Phillies hire Joe Jordan to replace Chuck LaMar

Per the Inquirer. My first reaction to this is “okay”. And it will take a bit more time to digest. As I mentioned when LaMar left, we don’t really know what these guys are doing on a day to day basis. Jordan was in charge of the drafts in Baltimore, and did see a nice chunk of talent come through the system in the last 5 years or so. His job in Philly will be on the development side of things, as from all accounts, Marti Wolever will continue to run the draft and set the org philosophy when it comes to drafting players. Jordan is well respected and he liked upside guys in Baltimore, so that should fit in well with what the Phillies already do.

These positions are very important to a team’s success, but it’s hard for us to judge the quality of these people because we don’t really know exactly what they do every day, how much impact they have on players, and how much importance their bosses will place on their opinions. Jordan seems like a smart guy and so we’ll give him time and see what happens.

  1. Hopefully the inability to develop any pitching in Baltimore without getting everybody hurt wasn’t Jordan’s fault. If so, don’t let him near the arms!

  2. Yes, when it comes to sports organizations it’s hard to know who really does what. They probably don’t want us to know. This seems especially to be the case with Philadelphia’s opaque franchises (see: Eagles).

    1. This is interesting considering 5 of the guys listed on other teams are former Philly farmhands: Cosart, Singleton, Santana, d’Arnaud & Gose. Throw those on top of what are already listed in the organization and the Phils would move up that listing. It’s also interesting that if the Astros didn’t have three of our former prospects, they’d be way down the bottom. Where did all their home grown prospects go? Is that something to blame on Wade?

  6. Apparently Keith Law was upbeat about this move. Said he fits in perfectly with the Phillies’ organizational philosophy and listed Jaime Garcia and Josh Johnson among his finds.

    1. No doubt by next year Keith Law will be panning the guy’s contributions to the organization because he hates the Phillies… 🙂

      1. Haha yup. Plus Johnson and Garcia will then be counted against him by that point since both have had Tommy John Surgery in their young careers.
