for Gillies to be reborn and Valle to be for real maybe Castro, Hernandez or James?
A Clearwater Rupp? Who else to hope for?
A Lakewood There are at least a few hopefuls here. Franco, Greene, Altherr, Pointer, Hudson in that order for me,
Not trying to be negative, but just calling it as I see it to start the new season.
You forgot to mention Valle and Dugan, two guys that actually went deep. I don’t think its a surprise to anyone that our system is short on hitting talent. Let’s just see how the year plays out plus we have Larry Greene, Quinn, Walding, Herlis and Villalobos (and the kid Tocci) still waiting for WPort to start.
Oh the Clearwater team is a definitely a black hole of offense. It’s a reflection of the woeful 2011 Lakewood Blueclaws offense which scored almost 130 fewer runs than they did in 2010. Clearwater 2012 is even worse because there’s no Domingo Santana and Zack Collier is suspended.
Now looking at the box scores I can really analyze what I am looking for:
LHV: Brown and the Relievers (I mean seriously is that the best bullpen in the minors, especially when DeFratus is off the shelf and joins them)
Reading: Everyone
CLW: It is just the pitching there is a lot of interesting college arms there from the past few drafts that could move very quickly if they move to the bullpen (I am looking at you Perci Garner)
LKW: The hitters are all very intriguing with breakout candidates littered everywhere
The nice thing about the system the way the Phillies construct it is that while it may not look like much now but it is littered with high upside breakout candidates, they really flame out when they are bad but they have star potential. As much as Hewitt is a non-prospect he still has the tools that when he gets in the lineup I will be excited every time he walks because there is still a .01% chance that he puts it all together and is a monster (or at least Mayberry) and others like Altherr that you will believe in until they are released.
Nice to see Cesar Hernandez get off to a good start. He struggled mightily at the beginning of last year. Cesar H and Valle are in perfect position to get on the major league roster, unimpeded, with Ruiz and Utley’s contracts running out after 2013.
Agree on Valle’s outlook, but on Cesar H., if Utley does not return after 2013, then Freddy Galvis may stay if he performs up to expectations at the plate. His glove and defense are already MLB caliber. And Rollins contract is through 2014 with an option year year for 2015..
Methinks Ruiz stays. Valle will be his back-up to start, then they’ll switch roles. Ruiz would be the perfect person to tutor Valle on handling the staff as well as all aspects of defense, and maybe he can even rub off some of his OBP skills on the kid.
What are Cloyd’s top pitches? He had a pretty solid WHIP at Clearwater and Reading last year and he turns 25 in May. Pretty impressive performance in any league.
Seeing some good nights so far: Gillies with 4 hits, Castro 3hits, James 3 hits including a home run, Eldemire with 3 hits and 2 SB, and Kyrell Hudson with 2 hits and 3 sbs
I saw that they had the Castro walkoff homerun on the Reading Phillies Facebook page. It was a shot. The kid has a little attitude but that can be good. He swung hard and looked right at the bench. He knew it was gone.
Watched Colvin pitch in Clearwater(no speed gun) tonight, he threw 74 pitches, 34 balls, 40 strikes with only 2 swing and misses. He obviously did not have his control or command tonight, evident by the 34 balls and the 3 doubles he gave up which led directly to the first 3 runs he let in. The 4th run scored on a WP when he had 2 outs and 2 strikes on the batter. If I remember correctly when he had his good year at Lakewood he also started the season poorly and picked things up as the season progressed, lets hope he starts sooner this year. On the offense Asche had a good night, while facing a lefty he crushed a ball to dead center for a long out and lined out in the ninth to go along with his single and walk. Rupp hit 2 solid singles and Cartwright ripped a double. On the negative side there were two poor base running errors. Murphy was doubled up at 1st when Asche hit that deep fly to center, he was halfway to 3rd when it was caught. And Cartwright was doubled up at 2nd on a “hump back” line drive at the SS. Both plays looked very ugly because there were no outs in each instance.. With this teams offense they can’t make those kinds of errors.
Wow! Lakewood’s Manzanillo, Sasaki, and Morgado really got themselves in and out of trouble with wildness and luck. The hitting was great. It is nice that Shreve and Duke were on hand to provide some order in the game, which was capped off by homers by Pointer and Altherr.
Nice to see Valle walk again tonight. I said it above but plate dicipline is going to be huge for this guy as he matures into a hitter. His raw power is useless if he hacks at everything thrown at him in the MLB.
Valle with a walk. He is a changed man.
