Alright, the voting between Aumont and Pettibone is separated by 1 vote. This means we will have a runoff vote. The winner of the runoff will be #6 on the list, the runner-up will be #7, and then we’ll immediately move on to #8. So, you have two choices today, vote now!

Phillippe Aumont
Phillippe Aumont
That is in English and French as required by Quebec law. At least that is what Dan Aykroyd as a police officer told us in Canadian Bacon.

Wow, can’t remember the last time I heard a Canadian Bacon reference. That being said, I’ll side with Rhea Perlman and take Pettibone over the canuck.

After much consideration, I am exercising my solemn and discretionary right to change my mind and vote for Aumont after having previously backed Pettibone, who I like a lot. I think that, even as a reliever, Aumont has too much upside to ignore. Go Phillippe!!!

James thanks for allowing a runoff vote. I’ve been voting for Pettibone for a while and Im not changing it; unlike that traitor Catch (I needed to needle you a little bit).

As far as the Pettibone family is concerned I have a gigantic “X” on my back now. It’s okay, I grew up outside NYC as a Mets fan – my entire family still does not forgive me for crossing to the dark side although they have to respect me for enduring the Francona years in agony.

I hope Phillippe Aumont is the next Mariano Rivera, (I actually hope Jonathan Papelbon is the next Mariano Rivera, if you want to get technical). I worry that Phillippe Aumont will walk someone the first time he pitches, then give up a gigantic FB fueled homerun and be back in AAA the next week, spirit broken, never to return. I have no reason to believe he’s mentally incapable of pitching in high leverage situations. I also believe that short relievers, unless they do turn into high-end closers, are really not valuable compared to a mid-rotation starter. I voted for Pettibone.

Wow, over 300 votes will be up for grabs for #8. I’ve got Tyler Greene ahead of Franco and JRod.

Not so fast. The De Fratus voting block will probably get a lot of the Pettibone/Aumont support, after this run-off.
I think the Rodriguez, Franco, Tyler Greene battle may be a couple days away.

I agree. I have Justin De Fratus next after these two. Justin had a phenomenal 2011 season and I rate him above both Franco and Rodriguez. Never mind that those two play more valuable positions than De Fratus — Justin is polished and ready to go right now. I see him playing a valuable role this season. Even if he struggles in 2012 I still think he has the goods to settle into a 7th or 8th inning role. Heck, I won’t be shocked if he advances into a closer role at the MLB level, maybe right about the time Papelbon’s deal expires. I have JRod right after De Fratus and Franco right after JRod.
I have high hopes for Tyler Greene but for now there’s no one tool that stands way out like Quinn’s speed or Larry Greene, Jr.’s power. I have Tyler at 16, behind both Quinn and LG Jr. I have to admit, it’s mostly wish-casting since I have so little to go on.

Didn’t mean to imply that De Fratus should be the next choice. I just think he will be next, before the high ceiling guys.
I have De Fratus at #11.

Since we know who the 6th and 7th prospects will be, why not just open up the polling for #8 while we’re at it?

Bowker released by the Phillies in other news. Guess even Japan didn’t want him.

They released him so that he can sign with a Japanese team. This is yesterday’s news.

Random question, had Madson accepted arbitration from the Phillies, what’s the best guess as to where he would have settled for one year? I’m thinking he’d have been over the $8.5M he got from the Reds?

Probably a little bit less than $8 mil

Based on Lidge previous contract and the Phillies signing of Paps together with last year he would likely have received 10 mil.

Again, I voted for Pettibone. He is a capable starter with good control and a sinking fastball. I like Aumont, but I like DeFratus better. You can project all you want. I’d rather have a guy who has demonstrated command and control. Aumont will need the entire year to repeat his delivery in order to improve his control issues. You can have all the projection you can have, but the inability to control your pitches is key for me. Pettibone for now; DeFratus, Franco are next.

I’m with you on this one.
An issue not mentioned whenh it come to Aumont: his attitude has been said to be less than good. Something about not loving his role as a reliever? Maybe was hoping to start?
Seems a bit churlish…? The Phils DO require a compatible teammate on their 25. Is he short-circuiting his better talents with his “personality”?
IMO, a relevant inquiry.

I know I’ll be paying a lot of attention to Pettibone as I didn’t have him in the top 10 a month ago….
Hopefully he starts at Reading so I can see him pitch in Trenton (if I’m lucky)

I was thinking the same except with Bowie in place of Trenton. Wouldn’t mind seeing May or JRod either. Maybe they’ll be lined up and I can go to all three. Plus Valle and James and Gillies and Ruf and I assume Hernandez and Castro…should be an interesting group to watch.

I would drive up to Trenton to a game.. Lets try to organize a way to meet up when the R-Phils come to town

DMAR, maybe I will see at Trenton as I bought a10 game pack with 3 R-Phils games. I believe that Reading has a chance to field a very good team with the strong starting pitching and a decent offense.

Sounds good to me. I live in Bucks county so Trenton is easy to get to. Do you know the dates yet Reading will be at Waterfront?

DMAR, the Reading Phillies will be in Trenton for seven games ans two series. The first series is Thursday July 19th through Sunday July 22nd. The second series is Tuesday August 7th through Thursday August 9th.

I recall Aumont saying he preferred relieving to starting.

