Coaching Announcements

Just a short note that the Phillies have announced that the entire Lehigh Valley coaching staff will return next year. This includes Manager Ryne Sandberg, Pitching Coach Rod Nichols and Hitting Coach, Sal Rende.

Former Lehigh Valley All Star first baseman Andy Tracy will begin his mangerial career this season taking over the reigns of the Short Season Williamsport Crosscutters.

  1. Thanks Gregg.

Personally, I’m really happy Sandberg is sticking around. I still have visions of him being the next Phillies manager, and my hope is that he lands a job with the big league club in 2013 and is then groomed to take over for Manuel.

      1. I would have to believe that Sandberg is a likely successor, but that is probably what they believed in Chicago as well. Any thoughts on whether he is better served acting as AAA manager or as ML Bench coach?

        1. Personally, I think he would be better served being the AAA manager for another season because it gives him more experience handling the off field issues he wouldn’t get in Philly as a bench coach.

  2. Glad to see Sandberg return to the organization. I envision him on the coaching staff in 2013 and leading the team in 2014.

Would love to see him manage the Phillies past the Cubs in the NLCS.

  3. Interesting that he auditioned for a couple of MLB Mgr jobs and was left behind.
To a lot of us he represents Cholly’s retirement in ’14 and if so is likely to become one their coaches in ’13.

There remain many unknowns about his management strategy and style and whether he is as “player-friendly” as Cholly, as well as being able to deal with the grande egos on the team.

Does the lack of enthusiasm about Sandberg from other teams make him at all suspect?

A question yet to be answered.

    1. He’s only interviewed for two jobs at the MLB level to my knowledge. The Cubs and Red Sox wanted experienced managers and the Cardinals and White Sox went with their own former players.

I wouldn’t put too much stock into him not getting a job. It mostly had to do with his lack of experience.

  4. Being turned down by the Cubs is a good thing since they never do anything right. We all know independent thinks are not prized in the MLB. Maybe that is Sandberg’s problem. I am not on the Ty bandwagon. He fits the “Wade” mold in other words “a bargain”. Hopefully I am wrong.

  5. Agree about Ryne on the Phils staff in 2013, then manage in 2014. However, it could be problematic to have him as a bench coach or base coach, right there in front of Charlie, everyone thinking, well, Charlie’s a lame duck, there’s his replacement right over there. Let’s go ask him a question instead of Charlie. That kind of thing. Just a thought.

    1. When the current manager is 68 years old (his birthday is in January), the “lame duck” status goes out the window somewhat. UC is probably looking to retire soon anyway. It would be more of a “grooming for command” type role…much like Mattingly under Torre in LA was.

  6. If Cholly is smart he will help with the transition and go out a hero but I believe so of that ole country boy stuff is paper thin. There is more ego there than meets the eye.

  7. There’s no doubt Ol Uncle Charlie has an ego. He just doesn’t show it or allow it to supercede his promotion of team values. I get the same vibe from Sandberg.

    1. But among Cholly shortcomings SEEMS to be the inability to take advice. Surely the pitching coach for one couldn’t possibly be ok with some of the irrational things he has done over the years.