I don’t think I quite understand how someone with world class closer potential has no potential as a starter (unless they have no endurance which I dont’ think is the case with aumont)… any help here?
But if he is indeed bitching about relieving, he’s not going to get a lot of sympathy from me on that one, he’s been tried in that role. That said, he could bust the ML roster as a long man and take it from there (ALA brett myers)
LikeLike
Yeah, I’ll help you. There are a lot of reasons why a guy with world class closer potential may not be a good starter. First, there’s velocity. Many guys can throw hard for an inning or two but cannot maintain it through an entire game. Goose Gossage tried his hand at starting and had all kinds of problems – velocity and otherwise – before heading back to a stellar career as a reliever and, more to the point, Aumont lost a LOT of velocity the year he went to starting. Reports were that he was having trouble hitting 90 on a regular basis. This past year, he was in the high 90s – like 98 or 99. So, in essence, you are talking about a completely different player. Second, there’s pitch variety. To be a good starter you have to show variation in “stuff” over 3 or 4 at bats. This typically means mastering at least 3 pitches and having good command. To be a good closer, you need one or two pitches at most and it is less about command than it is about executing just enough pitches to keep the hitter off balance. Of course, if you also have command, then you can become a great closer. Finally, some guys just aren’t built to sit around for 4 days and need the adrenalin rush – the sitting may have been one of Aumont’s other problems.

I don’t think I quite understand all the Tyler Greene love… 375k bonus in the 11th round, he comes in around 15 on the top 30 list to me as not even our best draft pick last year. Larry Greene is going to get consideration from me around 9… but could fall slightly later, my list is still developing.
So, along those lines, I would love for someone to explain to me why they think Tyler is so good, my view on him isn’t set in stone as it is for other prospects who’ve been in our system for years and years (galvis – did i spell it right? ::finger:: )

I realize it is an entirely unrelated topic, but I really think we should try to organize a “Phuture Phillies” day at someplace like Reading and anyone who wants to come can get a name badge where they identify themselves only by their website moniker. I realize this is probably contrary to every chat room and blog protocol ever created but, after all these years, it would really be fun to meet a few folks and shoot the breeze about prospects and baseball.
What do ya think?

Of the scouting reports I was able to find for T Greene many had him rated as a late 1st early 2nd but his signability played a big role in him slipping to round 11. 375,000 to a round 11 Player I would say is the equivalent to $800k to a early 2nd.
Additionally many say he has more polish than the other 3 and those that know the term “a dirtbag” For L Greene there are questions surrounding his ability to hit for any average and play defense. For Roman there’s question of hitting for average and whether or not he has the hands to stick in the IF.
And of Walding I really don’t get the $800K. He is as raw as they come out of HS but then Oregon liked him enough to offer him a baseball scholarship so who knows. He’s a big kid 6’3″ 190 bats L throws R.

Sounds like another Travis Mattair (no offense to Travis, it just didn’t work out).

What’s not to get about the 800k Walding received. That is what it took to get him to give up his college commitment. It only took 350k to get Tyler Greene to give his up. The Phillies did a good job on Greene and Shull. They should have commanded more, but since they didn’t, the Phillies were able to sweeten the pot for Walding.

I agree, everyone says Tyler Greene dropped to $375,000 because of signability but i guess that didn’t apply to Walding? He had a full ride to Oregon.I think the Phillies paid exactly what each player was worth. If you are considered a 1st or 2nd round guy, why would you sign for $375,000.Didn’t anybody advise him? My guess is they new they were getting fair money for his abilities. If it pans out that he is really, that good then gerat for the Phillies but bad for Tyler.I hope it plays out good for both.

Is anyone else concerned with the thought of us acquiring another veteran reliever in terms of blocking some of our younger guys? If we have Papelbon, Contreras, Wood (as an example), and Willis, to go along with probably Kendrick as a long man, that leaves 1 or 2 spots for Bastardo, Stutes, Aumont, Schwimer, DeFratus, Savery, and Herndon. So 5-6 of those 7 names would be in the minors, and even when you assume you have let’s say 2 injuries at any given time, that still leaves 3-4 of those names in the minors at all times. Don’t really see the need for another veteran right now unless they know Contreras isn’t healthy.
LikeLike
I’m not too concerned. To be honest, I like the idea of Schwimer as the 13th pitcher. Get a couple guys with options and it gives the Phils some flexibility after extra inning games and doubleheaders to rotate in some fresh arms. And I really don’t expect 70 innings out of Contreras this year.
LikeLike
The interest in Wood is supposedly related to whether or not Contreras will be available. It seems as though Wood will sign with the Cubs after all in any case. Anything could happen, but it sounds like the Cubs sweetened the offer. The Phillies won’t be ready to sign Wood for awhile yet, so he’ll probably take the Cubs offer while it is there.
It looks like the pen will be Papelbon-Contreras/Wood-Bastardo-Willis-Open-Open-Kendrick. Stutes, Aumont, Schwimer, and DeFratus will compete for those two spots as it stands. I’d guess that Stutes and Schwimer have the inside track, but since all four pitchers have options, performance will dictate who gets what.
Aumont’s bid is hurt by his prospect status. Since he has remaining upside, he’ll probably get a chance to close in AAA and improve his command/control rather than getting infrequent work as reliever #5.

I think they are looking do add some one for insurance if Contreras can’t come back. They would probably be more comforatble with the guys you mentioned filling 1-2 spots, not 2-3 spots.
LikeLike
To me, the least of these guys mentioned is Herndon. DeFratus is the likeliest guy to be called up if/when a fill-in is needed. His ability to command his pitches is superior to Aumont’s…for now.
Aumont needs to gain his own command which he can spend improving most of the season at LV. With that in hand, he could fulfill his obvious great promise. Without that, not so much.
Scwimm showed poorly in his short debut; getting lefties out is his main concern going into ’12. I like Savery at LV in reserve in case either Bastardo or Willis falters or needs relief from injury or a pitched-out arm, temporarily.
Right now it seems they have little confidence in Contreras being healthy. Solution—> Wood…if they can get him at a moderate price. Inducement: the Phils are most likely of all to reach ’12s playoffs.
